Some good ideas there. You are achieving an excellent "aged" look.

Just to clarify, here a couple of pics. I bashed my SM so the bulwarks are different but their positioning is identical to the kit instructions.

First of all, thanks for encouragement from Aussie, Senior ole salt and AntonyUK and all who ticked "Like this".

Rigging finished except for Sampan and port and starboard companionway rigging.

Then on to make and rig anchors.

I'm thinking of donating this model to a model supplies shop here in Tenerife.Three have closed because of the recession so I would hope that seeing a finished model in their shop window might encourage others to take up the hobby and support this last shop that is teetering along.

Might put a load of tea chests on the deck as these cargo junks brought tea in to load the clippers.

    Mainsail Rigging

I've followed Arne Kverneland's scheme in rigging this junk.

    http://www.junkrigassociation.org/Resources/Documents/Arne%20Kverneland%27s%20files/Junk%20Rig%20for%20Beginners.pdf

I rigged in the following order:
Batten parrels Halyard hoist Sheetlets and euphroe Tack line and tack parrel Yard hauling parrel Lazy jacks An extra clew line to create tension on the rigging
The stay on the mizzen mast is a temporary feature.

Vivian's question about figureheads prompts me to talk about the stern decoration of junks. Many of the hundreds of illustrations of Chinese junks that you can view on the internet show an enormous range of stern decoration, and the bigger the junk, the more ornate the artistry.

Not being an artist of any merit, I used a modified Amati pattern and coloured it with poster paints. I used a monstrous face as anyone who has spent time in the Far East will know that Chinese art falls into two broad categories, either delicate washes in watercolour and ink or brightly coloured monstrous figures of demons or dragons. My attempt falls into the latter "school" but that presents a problem of coordinating the colours with the Walnut, Pear and Sapele used in the hull construction.

My solution was to paint the lower hull off-white (actually "cotton white" whatever that is) and frame the stern decoration in the same colour. I think it successfully links the two elements. What do you think?

    In the sailmaker's loft

One of the problems at working at this scale, 1:100 is to keep things in proportion. For example, using 5 mm dia. material for the main mast means it would  be a 5 metre diameter mast at deck level!

I used placemat material as pictured to make the battens.

So here we go, not too sure about some of the "improvements" but when we get more clutter on the deck they may fall into place.

Absolutely agree with you on the pumps. Well, that's because of this.......

"Fifteenth and sixteenth century ship's pumps consisted of three main components: a pump shaft, a piston rod and valves......early suction pumps worked on the simple mechanical principle of drawing water up through a tube...... with a one way valve.

The pump shaft was fashioned from a a straight tree trunk ...or fashioning a tube of individual planks, like the staves of a barrel.....The base of the pump shaft in the bottom of the bilge was fitted with a foot valve made up of short baulk of bored wood fitted with a leather flapper valve on top........Water usually exited the pump tube through a hole in its side near the top above deck level.

On the fourth voyage, Columbus was forced to stand for Jamaica, "especially since the ships were so eaten by shipworms, that day and night we never stopped pumping water with the three pumps. If one broke down, kettles were substituted for the job while it was being fixed. Despite these efforts, the caravels could not be kept afloat and at God's mercy, we beached in Jamaica."

Extracts from "Vanguard of Empire - Ships of Exploration in the Age of Columbus"  Roger C. Smith. Oxford University Press. A fantastic resource for information on the architecture and building of ships of this period.

Bug, your detail looks very authentic, makes me want to go back and redo mine!

"I have found this to be a fairly painful process. This much handling of small fine pieces of wire punctures the finger tips quite frequently and I'm getting quite a layer of scar tissue. I cut the shaped chain sections with side cutters then grind the ends flush with a disc on my Dremel. I have brushed the edge of the disc a couple of times with a finger. This smarts too! Heart and soul into a model obviously isn't enough, some blood also helps."

David, I want you to know that us followers are sharing your pain.  Pleae don't stop. We promise to bandage your broken fingers when you have finished teaching us how to construct a superb model..

One day we must talk about the carelessness that allowed the flagship of this voyage of discovery to founder upon a reef in relatively calm waters.

Nope, that won't do, rum had not been produced in the Caribbean until a little bit later as nobody was growing sugarcane. There is a tale that Columbus stopped off here in the Canary Islands, at La Gomera, one of the seven islands of this archipelago called the Canaries, on his way to fame and fortune. He had intended a short stay but had a little jolly with the then governor, Beatriz de Bobadilla y Ossorio, and stayed a month. She in return gave him, as a going away present, cuttings of sugar cane. To keep him sweet I imagine.

I don't see any of this in the Diario, the only mention of the Canaries was the fitting out of the Niña in Las Palmas but it is supposed that this tale represents the way sugar cane entered into the Caribbean and ended up, some 450 years later with Winston Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty, describing the Royal Navy as only interested in Rum, Bum and Baccy. Make of that what you will.

Indeed marktime.   A tragedy in many ways.

In the meantime - here's her temporary home in my office until after the new year, when the Admiral will allow her to be moved a place of more prominence.

Well folks... looks like she's done.  Here she is - the completed Santa Maria.  I'll edit and post more of the finished photos, then eventually her final port of call - I have to wait for the Admiral to clear off the Christmas decorations after the new year before the Santa Maria can rest in her final spot.
