    Hi Guys,

About time for an update, it's been a while.

Now what was I doing ? Ahh yes that's it, FRAMES,  well frame production is still going on all be it slowly what with the holidays and all but I'm pleased to say I only have 1 single ( 11 ) and 1 double ( 12 ) to do, they are all cut out and ready for final adjustments and making up.

Talking with Grant there has been a change in the method of holding these frames while being constructed, where I used pins to hold the pieces in place I am using Grants method using double sided tape.

This method allows for more frames to be made at once because no pin board is required, I only have a single pin board. I don't have a picture of the new method but should anybody want to see it Grant has posted some in his log.

I also had a problem when the frames were placed direct onto the template in as much as I was getting ink in the joints when gluing the frames together, I got around this by using a piece of celotape over the template joint. This has cured that problem so all I need to concentrate on is getting a good fit with the wedges, (still trying to get them right ).

Grant and I were also discussing which finish to use because each stage will need to be finished before moving on. Minwax Satin seems to the favoured choice but unfortunately it's not sold in the UK, at least to my knowledge, so I thought I would use Tung oil, I applied some to a practice frame made from Swiss Pear and although it looked OK it is quite dark, I looked to see what is the UK equivalent to Minwax and it turned out to be Clear Polyurethane, I already had some of this and tried it out although it was gloss and I wanted satin, it's a lot lighter and does look better so another trip to the hardware store and that's now sitting waiting to be used.

I only have a few pics mainly because frames are frames and have been shown before.

My old system of frame holding

The next 3 pics are where I am at the moment

On the right is the Tung oil, left is Polyurethane

So that's it guys, a bit disappointing really, I will post again when all the frames are complete although there will still be a fair bit of work to do on them before moving onto the next stage.

ok after another night of measuring and comparing with the plans i seem to have two options

the flase keel is 2mm longer then the full sized plans. the dimensions in the part list seems to correspond with the plans

so option 1 i make the false keel the same length as the plans which means a fair bit of sanding and maybe even repositioning some bulkheads

option 2 i leave it like it is and make sure to measure every part and not go on the dimensions in the part list. this option is ofcourse the easy way

my order of flickering LEDs arrived yesterday. immediatly i realised i ordered the wrong ones. I am pretty sure they will work , but i might have to remove the one that i have installed as they may not be compatible. i have enough to do the lower deck (with 2 spares).

from next week i ll be on hollidays for 2 weeks, staying home mostly and there should be plenty off time finishing off the whole lower deck

I didn't do much with this little project but managed to remove the rower's benches and put new ones in one frame forward.  I think it balances out much better this way.
Looking at the photo I think that I'll have make the benches a little narrower.

I also made the rudder ad helm stick.  Now it's just a matter of making the gudgeons and pintels, the oar locks and mooring / lifting ring - and painting.

I begin to think that I'm stretching this build out some, like I don't want it to end.  But I really need to finish it up so I can start make the display board and dust cover.

Okay, here is a picture and with a #11 blade to indicate scale (for George   )

busy week at work , so I am still working on weeks 13 and 14

about 2 weeks ago I ordered some test led lights. 3 chip leds in 3 sizes and a flickering led to simulate a candle flame

this to test out which would fit best in the little lanterns

they have arrived and I thought the flickering one would be too big but I got it fitted in.

once I get the issues where it shows how they ll fit in the ship to make sure I can make the wiring invisible, I ll order the rest.

WEEK 13 and 14 (no I haven't forgotten 12 but the brass parts where damaged, so I have to wait on replacements)

both issues have the same contents :brass parts for the side prison walls, lanterns and doors

as expected the brass parts don't fit snugly in the wood parts so I decided to use some small wood strips to make them fit better

First picture shows one finished part on the left, the wooden and brass part in the middle and the cut outs of the wooden part

one of the cut outs I reduce in thickness to about .8 mm which I fix inside the wooden part using masking tape. then I put the brass part on top  (see picture 2)

measuring each inside then cut some wooden strips 2 mm wide. apply some white glue and push against the inside using
the other cut out which I sanded the sides down so they are .6 mm less on each side (picture 3)

once the glue is dry sand them gently down to the level of the part

afterwards remove the masking tape and cut out and turn the part over. apply some superglue on the sides of the brass part and then put 4 more wooden strips on the inside

sand afterwards and then all is left is to paint the wooden parts fat black

wooden and brass parts for the prison cell walls
the brass parts are spray painted with metallic charcoal
for the mdf parts after some experimenting with stains and so, I settled for plain flat black paint

about 2 months I subscribed to the Build the black Pearl from Hachette as it was just released in Australia.

it was my attempt to get back into building after a long time of no activity, as I figured there wouldn't be much work to do each week. each delivery contains 4 issues , but I will stick to doing one a week. for about a month I was working on another project (a bf gift for my wife) but now I am catching up again.

I ll be doing a post with some pictures every week )

    WEEK 8, 9 and 10

each week brings 2 parts for the lower deck

no strips of wood for the planking but 2 pieces of cardboard.

main reason I didn't use them was that it is in 2 parts with a seam visible through the open hull

so I used left over 7 mm strips (way to big but they ll do) from the GF and used oak stain to darken them

the bulkheads are treated with a black japan stain

Well, I decided to make the additional "false" frames in the cockpit / work area and at the fish bin.  I figured it enhances the look somewhat and will give the deck some more points to glue to.

