    Hi Vic,

Welcome to MSW.  There's quite a few battleship/battlecruiser builds in the Kit area so you might have a look there.   I'd suggest starting a log and as for parts and pieces, take a look here and ask if don't see anything that helps: https://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/forum/15-discussion-for-a-ships-deck-furniture-guns-boats-and-other-fittings/

First, let me say, I appreciate the fact this magnificent forum exists. A lot has changed in the world of information since I began my modeling journey 50+ years ago. I've taken a 20-year hiatus from the hobby (as life priorities mandated), but I'm anxious to re-enter the hobby.

I'll post a proper build thread, but I though the obligatory introduction was the correct way to start.

I look forward to reading through the archives and seeking knowledge. As with other new members, I appreciate your patience.

    Regards,

    Hi,

My names Vic and I am scratch building a 1:250 scale USS Missouri. I have recently completed a similar scale model of HMS Hood which I would welcome sharing with anyone in terms of the build and finished model (including all the mistakes and frustrations). I am certain I will encounter a number of similar issues with the new model and hope that some of you can assist me with suggestions (nice ones please) and help with finding various components (life rafts spring to mind at this moment.

This looks to be a decor piece produced in SE Asia. It bears a very slight resemblance to the Swedish warship Vasa, and when I say 'slight', I mean very, very slight. Understand first that these models are mass produced with little regard to the actual form of the ship being modeled. So, for example, the rigging on the model does not conform to actual practice. A lot of ship modeling references will be of limited use in this instance, since scale modelers are generally trying to imitate actual practice. A more general guide to ship models, such as zu Monfeld's Historic Ship Models, might give you a rough idea on how to fix up the rigging. Cannons and other bits can be purchased from ship modeling supply outfits such as Model Expo or Bluejacket Shipcrafters. As to replacing the carved figures, they are obviously hand-carved, so the only way to replace them with something similar is to carve them yourself, and that's no simple task.

    Good luck to you!

Hi everyone. My name is Ken. I was what you would call a semi-active member here before the crash. Did more observing than posting, but did have a post that  is now gone. So I will introduce myself as new and start over. I'm a native NY'r living in Georgia for the last 20 years. To be honest I didn't even know about the upset until about a month ago because things in my life got changed around and I had different priorities and had to put my hobbies on the back burner for quite some time. Now I'm close to retirement (65) and starting to get back into things. I build in plastic and wood. I have completed the rattlesnake and the cutty sark previously, but surely have to be a bit rusty at it now. I have a good stash of kits and will soon decide what to build for my new start. Going through the forums I see that things really haven't changed much. It appears that it's still the great bunch it was before. I'm looking forward to getting back into the hobby and participating in the great forums here. Ken

Anja reacted to clifforddward in Greetings! and request for input on which ship for first POF
Wow!...I'm overwhelmed by so many greetings and sincere ideas for my first POF build...thank you to all for the suggestions.

Building the Syren Ship Model company's Cutter Cheerful would probably be an ideal fully rigged model for me to build as it appears to be a super high quality kit with a great set of instructions and wealth of detail.  But my passion is Plank-on-Frame construction and I really want to build a ship model using this technique.

The suggested Viking ship is very interesting, but I fear since I don't currently have a passion for that era of ship the project might languish in my hands.

I've continued my research by doing a deep dive into the build logs here on the site...One project that "jumped off the page" is Admiralty Model's Echo Cross Section.  Looking at their web site and the build logs here it seems well thought out and designed to be built to a very high standard.  It fits the era of wooden ship models that interest me most...something I figure is highly important to carry me through completion of the project.  Throughout my modeling I've always had better success completing projects that have the most interest to me.

Being a cross section rather than a full hull is likely to mean I won't be biting off more than I can chew with this first POF project...I've re-read the For Beginners-Cautionary Tale a few times over the past couple of days and think I should think long and hard about taking on too big a project...

Would appreciate feedback on the idea of starting with this Echo Cross Section as a first POF project....what does the group think?

Now I'm not saying I'm ready to commit to building a full hull Swan class ship model, but after I build the Echo Cross section I should know if I'm interested in tackling a full ship in POF.

I've written to Admiralty Models to check on availability of the cross section kit as well as the fitting out kit...or if anyone here on the forum has this kit and has gone cold on it, please reach out to me as I'd be interested in buying an unstarted kit.

    Best Regards,
    Cliff
