Hi Kevin I'm interested to see what you come up with. I like the idea of having the boats stowed off the poop. I notice that the model on your log which does that, doesn't have the barricade. I guess its a question of historical accuracy v aesthetics or whether one is building the 1805 version. -

For the last week or so I've been working on the poop ladders, fire buckets and hammock netting. The poop ladders were OK but strangely they look skewed in the pictures...The fire buckets were a pain - they don't really look very good but are largely overshadowed by the hammock netting. Now I intend to finish the netting on the poop, the rudder, the outer hull decoration, chain plates before starting on the gun port lids. I notice from the instructions that in 1805 the Victory had a "barricade" on the poop deck. It looks a bit ugly to me (although I'm sure it provided welcome protection at Trafalgar) and from reviewing other builds I see most have not put this in place. I'm probably not going to have a barricade but was curious as to whether anyone else did intend to add one to their model... Some pictures:- -
Hi Derek You've done a great job on those lids - I'm getting close to starting mine. Spent two solid days on those buckets - probably 16 hours - then I redid them as I found I couldn't do the handles with them stuck in place. I've ended up with a very average result - but I'm not going to attempt them again. I feel there is probably a method of doing them right but I don't know what it is.... I'll post some pictures over the w/e. Good luck with your buckets Cheers Yon

Thanks Muggebigge I'll be following your log - very nice planking well done ! -
Hi David Well that's a lot of lids to look forward to ! Looks like you've done a great job - I imagine getting the angle consistent and the rope tight is a bit of a challenge. I'm doing fire buckets and anything else I can think of to put this off for a bit. Keep up the good work ! Yon

No modelspan is tissue but stronger than the stuff you blow your nose on. I think paper would be too thick if you wanted to get the folded effect in such a small area. The colour is painted on - just the CC red & yellow ocre, blue and black paints. -

Thanks Kevin I ended up using "modelspan" tissue which I discovered on the pdf about sails which is linked to your log. Originally I thought to use it to cover the lockers but its too thin. I cut out a rectangle and then folded it several times using a pin to make the crease and then dipped it in a little PVA to hold it in shape. Cheers Yon -

A very quick update as I don't think I'll get much build time over the next few days. I've finished the flag lockers with one showing the flags and the other with the canvass cover on. I'm reasonably happy with how they turned out although it was a bit time consuming. I then finished off the poop and made a start on the poop ladder assemblies. Pictures:- -

Thanks very much guys. David - I was intending to cover the lockers with material. I bought some tissue-like stuff which was referred to in Kevin's log about making sails (can't remember what its called). Then I was going to cover one completely and have the other one turned up a little showing the flags underneath so I should only need the internal part for one locker. That's the plan anyway - if it doesn't look very good I'll phone Jotika. Good luck with your lids - I'm certainly not looking forward to those ! Cheers Yon -

Over the last few days I've finished the quarter galleries including a shelf along the stern. I did not put the lowest of the copper profile around the quarter gallery - it just looked too big so I used a strip of wire instead. I don't really understand how the kit designers expected the stern profiles to be done according to their instructions. For me it was a case of improvising and experimenting. So that's the stern finished for the time being. Next I made up the bulwarks and capping rails for the poop deck. I now have the flag lockers to do although I am missing the sheet to make up the internal part for one of them (I think Derek had the same problem). Fortunately I was going to cover one of the lockers in canvass anyway so no delays while I wait for the part. Some pics... -
Great work David. The chain really does finish off the look of the stern nicely - well done !

A quick update.... I've managed to complete the port side quarter gallery except for the brass profile which hopefully will cover up more of the mistakes. Its not going to win any prizes but I'm reasonably happy with it considering what it looked like this morning. -

You're right, thinking about it - I wouldn't have to take the whole stern off. I think I'm going to finish off the port side and see whether I can make a decent job of it with paint, sandpaper and filler. If it doesn't work I'll try Jotika and strip down the patterns. If they won't replace them I think I could make some up without too much difficulty I should be able to post some pictures later today and go from there. Cheers Yon -

Hi David Thanks for that but I think its going to be OK once I clean up the painting and put on the decorations. I've cleared my diary for the next 5 days to tackle these ! I like the marquetry idea generally though so I've placed an order with amazon to add to my box of materials. Cheers Yon -

Good suggestion but the problem is really with the profiles and to replace them properly I would have to take the whole stern off. I'm having to mess around with the skins to get them to fit the profiles. If I succeed, I don't think you will be able to tell that the profiles were wrong. Its hard but I think I can see light at the end of the tunnel. Cheers Yon
