  1. Final update...I finally finished my build early this morning. The sail and rigging work was the most fun of all I think. Thanks to all of those who followed and commented on this build. It was a great project and I learned a lot about sails and rigging and now feel confident enough to finish my Constructo brand Albatros build. Be sure to check out my YouTube picture show of this final update. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lU_aV7NoC90
  2. I finally got the sails finished for my build tonight. First I taped the edges of the slightly over-sized sails and brushed on some clear lacquer to keep the threads in the sails from fraying then once dry, cut the sails to their correct size. I also added the reef lines to the main sail...A task made simple by using a needle threader. Next the real fun, attach the sails to the mast, boom and gaff and finally mount the finished mast assembly to the finished hull assembly. I'm really enjoying this build.
  3. Another quick update, the hull is now fully completed and the mast, boom and gaff are finished. Next step, make and install the sails and rigging. This has been a really fun build so far and although I didn't deviate from the kit instructions/plans like a lot have done with their builds to make awesome and unique lobster smacks, I'm still very happy with how my build has turned out. I have also created a part 3 picture show video on YouTube of what I have done up to now for anyone who'd like to see.
  4. Another quick update. For the most part the hull is now completed, what's left for the hull are some detail items. After that comes the most fun part in my opinion, the mast, bowsprit, boom and gaff then sails and rigging. Be sure to check out the part 2 build log picture show on YouTube of what's completed up to this point.
  5. I'd be scared to death to use a power belt sander working on a wood ship, I'm scared enough using my small vibration type electric palm sander on stubborn areas but like Spyglass said, even if you just manual sand a bunch of scrap planking and sweep all the dust in a little pile, you should have plenty to use for making some gap filler.
  6. Another quick update from this morning. I fabricated and installed the seat braces, added cabin/coamings, and cabin roof. Outer coaming and cabin roof painted semi gloss white. Next I plan to coat the bare wood surfaces such as decking etc. with clear satin Varathane brand Polyurethane and the hull will nearly be completed. Just a few more steps of parts to add to the hull and I'll be ready to start with the mast and spar work.
  7. Just a quick update, I painted the hull semi gloss white and have the water line area masked off and ready for semi gloss black paint. I figured painting the whole hull white first would hopefully help hide any imperfections of my sanding skills or lack there of ;-) Completed and painted main hull. I will post more as more is accomplished.
  8. Thanks Russ...I snuck away for a bit and got the bow blocks carved but am done for the night for sure....shhhh ;-) Edited to add pictures....OK so I couldn't resist at least finishing the bow blocks and final sanding...See you all after Christmas.
  9. Just a quick update on what I'd gotten done tonight. I just need to shape and sand the bow blocks, add the cut water and the hull will be ready for paint. I'm still deciding on what colors yet though. More to come as I progress. No more for tonight though, gotta spend some time with the Admiral and may not be working on projects Christmas day tomorrow either. Enjoy your Christmas everyone.
  10. Thanks Pete, I love this hobby...I'm in process of planking the side sheets right now and after finish sanding, I will post pictures.
  11. This will be the last update for now I think. Everything is completed on the hull and sail making and all mast and rigging work is left. I'm saving the remainder for a later date and going back to work on the Lobster Smack build for awhile. Thanks to those who have followed my builds thus far. Be sure to check out my latest build log picture show on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUXORrfEZoY
  12. Back to work on my Lobster Smack today. Just finished the dreaded fairing of the hull in preparation for the side sheet planks. More to come as I progress.
  13. To quoteth Popeye: ""There are so many ships that deserve to be modeled, I'm like a kid in a candy store. That's probably why I watch so many builds.....So many talented modelers here"" That's exactly how I feel...and so little time to do everything you would like to too.
  14. Oh believe me I can multitask ;-) I have probably 5 or 6 different projects going on at once. Ranging from balsa planes, model rocketry to boats...Just haven't gotten back around to the Lobster Smack yet. Loving it all though.
  15. I'll probably work on mine a bit this week sometime. That's the "problem" with so many projects at once, choosing which to work on next. ;-)
  16. Thanks Harvey, it's sure been a lot of fun to build so far. I had considered substituting planking strips for the sheeting used in the kit since I need more practice for my tall ship builds. The sheets do in fact butt up against the bow blocks in this kit rather than cover them up but it could easily have been sheeted i that area too and would have made it easier. All in all though I have been fairly happy with the kit materials and how the boat has come together so far.
  17. Thanks Casey...I love Midwest's kits too, great plans sheets and excellently illustrated instruction manuals. Last update for tonight...
