pete48 reacted to themadchemist in Biloxi schooner by Russ - FINISHED - 1/48 scale - POB
Nice paint job Russ.
That 2nd photo really shows off her sheer-line. What a beautifully lined schooner.
I really like the way the rubbing strake smoothly forms into the cutwater, plus that carves hawse makes the bow a very interesting and delightful shape.
Have fun this weekend and don't forget the camera. I'm glad the weather moved east finally.

Finally an update.
I have managed to get a few coats of paint on the hull. It is getting there. Maybe another coat and then the red underbody.
The deck house is coming along. I had tried stick framing the deck house, but I think the solid bulkheads work better at this scale. I have begun planking the shell to give it that finished look. Still a ways to go on this piece.
Questions and comments welcomed.

Green!? You mean they're not supposed to be the same color? Damn!
Michael, coach, Thanks.
John, If there was a house flag it's design has long been lost. So I was thinking of flying a 45 star Union Jack (not to be confused with the British Union Jack). The US Union Jack is white stars on a blue field and can be flown at the bow when the ship is NOT underway. Inasmuch as the ship will be sitting on pedestals, I guess that's ok.

pete48 reacted to Jim Lad in Francis Pritt by Jim Lad - FINISHED - Scale 1:48 - Australian Mission Ship
Well, it's been a lonnnnnnnnnnng time since I've posted an update. This is partly due to the fact that not a lot of progress has been made, partly because I've missed a couple of days at the museum and also partly due to the fact that I keep forgetting to take my camera with me when I go in to the museum!
A few more frames have been raised and hopefully the framing will go a little more quickly from now on. I'm finally at the stage where the remainder of the frames are rough cut, so while I'm waiting for glue to dry on one frame I can be finishing the next one ready for fitting.
A couple of frames are going to need adjustment at the fairing stage as, for some unknown reason they're slightly too long - but too long is easy to cut down at the final fairing stage.

If my memory serves me this craft was painted the way the fisherman wanted it to identify it. There was no standard shade.

pete48 reacted to usedtosail in USS Constitution by usedtosail - FINISHED - Model Shipways - scale 1/76
OK, now the frame is really all set to start planking, which will have to wait a few days as I will be away this weekend.
I painted the insides of all the gun ports and around the outsides of them too, although only the gun deck ports really needed this for the recessed planking that will go around them. Despite the great research and discussion that is going on in some of the other Conny build logs regarding lack of lids in 1812, I want to add the gun port lids so that I can close off the ports with the dummy cannons. So, I will be leaving a recess around the ports for the lids to fit in.
I was most concerned about the paint around the inside edges of the gun deck ports, since I had already painted the inner planks. I was quite pleased with the results, with not too much touching up of the off white paint needed.
Finally, I was finally able to trim the bulwark extensions to almost the real height. I left them a little long to sand down to the planking later. I also trimmed the transom extensions at the same time, although I left them a little taller.
Hopefully, the next update will show some planks on her.

Yesterday I installed the Transom and started fairing. Today, I finished fairing the Frames to get it ready for planking, I then soaked 1/4" X 1/16" X 24" strips in alcohol . After the fairing was complete, I then was able to get 4 rows of planking installed . Here are the results

Today I started by squaring up the frames in the Cockpit section. I then decided to cut in 2 Cockpit Floor Stringers, ( 3/ 32 " square stock )I figured I would square and plumb this section of the boat first. ( this would be from stations 6'- 0" to 13' - 6" ) after that section was glued , I then installed the rest of the frames working from the cockpit to the Bow. By working this way has kept the Boat square and plumb ( I am very pleased ) Next will be to install the rib bands the Transom and fair the frames. Here are the results

I unpacked all the frames and the keel and dry fit all the frames, There are 3 frames that I will replace with new ones and square everything up and start building. Here are the results

This afternoon I finished cutting all the frames , I re lofted the Transom and changed it out so that it will line up better with the Cockpit Coaming. To this Point nothing has been glued, and the new Transom is being held on with masking tape, I still have to true up all the frames and finish sanding the new frames. Here are the results

Last Night I was able to squeeze in a few hours , So I finished cutting the frames that I had laid out, ( I cut out the frames that will give me a basic shape first) I only have to make 5 more frames . Nothing has been glued together and I used a piece of masking tape to hold the Transom on (its crude but hey it works ) To this point everything has gone smoothly. Here are the results

I Started by Taking 1/8" X 4" Basswood and lofting the lines (profile ) drawing on it. And I am using 3/32" X 4" for the frames and started lofting them out as well , I did get a few frames cut ( I see myself going thru alot of #11 Blades) Here are the results

This morning I woke up and Deciced that I would start the Buzzards Bay 14 ftr . I was originaly planning on building Capt Nates 12 1/2 , However I cannot find the plans for it (the last time I saw them was when I was planning on a full size build) anyway, I do have the plans for the Buzzards Bay 14 ftr. wich was designed by Francis Herreshoff (son of Nathanael Herreshoff) a slightly larger version of the 12 1/2. (12 1/2 is the water line length) The Buzzards Bay has a 14 foot Waterline. I still plan on building the 12 1/2 in the future. Here is what I have so far

Today I finally got the final coats of paint on Keel # 3 for a total of 9 including 2 coats of primer, I got that fiberglass gloss that I was hoping for, I then shaped the rudder and sprayed 2 coats of primer. I then turned my attention to Keel # 4 I first installed the winow glass . ( I use the plastic from X-Acto blade refill packages ) I then made the cabin top, the hatch rails ( I found a unique knot in the wood that I used for the inside face of the inside hatch rail ) and installed them I then took some Birch ply for the cabin face then installed some Mahogany for the drop board rails . Here are the results

( I wanted to capture the tumblehome and the transom in 2 of the photos )Here are the results

This Morning has been exciting so far, as I am setting up the Frames on Keel 4 , I thought I would show some pics before I glue it together . I always set my base level to the waterline, That way all the frames are plumb to the waterline. (just remember square is square and Level is Level) Here are the results

On Keel 3 I took some strips that I had stained a few days ago, I soaked them in rubbing alcohol (about 30 minutes) and bent in Ribs between the frames. They have not been glued yet. Here are the results

I woke up early this morning (about 5 am) and just got finished planking Keel 3 (8 pm) there were breaks in between . and managed a basic fairing of the Hull. There is tumblehome that starts just aft of the fish wells so the top planks are basically untouched untill the deck is on, so that it (the tumblehome) can roll over the top . Here are the results

Today I got to work on Keel 4, I figured out the centerboard & Trunk. I first cut out the centerboard (this made the keel very weak) I had made up 2 pieces of 1/32" birch plywood to cover the trunk.I attached one piece of the ply on to hold the keel together, I then took a piece of thin plastic (from the exacto package) folded it in half and cut it to 1/8" wide strip. Then I drilled a hole thru the top of the Trunk into the centerboard so that a wire could pass thru, On the centerboard I added a loop so that it would connect to the first wire. I then cut the transom off similarly to what I had done on Keel 3, and put it together. Here are the results

Thank you Tom, Frame 1 is visible when the companion way hatch is open . I actually strengthened aft of frame 4 (it was a weak spot on the previous builds) after fairing the frames. I also had cut off the stern and re attached it , to allow for the working rudder As far as CDA Freinds and family understand
Best Regards,
Pete
