    Hello all together

the port of the Half Moon is done --- he he..she turns into a Full Moon...

I hope you all will appreciate that I used some nut-stripes instead of the original tanganica-Wood-stripes for the planking of the keel. Next will be the second part of the hull. The work goes on and on in a very satisfying matter...

    Comments are welcome

Thanks for the comments. I have been spending a bit of quality time with the family for the holidays but I did squeeze in a bit of shopping in to pick the paints up for the build. I chose a rustoleum marine white, and bought a quart of it on sale, also a high gloss pale yellow for the deck along with a high gloss black for some details. My wood finishes will be a mix of mahogany and some English oak tones, with a bright poly finish. I have also scored a new workbench that I have to organize for future builds, it's about 7 ft long and has a butcher block top.
I was just admiring Ron's work on his gaff rigged Alden. I am really interested in how his boom was attached to the mast as I really dislike the eyelets that come in the kit.
Pete, love your start on the Buzzards Bay 14. I'm following your progress on that beautiful Daysailer.

    Cheers to all.

Nice work. I love the details and how you manage to crank out keel after keel. My shipyard is stagnant in comparison.

Today, I actually got to get some work in on keels 3 and 4. On Keel #3 I finished fairing the hull and installed the Cutwater. I also got the first coat of varnish on the hull. On Keel #4, I started planking the Hull, I went ahead with 1/4" for the first or top plank and I am using 1/8" the rest of the way Here are the results

My Internet was down last night, so here is the progress that was made on Keel 4 , all the frames have been Faired and is now ready for planking, On this one I am going to use 1/8" strips for planking ( I used 1/4 " on the previous builds) I am happy with the results thus far on Keel 4. Here are the results

As the Holidays  approach , the build time becomes less time. On Keel  # 3  I installed the deck and trimmed the excess wood off the transom ,I then Installed my make shift rudder and tiller to make sure all is functioning properly, ( It does) and that tiller and rudder can be easily installed and removed from the boat  . (also works well)I also cut out for the companion way hatch so you can now see the figured Birch on frame 1. Here are the results

    Thanks, Robert, Patrick, and Clay!

In between checking out everyone else's "new" logs this afternoon, I managed to make some cleats.

Hoping to make it easier to get them somewhat uniform, I tried this method:

I cut a spare strip of planking stock into appropriate lengths.  These were glued up (with Elmers white glue aka PVA) into "blocks" of six at a time--

The block of cleats was then shaped to the basic profile using sandpaper, chisels and files--

    Isopropyl alcohol weakens the glue--

And they are separated back into individual pieces for fine-tuning with a file--

I need two different sizes--here's a shot of some of the rough "blanks" including two finished cleats--

What a great time of the year, not only the holidays, but all the college football games.  I’m not going to get much done on this build for the next three weeks.   I did manage however to clean up the bulkheads and dry fit them, that’s when I found out #14 (third from end) was bad.  You can see in the first picture #14 is not big enough.  So it was back to the drawing board, so to speak, I use DraftSight, and I did find the error.   Picture two shows both #14 bulkheads and then how the new part lines up.

And with that I’ll say Merry Christmas to all, with wishes for a great 2014.

I saw another model Sakonnet being modeled on here after I picked up my kit and thought I would post a log as well. I picked this kit up for a very modest price of $10 at a swap meet and didn't even know if it was complete but the instruction were and I figured I could scratch build any missing parts. I'm new to ship modeling but have done quite a lot of planes and cars, mostly plastic. I figured I would tackle this with a small project before attempting a larger one. I've got my follow on projects already planned, a MS Rattlesnake vintage carved plug that was given to me for dirt cheap and I'd like to scratch build a Clipper or the 1797 Constellation. I know pretty ambitious but here is my start to this Alden Classic.

Started with the keel, it was already punched out with a few chunks from the rudder area, so I figured I might try and hinge it? I dry fit the frames and then glued them. I didn't have a fancy alignment jig, so I squared them up with clothes pins and a tiny metal machinist ruler I have.

I beveled the transom bulkhead at the top to accept the deck by carving it away with my hobby blade and then rough sanding.
I then attached the deck with rubber bands to clamp it and added the stringers, I had to cut one of the 1/16th stringers(Chines) out of balsa as the kit supplied piece was not long enough for both.

So far so good, next I'm going to prime all the inner areas with some clear coat before smoothing the frames for interior paint.
I took some time to also to trace out the frame pieces to build a follow on kit in the future as well. I really love this style of small sailboat. My real life Daysailer is a 1969 Ghost 13 by Janus, it's fiberglass but it gets us out on the water.

the journey continues with the bulwark planking.   I'd do a little here,  and a little there.....in between,  messing with other things.  since I had the one called Larry on the slip,  I continued with the planking until the bulwarks were complete.  I even did a little sanding,  along with the sanding at the stern,  to eliminate the plank stubbles.

next was the one called Moe.......it was refreshing to work with real plywood,  even though it was a bit harder to use pins

the third row on each one of them has the butt joint in the same place.   it was time to lay the fourth row.

last,  but not least,  was the one called Curly.   I got tied up with  'other things'.........but I did manage to get all the planking done.

I did say that I was going to bounce around and do some sub assemblies.  I decided to do a bit of work on the Boulogne Etaples........the host of this little fiasco.   it was pretty cool to see the four hulls together.

with all the bulwark planking done..........I can move on

We'll, Pete, my wife asked me tonight what was I going to do with the boat when I'm done. I dunno; I've got 4 of my models sitting in a neighbor's basement for lack of any other space.

Good morning Dan. excellent question, it has been something that I have been wondering about myself.
I had asked Russ about the rails on his sloop and about the sorts of clearances needed to make things like rails and pins workable. when I did a Google search for fife rails they appear to be all over the map(both literally and figuratively)regarding heights and sizes.

The top of the rail on mine is 9 inches above the deck and the pins are also 9 inches long, short perhaps for a ship but long enough I think for this size of boat she is basically 40 foot long, well 42 feet. My cap rail is only 8 inches above the deck as well.

The other option is to redo the whole rail and make it higher, I wouldn't rule out that option either.

Oh there are so many things that I will do differently on the next cutter well smack actually I want to do a working fishing boat based on the Gloucester fishing smacks. after the launch or when this cutter is finished. this is proving to be a very interesting learning curve. The more I learn the more I realize how little I know.

    Denis thanks for your encouragement.

Pete, Elia, Alan, Druxey, and Tim. Thanks for your kind remarks and encouragement. and all the likes

Regarding the forward hatch and the dovetails, I might be confusing you or I am confused.

The dovetails on the Cabin structure will remain as they are there will be no rounding. I was referring to the small Mahogany hatch forward of the fife rail. the corners on it were mitered and not dovetailed and it was already rounded, but it was taller and heavier looking.

You have got me thinking now that I might have to build a new one out of pine with square corners that are dovetailed.

A little more progress. The funnel assembly has been painted, but Ive spent most of my time on trying to get the moulding around the pilot house roof correct.
    A picture:

There are four stays to support the funnel that need adding. These have turnbuckles at their base. At first, I thought I might be able to fashion something in brass, but then realized that their diameter is 1-1.5" which, in scale, is less than a mm. So I'm not sure I can add a lot of detail there.

The other thing I notice in this photo is how gross the moulding is around the boat deck edge compared to what I did on the pilot house:

It took me 5 tries to do this, 1 in cherry, 3 in basswood, and finally, deciding not to be so cheap, the final one in boxwood. Works much better Wish I'd done that with the rest of them.

Anyway, there it is. Here's the overall:

One final point: Those are Andy's dentils on the pilot house. His dentist and I are good pals now!