I also installed the framing for the fish bin hatches.

Everything is still in the rough and awaits dressing-up.

Here are the pics of today's activities.

not much happening , due to the fact that i have been working on the GF and my workbench is so cluttered again i dont have room

i have planned a cleaning and reorganising off the garage shelving where i use one shelf to make two little work benches (900mm W x 400mm D).

these can be used to work and store painted and glued parts of both ships and still leave me room to work on other projects (of which i have too many )

Hello Russ and thank you for your kind words, appreciate it.

I'm not in the least thrilled with the balsa side planking and have caused some damage to the top sides in handling.  But I guess that's the price i am paying for batching it to this extend.  If the boat is build according to the build guidance this won't happen though because the deck'll be on first.

Okay, I managed to complete the planking of the cockpit / work area and the fish bin deck.  I also made and installed planking to the fish bin aft bulkhead.

Next job?  that'll be a toss-up right now.  I think I need to make a few false ribs for the cockpit / work area to strengthen the side planking.  I did glue a strip of heavy paper to the outside at the sheer.  I was even contemplating of a sheer nylon cloth over the hull with poly urethane like I did on the O19 sub hull.

Well, in any case I'll play it by ear right now and keep plugging along.  At least I'm in the building-up stage and not tearing things down

Thank you all for visiting and your like votes, it's much appreciated and encouraging.

In between working a few chores around the house and the lobster smack kit I managed to do some more work on the dinghy.

I made and installed the bow "platform," the helm's man seat and two oarsmen seats.
Due to the gunnel on top of the ribs I had to make the bow thingy in two peaces.  I tried to make it in one piece but that turned out to be impossible and after two tries I gave up and just split them.  I supported it in the center though with a narrow strip and super glued it in.

I had better luck with the helm's man seat though.  It is wide enough to be able to bend it enough and it popped right in.  I had to remove and install it several times for the fit but it finally worked out kinda okay.

I had to add just a little wood filler in spots but after it's painted dark grey all those blemishes will be hidden.

The oarsmen seats were rather easy, also because I could bend them to pop them in.  But - - - when I closed shop this afternoon and taking a last peek I realized that the oarsmen seats are too far aft.  Too much weight in the aft end of the dinghy.  No problem, we'll just tear them out and make two new ones and move them up one rib, they'll look even better

I also made the rudder and the helm stick and that was all she rode today.  Next up, after the oarsmen seats are replaced, is to make the oar locks, rudder gudgeons and pintles.  Then a fitting to the upper bow beam for a mooring / lifting ring.

Coming close to completion.  But I still need to make the cradle on the sub.

    Cheers,

Hello all and thanks for your patience.

I have been slowly planking dinghy version 2.0 and it's now all planked but still in a semi rough state.  There is a lot of clean-up work yet to be done and perhaps reducing the thickness of the frames somewhat.

I think that version 2.0 came out a lot better then v.1.0!  Both sides are now equal in height and the planking looks balanced.  I think the effort was worth while, at least I am satisfied now.

After I'm done tweaking it up to where I'm happy with the looks of it then I'll add the helm's man seat, the oars-men seats, oarlocks, rudder and other things.  I wont be too finicky with the way the wood looks because I'll be painting it in dark grey.

Well, I don't know about Nils but as far as I can tell my version 1.0 may be the first miniature klinker build boat here

As it turned out the planking was actually 0.5 mm thick and 3 mm wide.  I tapered one side to 0.5 mm or less so I could lay the following plank on top of the tapered side of the previous plank.  I also used CA gel cement to glue the planks on.  I found this to work quite well for me.  I cemented the plank first to 3 or 4 center ribs while holding the plank firmly in place with my fingers.  For some reason I never got stuck to the boat    Then after this was holding good I used a fine pointed toothpick to dab some CA gel to the next ribs so I could guide the plank in the proper position, also holding it tight to the rib.  This way I didn't need the clothe pin clamps.

I added a wale and shear cap.  After I have removed some more wood from the ribs I'll put the keelson in and a few planks next to it.  Hey, the sailors need to have a ceiling / floor / deck for steady footing

Okay, here are a few pixs of the results so far.

The length is 70 mm or 2.75 inches.  This is big enough or in this case small enough to fit into it's hold.  I still need to make and install the cradle for it inside the hold area below deck.

    Cheers.

I made some progress between my other activities.

I continued planking the cockpit / work area deck / floor, which is almost completed.

I also made two deck beams for the fish bin with the carlings for the bin access holes and hatches.  I'll be continuing with the planking and hopefully adding a few fake frames in the cockpit / work area.

I made the access holes 20 X 20 mm square, the opening will be reduced by 1.5 mm on all sides due to the uprights for the hatch covers that are to fit over them.  This'll give me a working opening of 17 mm across.

Here is a picture as she looks as of this afternoon.  I need to spend some time with the O19 dinghy tomorrow but between glueing jobs I should be able to work both at the same time.
