Well this has been quite a read. I’ve built Sovereign of the Seas, Soleil Royale, Amerigo Vespucci and the Flying Dutchman over the last 8 years. I’m currently working on the Victory and have started to think I should learn more about terminology as well as using Scale Ropes. I have to admit your knowledge of all things shipworthy is mind blowing but I have went through this entire blog and really enjoyed all the effort you put into it and plan to use some of your tips and tricks. It sure I’m ready yet for the full deep dive but am always looking to get more accurate in my ship builds. I’m also inspired to finally visit the Victory next summer in England. koodos and thanks for the effort.

I had similar issues with a kit I bought The Flying Dutchman. They had resistors etc. I always thought as well that the lights should be flickering since back them they would have been using lanterns. I was able to buy mini leds from Evans Designs Led lights. They look great but I too struggled with mounting and soldering. Just too a bunch of trials and errors. 😂 IMG_6736.mov

Great to be retired and have winter weather to allow quality time for my build. Even my golf buddies are enjoying the picks.

Been about ten days since I last updated this log but I have done quite a bit of work. Sticking with traditional Ochre. Was not excited about but after i paint each piece with flat ochre I give it a spray with gloss clear to provide some shine and I like the results.

I agree. I have some concerns about the exact position of the parts since there are no measurements. I’ve noticed on the layout that the rails for the future rigging are pretty tight to other pieces. time will tell. Good thing about being retired is I have plenty of time during the winter to work on the ship.

Working on the sub builds for the main deck. The kit has a lot of deck sun builds which I am looking forward to.

Moving along with the hull and the decking. The paint on the hull was quite a challenge. Many coats were needed but I think I nailed it. Happy new year to all.

Just joined the group. I have built many ships and was not aware of this forum. I finished the Sovereign of the seas in 2019 and the Soleil Royale in 2021. My newest project is the Amerigo Vespucci. It has been quite different that the older model ships with all the sun builds but I am enjoying the challenge. The hull was indeed different since it is painted and I was a putty and sanding operative until I got it just right. More to come.

The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
