I do about the same thing with my clamps, I hold a strip of wood against the plank ,then push the clamp down tight on the bulkhead and push up tight to the plank. I like your planking it looks great. Hey CiscoH, I live in Newport, any wooden model clubs in Delaware?

Air Compresser
Mike Collier replied to Guyuti's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
I use a single stage Pasche airbrush and a portable air compressor on wheels that I bought at Home Depot for $150 . Then I use a regulator with quick disconnect fittings on the regulator and airbrush. That way I can connect the compressor to the regulator and connect the airbrush. -
Model Shipways paint
Mike Collier replied to Mark m's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
I always use a acrylic thinner for Model Expo paints , but they need 3 coats to get good coverage. I don’t have a problem with their paints, but will try AK Interactive paints or Tamaya paint. I use laundry detergent to clean my brushes and airbrush. They come out nice and clean and soft. I put a little detergent in my hand and scrub my brush in it then water. -
Wow, great job. Your model looks fantastic! I hope that someday my modeling gets as close to your modeling.

I like the looks of their models. Do you need a scroll saw for all their models?

Yes, it is a very good kit. I started the same way. Got the first two models done without any problems. I started the lobster smack and right doing the instructions on first step I glued the parts for the keel and something didn’t seem right. I realize that there was a miss print in the directions, it gave you the wrong sheet number for the main part, but called it the right part in the directions. I should have read it more carefully. I email Model Expo and order the sheet numbers I needed. They said they would get the parts out. I’ve been waiting 3 weeks to hear that they have shipped the parts.

Here are some of my builds. I bought Model Shipways Shipwright kit and also BlueJackets Skiff. It’s a lot of fun. Working on the Muscongus Bay lobster smack, but following the instructions it said part from sheet 5 but it was the wrong part. I emailed Model Expo and they are going to send me the parts. Cuda1949 I spent a lot of my youth in Selbyville.

I just started this kit too and I started off the same by using the wrong side. Thought something wasn’t right when the printing on the wood was on the inside. I tried to unglue it with alcohol but it warped bad and then broke . I emailed Model Expo and they are going to send me replacement parts free. I need to look more carefully. I will keep working on the model by working on the sails and masts.

Just joined a month ago. I started building model ships this summer. I built 3 small ships so far and have been enjoying it very much. Anyone else from Delaware?

I’m just starting to build wooden ship models, I bought Model Shipways Become a Shipwrights of Old kit. I built theDory and I think it came out nice and the Norwegian Pram also came out nice. I was in my local hobby shop and I found a Midwest kit the Chesapeake Bay Crabbing Skiff which I’m building now. Once that is finished I’ll move on to the Muscongus Bay lobster smack. It is very enjoyable hobby. I will have to decide on my next afterwards.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
