pete48 got a reaction from Timothy Wood in Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 14' by pete48 - FINISHED - 3/4" = 1' - SMALL
Today I started by lowering the camber on the rear cockpit bulkhead , I then realized that the Transom knee needed to be cut down to allow for the rear deck . On the forward cockpit bulkhead , I cut out the frame brace to match the deck camber of the birch ply . I then installed the bulkheads and layed out the cockpit seats ( another one of those trickier than I thought situations ) I then cut out 4 seat braces for aft of the cockpit and 2 larger ones for the bow. This is because the deck angle change's sharpley for the cockpit coaming . I then turned my attention to the Keel . I filled in the bottom of the keel with wood ( this normaly would be the Lead part of the keel ) I then faired it in with the rest of the Boat. Here are the results

Today I worked on making the cockpit coamings . First I finished installing the cockpit coaming backing on the fore and aft bulkheads. I then cut out the rear deck bracing ( as per plan ) Now the coaming's are the tricky part, there is no detail on the construction plan . ( other than the sheer profile ) I first made a template out of card board with the measurement s that were provided to me by the construction plan. I decided that my coamings would also act as the seat back, so my board would have to be wide . once the template was close I transfered it on 1/16" ( wich scales out perfect ) Material, soaked them in alcohol for 2 hours and bent them close to there location.( The coamings will be installed after the deck is on ) I left the top of the coamings tall, so that when the deck is on it will be easier to scribe the sheer ( because of forward deck camber makes it tricky at the transition point )Here are the results

Thanks Pete. Finally getting this ship building "going full sails". Just started the second layer of planking.
The kit came up short with a couple of 2x2mm walnut strips for the hull so I am waiting for the mail to bring them to me.
So, here is where I was at last night. Bending that walnut strip like that without breaking was a pain in the a**!!!

pete48 got a reaction from Erebus and Terror in Herreshoff 12 1/2 prototype by pete48 - FINISHED - 3/4" = 1' - SMALL
Today, I finished trimming up the frames that I had cut then fit them in the keel. I did end up cutting 6" (Scale ) off the seat top and adding 4" ( Scale ) it to the notch for where the transom sits.other than that the Calculations seem to be good and on track to having the 12 1/2. I then dry fit all the frames in the Keel ( and for illustration purposes, I am using the Rudder in the jig to hold up the transom ) Next will be to figure out and lay out the bench seats in the Cockpit. then cut them out as well as cutting in for the Ribbands. Here are the results, ( one shot has Her next to Her big sister )

Looking at the workmanship of the rest of the boat, I'd say this builder knows exactly what he is doing.

Looking at the pics I can't help but think that is the finished product.I suspect the other side is fully planked and this side is to be left open to show the frames. This does follow actual construction process on the real thing but can't help think it is frought with problems on a model even with a planking expansion drawing.
Kind Regards

I can understand how this might work out fine. There really is not much of a relationship between what's happening at the bow vs. the stern. As Wayne says, this could be how it was actually done. Glad you brought it up as it gives us something to consider.
For me, I couldn't stand the suspense of waiting to see how it's going to work out. I'll continue with the more traditional method of laying belts.

Pete,
She looks really nice! I told you earlier that my aunt has one of these (Zephyr) and that I've had the good fortune to sail her many times. There's a bizarre jib sheet arrangement that only uses one line reeved through a block on the aft end of the club. I guess that's better than two sheets?
Anyway, you're doing a great job
Tom
PS Weren't you about to move to Oregon? Are you still at CdA?

Thank you Pete I am feeling chuffed to actually put an idea into practice that nobody else to my knowledge has done before As I said to Eamonn it is a slow process and much care is needed, but the results seem superior to other methods. When I have a little time,I will post a little tutorial on using it as the techniques differ a little to using paper due to the very delicate nature of the tissue.
Kind Regards
Nigel

Hi Nigel, in the long run it will look fantastic, so I think that its worth the time involved, I will deffenitly try this method in the future.

Thanks mate Yes it has a nice warm hue to it when finish is applied. It can be a pain to work with as the add piece has some wacky grain pattern to it and has resulted in a couple of planks hitting the recycling The tissue I am more than pleased with,it gives the sharp line but not quite as wide as paper.the strength issue is also sorted as I glued the waterway sections together into one length and fitted and bent it as one piece! The deck laying process due to the tissue and tapering is ridiculously slow, but I am confident worth it in the long run.
Kind Regards
Nigel

pete48 reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Update time...
I needed a break from cutting out frames having done about half of them so far. So.... installed the first three frames, added spacers for strength and position, and cut the bridle port. The keel is just set into position as are the upper and lower sills for the port to help in squaring everything up.
The bridle port is build up on the frame sides and the upper and lower sills rest on the "build up" with the middle frame being cut out for the port. Thankfully, it's the only one like this. The rest are cut into the frames. There's a conumdrum on the plans. The cut-away with the ports outlined is more "square" where as the framing plan shows the fore end of this port higher on the hull. I went with the framing plan. I hope I picked correctly.
