    Hi Mates,

Well after a bit of introspection, I realized that I needed to push myself. What was the point of buying an expensive tool and not learning how to use it to its full advantage, so Proxxon milling machine got another visit.

After three attempts, I got one block with four sheaves (one a bit bigger) that looked ok.

Next came the issue with the pulleys, and by some coincidence some left over cannon doors slipped perfectly into the grooves. So pulleys were made as follows.

    Pics are fairly self-explanatory:

Drilled a center hole through each door

Cut the corners, and attached the four to a Dremel using one of those circular micro saw shafts

With a block, sanded the doors down to appropriate sized spheres.

Using a round head micro file initiated four small grooves

Then using an end bit deepened the previous grooves to appropriate looking depth

The “pulleys” slipped right into the block with the now correct four sheaves.

Looking at the close-ups, I now see that I need to re-paint the knightheads - ugly close up J

Also I need to re-adjust the upper gun deck ladder hooks – they stick out too far - out of scale.

Thanks for all of you kind comment. AND certainly your advice and encouragement.

    Michael

    Thanks Mark,
I will start study these topics. I hoped that the book Vasa II would be ready earlier, but I understood that Fred Hocker is busy with other things

I am also searching now a good translation in the English terms vs the Dutch terms and I will also verify this information in copies of old Dutch books

    Hi Mark,

Just a quick question, do you have a link with the discussions with Fred and Clayton concerning the rigging, as I am now preparing for the rigging of my Corel Vasa.
    Thanks

Update - Masts stepped & mast tackles installed, using leftover hooks from a previous build. I will probably start on the shrouds next.

    Thanks for visiting!

I started working on the upper sections of the mainmast.

First, I finished the shrouds for the mainmast top sail.

Secondly, I prepped the mainmast top sail with blocks and rigging lines

Next I mounted the top sail onto the mainmast.
All the rigging lines are not tensioned (Except for the halliard) and the sail is not yet leveled and fitted.
At this point, I am making sure I know where everything is supposed to go!

The mainmast top stay fitted thru the foremast block

The Halliard lines fitted to the knight head.

My next step will be to repeat the above process for the mainmast topgallant sail.
After I am done with that, I think I will start to finish setting all the lines for the mainmast and mizzenmast before I move on to the foremast sails and shrouds.

    Thanks,

    Frank

    Hi mates,

Well it appears as though this bit is actually completed. Thanks for all of the nice words, Like clicks, or just dropping in.

A special thanks to Peter and Nigel for their so helpful suggestions, made such a difference.

The last pic was taken before any “fixes” what was I thinking? ha ha. Learned so much about this ship since “that” installation. As I look at it now I start to laugh. At the risk of being redundant, if it had not been for MSW, I would still be in a state of confusion (;-)

OK, now onto the next three sheaves. I pulled out the old ones so there are holes in the deck.

PS: I won't bore you with pics of the setup. I'll post when it's done.

PS2 2: not crazy about those Corel knighthead figures. Decided not to repaint them but leave them "used" looking hmmmm

    Regards,

    Hi Mates,

Thanks for your kind comments, likes, and suggestions. Always so appreciated.

Minor, well no, major relief that the “simple” plank exchange worked out as well as it did.

I used a small hammer; along with two knife tools to pre groove the planks so that the adjoining ones would be out of harm’s way as I tried to remove the bits. I thought of using an Exacto knife to run along the plank, but felt that there would be a risk of also grooving into adjoining planks, as well as not cutting deep enough.

You may note that one of those plank bits gave me a hard time. Must have been where all the glue had secured it to the under deck. That bit was nerve wracking.

Now onto re-framing the larger (and more correct) deck opening, then making the knightheads. So NO cigar but much closer looking to the 1/1 from what it was.

Again thanks so much for dropping by, and Peter cheers!!

    Regards,

    Michael

    Hi Mates,

Minor update -  again doing some “fixing” of previous errors J

PICS 1,2,3 are my initial knightheads, railing around entry down into upper gun deck, and incorrect weather deck gratings. Back then I was, well confused ha ha..

PIC 4 is how it should be - hmmm

PIC 5 are the Corel drawings, which added to the errors.

To compound all of this, when I pulled out the old knightheads I then decided to actually cutout the deck in order insert the new pieces down into the upper gun deck.  Also to hide the old glue and nail holes, I cut through those same places. This left the new pieces in still the wrong locations. Oh well.

Also you will note that the two tandem knightheads (the one the left) is larger. I think that I was using a too small replacement piece, so increased the hole sizes.

Now I need some advice, if you could offer some?

I would like to remove that second bit of framing trim from the upper gun deck entry, and then move that large knighthead closer in to where it should be). BUT that will leave an obvious big scar if I re-plank that first hole. There is already a scar from that removed railing grrr.

Could I put something over the hole to cover? Would a “tarp” be appropriate there? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Does anyone have any ideas?

I will use the Proxxon to cut the pulley grooves.

Again thanks so much for dropping by…

    Cheers

    Michael

Update - still working on the masts. All the platforms & cross trees are built. Now all I have to do is put all the masts together. The mast caps provided in the kit were English style square caps so I made my own rounded caps out of basswood & then stained everything to sort of match a little better. The iron straps holding the mast sections to the caps were made from copper strips & painted black. The pulleys on the sides of the masts are just short pieces of dowel - I did not bother to groove them as they will not be seen after the ropes going through them are in place. Foremast assembled - only 2 more masts & the bowsprit to go.

    Mark,
Should I just commit suicide now? !!
I am all confused, working off of 3 different plans and pictures from Clayton, the museum, and other logs! I am working slowly trying to figure out where all the rigging ends up on the deck and railings.

I sure wish that the Vasa rigging book from the museum would have been published before I started the rigging!

    Thanks,
    Frank

    Hello,

I made some more progress on my rigging.

I installed the lower main mast shrouds

    Attaching the ratlines

    Adding the main stay

Figuring out where all the running lines end up on the deck

Now I am ready to move on to the upper main shrouds and sails.

    Thanks,

    Frank

The kit comes with four kinds of cannon.  Two are false cannon designed for use with the kit's badly flawed gunport design.  The third kind is a large full size cannon for the weather deck; the fourth is a smaller full size cannon for the 2 quarterdeck falconets.

The original ship had a number of different kinds of weather deck cannon - falconets, culverins, howitzers of different sorts.  There's no way to procure these different guns in the right shape, and I don't have the skills to 3d model and print them, or carve masters and make molds from them for casting.  What I'd really like is if the Vasamuseet provided 3d scans of the guns so hobbyists like us could 3d print them, but that's another story.

In any case, I used a single size of Amati full size cannon for the gun deck guns - I'll slide them through the ports and drop them onto the false cannon I made.

For the weather deck guns, I used the two small kit cannon and 8 of the remaining 14 larger kit cannon, since they didn't look too bad as culverins.  For the remaining six large-bore guns I found some Amati cannon with nice decoration on them.  I figured three different kinds was enough and left it there.

The kit cannon are brass, and the Amati cannon are finished in copper.  I sprayed all of them flat black and then mixed up some bronze paint to finish them with.  Results below:

Hi everyone,a little update. I thought I would tackle the mast tops next.First I built some new platforms out of some 2 by 6mm strips. Then I cot out the lowest wide rail out of a sheet of basswood. Then the hard part - I made the brackets using an x-acto knife & some files,80 of them to be exact  . The upper rails were then made from the same brass bar that I used for the hand rail. After some fine tuning I got one assembled. The top on the left side of the second picture is the kit version. I`m pretty happy how mine turned out. Now I just need to make five more for the other masts.
