alcoholic stain on blocks

"Revell CSS Alabama 1:96 - set of 434pcs CNC walnut blocks and Clamp of Deadeyes" are what I am staining. Hell, the more I learn the less I know! I have changed my mind again. After researching three dyes are needed to mix with alcohol. Black for deadeyes. Walnut for standing rig. And tan for running rig. Black is black. Can I dilute the walnut to make tan? Doubt it. Before I purchase anything like to make sure this is right. Where is the best place in USA to purchase small quantities of dyes? -

It seems the stain used for blocks is acrylic paint thinned with alcohol. Is this right? -

End of the month and I am running out of money. Alcoholic walnut stain for all the blocks. Is solvent based the same as alcoholic base? Got a favorite brand? -
Revell CSS Alabama 1:96 - set of 434pcs CNC walnut blocks and Clamp of Deadeyes this replaced plastic blocks Thought about weathering the model. Trying enough new things that I'll save that for the USS Constitution.

Hismodel has several hundred dollars of my money for CSS Alabama parts. The unstained blocks from him look good enough to go. Just wondering if I took it a step forward to stain a few, hundred. My build is for learning new ideas. The hammocks are defiantly getting added.

I am so glad this came to the top of the forum! This is the model in production in my plastic shipyard. Just painting the parts now. Love the hammocks. You did a superb job. I bought the accessories from Hismodel. Was wondering if you stained all the blocks the same? Or, did you stain them differently? Have not read the whole post yet, I will. How hard was it to put the bulkhead in for the hammocks? great job

I have some homework to do -
Hundreds of blocks need an alcoholic stain, or, not. If a was to soak these blocks, would walnut stain be used? Do I need to stain at all?

You had me check. Yep, real McCoy. Made in USA

that gives me a start. I had the link for Quadhands work bench open when a nap overcame me. When I woke my friend had ordered it for me. She seen how small the blocks are and took pity on me!

I see helping hands, or such, being used to tie blocks. Are there some homemade jigs, or what do you recommend on a budget?

Garage workshop
Frank Burroughs replied to Frank Burroughs's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
A couple trips to the garage to bring in wood for jigs and selves for the wood workshop in my bedroom. If I can sleep with dog hair, sawdust ain't nothing. Looks like a trip to the dump and there will be room to more a large table to the center of the garage. This Summer to arrange a layout to start scratch building next year. A large drafting table and flat cabinet, used, would be an excellent find. So, on the wood storage it sounds like it can be left in an unheated garage. I will bring in the cut piece into the house and bring to temp before working with it. Unsure about storing finished models out there. -
The dory is going to be my first wooden kit come Monday. The purchase came with a sailing pram and a lobster boat. The dory will be fun to make! Looking forward to your progress.

On wood, I'm starting out on a dory, a pram and a lobster boat. This is all leading to the French Steam and Sail Paddlewheeler L'Orenoque Mamoli. On plastic, I do not think I'll ever give these kits up. The only limits are time, money and scratch build goals. There are so many models from when I was a kid to build! CSS Alabama ups my game from the whaler. Bigger in size, and parts are upgraded. It won't be a museum piece. This kit leans towards teaching new skills. A mini-lathe was bought to turn the masts and yards. Today I am moving the motor back 5 1/2 inches to give room for a ten inch mast. Have not used a lathe since1973. Still goes around, right?

Scalemates timeline has this as the first model of the CSS Alabama. USS Kearsarge's hull was used for CSS Alabama hull. The gun ports are off. Not going to correct that. This model is more for learning new processor than historical accuracy. The plastic is good. The hull was slightly warped. All in all, satisfied with the kit.
