first, did French frigates such as Hermione have copper plating? I am building her, and plan to leave the hull natural, using walnut veneer planking. Should I copper plate below the waterline or leave it natural? In your opinion, what would look the best?

Greetings,

Joel is correct. Wooden Boat has just completed a series on the Hermoine replica and the bottom was painted out as shown in Joel's photo. According to the article, the ship is an exact replica except for the auxiliary propulsion/generator equipment and safety equipment.

And, as they sail to this side, unlike the Bounty replica which was lost in a storm with a crew of 16, the crew will be some 150 strong, about as many as were needed originally to sail a ship, exclusive of those needed to man the guns.  In other words, they will have enough personnel to deal with heavy weather should any be encountered.

Once upon a time, it would have a normal occurrence.  In today's world, that would be the trip of a lifetime.

The construction of the Frigate Hermione began in 1778.

The 74 gunship is in 1780 and has copper plating.

Copper plating began in France in 1778.

At his neuvage (when new) it was not copper plated. It was copper plated only few months  after.

Copper plating of Hermione began in november until december  1779 and needed 1100 plates.
