Hi Vivian
There is something about these Chinese ships that makes you want to build one as soon as you see it for the first time. Very neat work so far. I just know this will be a masterpiece when completed!

So, have been on my Red Dragon and here are the results:
First planking of the hull finished. Used the nails from the kit and decided to keep them.
internal view
After that, sanded, sanded, sanded and got a smooth sensation on sliding my hands across the hull.
Decided to put a movable deck on the bottom of the compartment I´ll show. Everything shall be painted dark red down there.
Began hull´s second layer planking. Did not like the wood shine, but after a little sanding, it goes away. Hope the varnishing don´t bring it back.
As planking the hull is a slow process, began to work on my false deck, opening a hole before planking. After that, lined the bulkheads on the false deck and began to plank. The hole is there for the compartment view.
And that´s it for now. Practicing patience while the glue dries!! =D

Hi All, Had to do a little reconstructive surgery earlier today, not too much just that I was unhappy with the fit of some planks against those above them, particularly around the gun-port areas so I popped them off (I originally laid the strake full plank length across the ports, but when I examined them after removal of the Clothes Pegs and Clamps I saw slight gaps, so I rough cut the planks to expose the ports and in so doing made them shorter thus allowing them to sit better)
Still no photos as I don't think anyone will wish to see a bunch of Clamps & Pegs, unless of course someone has a 'Clamp & Peg' fetish! that case just sing out and I'll take a few pikkies for you.. I won't judge.. honestly (you are after all talking to a 'Plank Taster' remember)
It's all go over here on Ballahoo eh!
More exciting updates later..
Eamonn
Ok Ok you talked me into it here's some Gratuitous Clamp & Peg And Pin Shot's..
The layer visible with the Pins in, is just there to compress the 2nd layer against the top one!

Yes Sjors, here's a little bit of work. I.ve done the Channel boards, the ladder ropes and the bowsprit wood work. There's a few little gremlins here as the metal parts for the Jack top don't fit well, so I made some wooden ones. The mast caps supplied in my kit are all one size, so I'll end up making some as I have with the bowsprit. For now I'll just continue with the masts. The plans called for a bowsprit of a given length, which is no real mystery. However, the bowsprit seems too long by about 40mm. I might have to trim it down a little.
Matt.

Hi all, finished my copper plates.. adding 10 hours to log..
It was all going well till i noticed a few of plates were not holding... this could have been due to oil from fingers whilst cutting and filing... i advise sanding or scratching the back of plates to ensure a good bond.. any that seemed at all loose, i removed and re applied with scratched up back, they held well...
Planning what to do next, rudder parts will be a while.. Will probably tackle, channels, anchors, skylight and other pin rails etc.. It all should start to come together now as i have already finished many deck fittings.. Thanks for looking.. Regards Ollie

At Long Last I have Good News to Report...
Yup! you guessed it, my timber arrived this morning and I have the first row of planking in place on the bulwark (just the Starboard side mind you)
I have cut the timber for each row (strake) up into the scale equivalent of approx.18 foot planks.
I should be able to get a few more strakes done on both sides tomorrow.
Thanks for checking in folks, and for keeping an eye on me during the Great Timber Drought of '14..
Incidentally I think Nigel was right when he said that CMB don't always have product in stock when they take an order, even though sometimes they have 'Temporarily out of Stock' marked on some items... as a quick check on the invoice dates show that my shipments are only traveling just over 9 days! (as opposed to the 3 weeks as of tomorrow, since my order was placed)
Will have All New Shinny Photos Soon...
Take Care.

Oh wow! That looks great Ollie!
It was very interesting to read of the different methods/ways to do the copper plating, and although I am not sure which is "correct" I have to say that yours just looks incredible

Hi Ollie, I have poked my nose in once or twice to have a look at your build, but felt I needed to add a comment on your excellent planking and plating - your Mermaid looks nice.
cheers

Hi all. I have spent about 10 hours since last mention of time..
I am plodding away at plates and really enjoying it.. Happy with the effect.
Thanks for all the help and ideas as usual gang.. I have done the gore line technique and now i have a straight line to work off back towards water line.. I decided to raise the waterline at bow, it seems to show this on the instructions mdel..
Will post another pic when copper is done.. Thanks all.. Ollie

Hi folks, a small update having rebuilt the broken jib and doing some repairs. In the interim I have made the gaff, and started the standing rigging for the jib and mizzen mast. The close up photos have been sharpened to show the rope and rigging detail which has highlighted some rope fuzz and raggedy ends that needs repairs. Unfortunately this photo process also shows all the dents etc in the wood and exposed a few paint touch-ups that are required ( a good thing I suppose )
All comments and constructive criticism appreciated.
cheers

I then started on the port and starboard which gave me so much trouble This time I was a little more careful in cutting them out.
After scribing the tabs were able to bent a little easier and closer to the line.
So far so good. I like the end result so far.

Out of sheer stubborness I decided to put on the last piece I cut out.
Then I proceeded with the glue up. The difficult part of this was keeping the edges even.
At this point I used a set of siccers to hold it together
After I was done I was not happy with the end result. Since I now have an idea I am going to start over some some thicker stock. This card modelling is beginning to intrigue me.

Over the years I have worked in plastic and wood. Kit, modified kit and scratch. Since I am now staying with my sister for severe medical reason I do not have the luxery or the room to have my work shop. I did bring a kit with me that I can work on with my tool box. However of my club members came to several meeting with card models that he built and they were fantastic. As a result I am putting my hat into the ring. The only mess I am making is paper. The tools are needed are easy to obtain. And I find the challenge thrilling. I may redo this one a couple of times until I get the technique down and the right weight of paper.
Thanks for looking in. My 1/96 scratch build of the Benjamin W. Latham must be put on hold.

Hi Alistair.. Yes what you said sounds right in regards to this method, but i am in the deep end paddling with you mate.. Even my pictures in plans show two techniques.. many ways to skin a cat type scenario i suppose.. One shows stealers at stern and one shows horizontal, parallel plates.
I also studied Rays Diana and Pegasus, you pointed me towards and like the way it finished up.. I tended towards this method for whatever reason.. The look i think.. I like having to cut less plates.
Also whilst my plates do not actually overlap i am visualising that they are so plates are cut accordingly.. I hope that helps you understand my choices.. Ollie
Heres a couple of pics from booklet to show you what i mean, i will be cutting up to the top row (which is already fixed now) as i see this as being much safer than cutting the water line on the ship as advised in plans.. .. one slip and your gone..
i didnt buy the dvd but you can watch part of it on the coppering, on youtube.. (modellers shipyard)
