alde got a reaction from Bindy in Bounty Launch by alde - Model Shipways - Small
The Sheer Clamps have been installed and the Thwart Risers are clamped in place for forming. They will be installed tomorrow. No Treenails on this one for me. At this stage in my building experience I just want to get one under my belt. As I learn more and gain more confidence I will strive for more detail. Right now it's just learning the basics. I have to say that this is a whole lot more fun for me than plastic.

Tom, very nice progress with the gundeck. Are you putting any type of illumination into this to see some of the details you're planning on adding?

Al, I will have to look for it on Amazon and order it. Thanks for the heads up on it.
Just so you all don't think that I haven't been thinking about ship building, I have a small update. I went to my local Woodcraft store today and found a 1/4" sheet of birch plywood. I have to say that it doesn't have the grain I'd desire to plank with but the quality and rigidity make it perfect for a false keel. I also managed to pick up several blocks of decent boxwood to carve various fittings from. I haven't even cut into this wood yet and already I like it better than basswood. At any rate, I drew a straight line on the plywood and cut out some plan copies of the false keel and adhered them to the ply using rubber cement. Tomorrow I will have to break out the scroll saw and cut this big sucker out. As always, thanks for looking in and I appreciate any and all comments (including the critical ones).

Just to muddy the waters regarding what material to use for the cant and 'tween frames, I have checked my boneyard ...
...and have discovered that I should have enough pieces of sufficient length to make these - but only just barely.
Of course, some will need to be re-soaked to straighten them before re-bending to fit where they need to go on my Launch.
Am I dumb enough to try this ... ???
Do you REALLY need to ask that question ??

The battle of Cherrywood Framing was fought to a decisive end last eventide, with the Twelve finally being vanquished and bending to CaptainSteve's will.
Twas a hard-fought battle, and many occasions came whence our hero didst strongly consider a Viking funeral:
('Tis a large match-stick which ye shouldst note was used to affixeth the stem piece to the bow alignment blocks.)
As has been written by many of the heroes who have come a-fore, skeletons aplenty didst plague our brave adventurer. Indeed, so many of these undead beings haunt CaptainSteve's boneyard that he ponders whether or not enough material remains to battle the Cant and 'tween Frames which the Plans have prophesied.
"'Twouldst be a close thing," he was heard to say, forlornly.
As sucheth, our gallant hero is currently considering whether or not to form an alliance with strips of the Sapelli tree, salvaged from past battles.
"Two millimetres in width, they are. In depth, they be the same. Of dark reddish-brown they be in hue."
Were CaptainSteve to take this path, then 'twouldst be necessary to dye the fruit of the Cherrywood tree already affixed. Verily, he is most in favour of a Walnut dye, as the planking shalt be of Ye Olde Baltic.
"Wouldst make a nice contrast, methinks," he declared.
"What sayeth thee ??" he asked of the assembled horde.

Getting there, Alde ... slowly.
Yours is looking very nice. Though I do hope you are wrong about the full-frame thing.
I bet you were most satisfied to be able to pop it off the Jig.

Put on the sails but leave them furled. This will show off the hull and at the same time show the detail for rigging.

Now that was close. When I ordered extra cherry sticks I asked for 5 or 6. The sent me 6 and I used a full five. These seemed more brittle than the ones that came in the kit. The sticks in from of the boat are breakage. This also again illustrates the need for more clamps than you think you need.

Steve, That's why I don't mind posting close up photos of my mistakes. It not only helps me but maybe somebody else down the line. As frustrating as it gets at times it's still fun to work through problems.

She came right off the mould with no problems. It inside looks pretty decent without too many weird spots. There is no excess glue to speak of and it feels really solid. I also didn't notice any tendency to spring to a wider dimension like some others have reported. I think the people that had this happen used one cherry stick for one continues frame.

I made a bit of progress on the hull. With a bit of filler, some sanding and a bit of primer it's looking better. I'm not sure I want to go much further on the sanding and such. It could be better but I'm happy with it so far.

Steve,
I don't have enough cherry wood to complete the tween frames and had to request some from Model Shipways. They did send the order out within a couple of days of the order but you being in Australia I'm sure it would take a while for you to get them. You may want to put in a request sooner than later unless you have a good local source.
I don't think you will have any trouble the the hull springing wider as long as you bend the frames tight to the forms.

