Pete38 reacted to Chuck in Help decide next project for Syren Ship Model Company
On a separate note. My store will be opening hopefully again. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. Grandma is coming home from the hospital today. I am shooting for tomorrow to re-open the store but depending on how things go once she comes home....at the latest it will be early Thursday morning. Thank you all for your patience. I learned from the last time that this was the best way to handle the situation and closing down for a few days was what enabled me to keep my sanity throughout it all.
I will get organized and see what I have to start making tomorrow as I know my inventory must be a wreck. Havent stepped into the shop much since last week. So if you see a lot of stuff out of stock....I am going to get right on it. But it will take some time to catch up once I get the sweatshop up and running again.
Thanks again
Chuck

My frames are also a little too short. It is not really a problem for the most of them because their top ends will be hidden by the inner and outer planking, but the fourth futtock of frame sticks out of the sheer rail and must be lengthened at both sides. To have a larger glue surface, I saw them off under an angle of approximate 45° and glue a comfortable long piece on top of it. I do the same with the fourth futtock of frame C because this one remains also visible.

The notches for those lintels have to be filled.

Of course the gun port lintels are also too low, therefore I saw them out.

I made the center supports for the lower deck the plans showed square post , but I like the looks of the way G.L. did his , so I knocked off the corners starting from 1/4 “ in from both ends.
and i I drilled the ends to slide in my pegs .
Then I drilled holes in the bottom side of the lower deck and keelson and assembled and glued down the lower deck . That felt like a milestone lol .
While I wait for the glue to dry I started cutting out pieces for the Main Sheet bits. First I cut blood wood to the desired size and sanded it to the final demensions shown on plan. I then used a coping saw and files to cut my notches
Using a drill press I drilled the spots for the sheaves as Tony K and G.L . did in there logs.
Now that the glue has dried and I have removed the clamps here is a few pictures of how she is looking.
Thanks for looking in on my build.

Thanks G.L. I appreciate that .
I have finished the lower deck . And added a coat of clear poly to the underside and half the top side , leaving the side that I’m planking bare. I have not glued it in place yet . I want to set the center support beams in first then I will glue it in .here is a few pictures pics of how she is looking.
The First two are without the poly.
The next two are with the poly I tried to get a shot of the under side while it sat in place ....I’m no photographer
Next will be the supports ,
Thanks for checking on my progress.

I am slowly making progress on the lower deck cutting and notching each piece as I go I should be adding planks soon .o will be using a nice white aspen for the planking.
Thanks for looking in

I cut , sanded , and prepared the rest of the planking dry fitting each plank as I went to ensure a proper fit. Then I got out the clamps and started gluing them down.
once i had all the planks down I trimmed ,and sanded both sides of the cross section to give it a nice edge .and again I used the soldiering iron to enhance the planking.
Once I got the look I wanted I decided it was time for a coat of wipe on poly clear ,satin finish .
well thats How she’s looking so
far. The next step I will work on is the Wales and deck beams.
Thanks for checking in !!

I started cutting the planks for the thickest inner planks. I used a box knife to cut the pre milled sheets to the approximate size
then clamped them in my vice .
Then sanded them to the correct dimensions
I then proceeded to glue and clamp them down.
Here is what she’s looking like at this stage .
Thanks for looking

I worked on limber strake and limber boards today I got one side fit. I used a #11 blade to cut the seat for the limber board into the limber strake
i used files to get final shape.
The limber boards were shaped by hand using sanding blocks and files .
I then marked and scored with a small triangle file to simulate 4 foot scale sections and drilled holes in the ends of each section to allow the crew access. Using a high temp soldiering Iron I chard the scored marks, holes, and edges to give it a bit of character
I am working on the other side , now hopefully I can get it done tonight , but the admiral has other plans I believe.
Hope you like the progress, and thanks for looking in😁

Ladder finally in position, darkened and varnished.

Before the glue is entirely dry, I place the ladder in to his position in the model (not yet gluing it fast), so the glue can harden further while the ladder has its final shape.

After sanding for a bit I got up enough confidence to assemble the frames to the keel. Now I wait for them to dry .Then I can pull out the spacers and tack in some temporary stiffeners to fair the inside and out .Everything is square and true right now I hope it stays that way once all the clamps and bands are removed. 🤞🏻
We shall see what tomorrow brings

The repair on the frame feels strong , I will do a bit more sanding to it then take care of any cosmetics if needed.
i also worked on another cannon barrel using same technique as used on the first barrel, I still need to make wheels for the second carriage and finish fitting them with hardware for rigging.
I will continue to play with my frames , sanding , cleaning, and dry fitting them today in hopes to get them assembled next week.

I intend to paint the lower deck in white. I guess that it would be very difficult to do so when the gun deck is already in place, so beams, knees, carlings and ledges are not glued already. I remove them again and will paint them before gluing on position.
