Fantastic work there Jason. Your detail on the rigging reminds me of Gil's Victory build.

Looking to improve the detail on my regging with the next build. Can I ask which Lever book you are referencing?

    Great looking detail Jason.

I may be setting the pace but you are most certainly setting the bar for quality. Keep it up!

Ratlines continuing on the Fore Top Mast. Also fitted the staves and catharpins. Starting to get really fiddly down at these small cramped areas. More ratlines tomorrow.....

After a busy week at work, inevitably having to catch from a week away, I have managed to get back to the build this weekend.

Finished carving out the three top masts. Nothing more technical than a 15cm steel ruler, a heavy duty scalpel, some sandpaper and a lot of patience!

Fitted the top masts in place and have started work on the shrouds. Fore Top Mast shrouds have been fitted and almost finished fixing the lanyards in place. Just when I thought I has finished doing ratlines, I sense some more in my immediate future.......

Haven't had much time to spare recently.  Masts approaching completion, small strips of paper were used to simulate metal bands above the tops and also added some scratch jeer block strop cleats for bit more interest out of scrap.  Painted up it seems to be coming together and I'm pretty happy.  Rails and the eyebolts will be left off until later, but all holes have been drilled.  Few more deck details to put finishing touches to and glue, and then onto the shrouds and ratlines.

    Hi all,

Safely back from sunny(!) Scotland. It's a long old drive from the Highlands back to Bristol, but helps when split into two days with a stop off in Manchester.

Anyway, here are the models we saw in the Eagle Barge Pub on the Caledonian Canal. Great little pub full of different pieces of furniture and decorations with their own stories.

Sjors, Alistair and the 'likers' appreciate your continued interest and support.

Small progress update, finished rigging the bobstays and the bowsprit shrouds.  Boomkins made up but not glued yet as there was the potential to interfere with the bowsprit shroud.  These will be left off until later as they just seem too much of an accident waiting to happen.  Instructions indicate these should be made with 4mm dowel but even with tapering it looked far to thick so made up a set using 2mm dowel tapered slightly at the end which seems more consistent with pictures I've seen.

    Hi all,

This will be my last post for a little while as I am off to Scotland for a weeks holiday with my significant other. I have however just about managed to finished the first set of ratlines. I still need to touch up some of the lines that aren't nice and taut but the vast majority of the work is complete. It feels like it's been a bit of a slog but it looks great with the ratlines added.

When I return it will be onto the top masts and stays.....

Well, here she is.  I will post better pictures tomorrow.  I left the shrouds like they were.  It would have been very difficult for me to try to get them off, and it probably would have made things worse.  It is another lesson learned.  I did learn how to do the decals that you stick in water first.  Plus, I am getting better at doing a lot things.

Thanks Hamilton, nothing really revolutionary, just some practice and proving to myself it can be done.  Its nice working with wood again after all the carronade rigging.

Another small detour on the tops.  Kit supplied versions are simple ply and given that these are likely to get quite a bit of attention decided to dress these up a bit using a technique I saw on BEs excellent Pegasus build.  4x0.5mm walnut strips were glued to the ply to simulate planking, to ensure overall dimensions remained the same the edge piece was traced around with a sharp knife to remove any excess and get the correct shape.

Pretty happy with the way it turned out with edge in place and the battens installed.  Tried to shape these so that they get thinner toward the center and will probably tidy these up a bit more before installation.

Took a bit of a detour to work on the jib boom.  The reason was to get a bit of practice, there are a couple of areas on the plans that don't quite look right and I suspect are simplified in the kit instructions, typically where you'd expect to see an octagonal section with dimension slightly larger than the required dowel.  I hope to try to build up these by squaring off the dowel and gluing strips to build up to a square section, and then shape back down to an octagonal cross section.  Given this seemed to work pretty well it seems this should work fine on the upper masts as well where it'll be more obvious.

Jib boom won't be fixed yet and there are a couple of holes still to drill to simulate various sheaves.  I'm actually really enjoying this part of the build despite my initial worries, though slow and steady is definitely the order of the day.  Also it seems that the small details really make a difference so I want to do this justice.  Apologies the photo aren't the best.

Completed the main mast shrouds and have now added first two pairs to the mizzen mast. Just need to add the two single shrouds.

In addition I have made my first attempts at ratlines. I created a template for the port side of the foremast, using a piece of paper to draw in the positions of the shrouds and ratlines spaced at even intervals of 5mm.

My first attempts were less than satisfactory with too much slack between the shrouds. Eventually managed to get a line that I was happy with. I'm trying to tie in using cow hitches at the ends and clove hitches in between.

    Cheers Jason.

I've bought a couple of lengths of walnut dowel from CMB, so I will see how they turn out.

I think you're right, they should angle forward at 45%.  I've read that the beech dowel is tricky to stain consistently - but that there are some products that apparently help with this - think there are some topics in the mast or paint forums.  I had considered ordering some mahogany dowel and leave natural - there seems to be a lot of colour variation though so my need to buy more than needed if you're not able to find any at a local shop (which I haven't been able to).

Mainmast ratlines completed. I have however discovered a bit of a boo-boo I've made. The catharpins I've installed on the Foremast and Mainmast are a bit too low and should be two 'rungs' higher in each case. Not disastrous but slightly annoyed I made the error. Never mind.

Onto the mizzen mast, which has no ratlines added as of yet. So I suspect it will be a week or so before completion.