The cherry wood is yielding to your superior prowess. You can go forth with much pride in having vanquished your foe.

The battle of Cherrywood Framing continues to be fought valiantly by our hero. CaptainSteve hath this very day removed from his Building Jig all of the temporary tabs, as these tended to hinder and block his main weapon, namely the Fearsome Curling Iron of Wood-Bendery.
Having studied extensively the battle-plans of the One known as Keith (formerly Amfibius - what happenedeth there ??), CaptainSteve feels that he now possesseth a better grasp of the ways of his foe, namely the Cherrywood Frames:
"Tis most important," didst Sir Keith sayeth unto him, "that thou understandeth the Ways of the Grain!!"
Indeedeth, armed with this highly potent knowledge of his foe's weakness, our hero has now conquered Six of the Twelve and can report that he is mostest happy with them.
"But thy boneyard doth containeth already too many !!" he declared mournfully.
Noteth that the foreground of the picture above doth contain four frames removed from a-fore. CaptainSteve continues to worketh with frames of 9inch, foregoing the claims of the One known as Bob The Builder that, verily, four and one-half of an inch shouldst be enough for any Man.
(Or, indeedeth, Woman. Hath thou not read-eth the Kama Sutra, Bob ??)
"These I have laid bare, for the standards of my fore-bears they didst not meet. I shall recycle them !!"
And with this statement, he didst leap back into the Fray.

Arr. I did not do away with them temporary tabs. Shiver me timbers that ye might have thunk that. Them planks will bend, if ye applyest thy steam iron and maketh sure thy grain is in the correct direction. If thou attemptest to bendeth thy planks in the wrong direction, thy planks shalt splinter - but in the opposite direction, they shalt bendeth nicely.

Oh no, not the frames. I broke so many I had to request a few extra from MS. I had enough to bend over the form but do not have enough for the framing that goes into the hull after it's poped out of the form. I only have 3 sticks left for that job. I soaked mine overnight in plain water. I will use some amonia on the tween frames and see if that works better.
They sure did burn TRANS deep enough. They really do need to put it next to the part.

Mike, They sure don't tell you any of this in the instructions. They need to be re-writen. This was the first planked hull that I tried and before I was a member on MSW and got frustrated with it. I didn't know anything about fitting and bending the planks. Soaking and pinning will go a long way to getting your planks right. You may also have to bevel the plank edges so the sit next to each other tight. Also, try a little amonia in the warm water when you soak the planks and give them a few hours to soak.

I built Midwest's Peterboro Canoe, and this part of the construction looks similar. What worked wonders for me was beveling the lower edge of each new plank as you add it. I did it by hand, by sanding the plank on the thin edge at an angle and it made all the difference. It will especially important as you move over the curve toward the keel.
One thing I had trouble with was conforming well enough to that curve to meet the keel properly - the planks really wanted to go higher than the keel. If you fight that battle early (keeping each plank on the bulkhead), it might be easier as your reach the keel. Good luck.
Andy.

Thanks for the tips. I think having a bit of primer on will help me just take down the high spots. I will also make a bunch of sawdust from my scrap to use as filler. It looks a lot better with the primer on.
I think where I got into trouble was the first bulkhead didn't quite touch the planking in some cases. This made the planks want to curl under a bit. It looks ok on the inside so if I get outside looking good with filling and sanding all will be good. Keep an eye on that CaptainSteve. You might have to add some material to the first bulkhead for the planks to flow.

I've making slow progress but the finish is near. I obtained the weathered mounting board ( cherry) a imitation sperm whales tooth.
The images shown below are missing the various line tubs, buckets and piggins that go with this model. The tubs have their lines faked down but I still have to "weather" the hoops. Also to soot up the sail some to kind of get some of the grimy whale blubber being processed aboard the whale ship.

Actually, you don't. This suggests to me that your planks should have been placed further aft. Too late for that now - as long as the planks reach the transom you should be fine. When I placed my planks, I clamped the fore end to the bow and stretched the plank till it overhung the transom. Each plank was tight to the bulkhead, and if it wasn't - I shaped it.
Anyway, you might be doing something right because you completed your planking without having to use any stealers. I did
