I was suggesting that you order some sticks from one of the custom guys. I think both charge about $1 per stick (24" in length) so depending on the width, you'd be in for $30-$40. I still think it would be a good opportunity to try the better cut wood for not a huge investment. donrobinson Posted January 16, 2017 #127 Posted January 16, 2017 I have this practicum, actually I have all of them that I bought when I first started two years ago. The second chapter is all about the hull planking, he does skip the second planking as "it is exactly the same as the first" and unless you want a natural hull there was no need for the second layer. I have not gone through the whole practicum yet just the planking chapter, which seems to be helpful. If you are going to paint the hull why use boxwood, I am talking about the Bluenose. Also it was not just about the wood, you'll get a better cut - straighter and more consistent. However, your point is well taken. I've turned into a boxwood bigot and will preach the benefits anywhere I get a chance. Brian, if you do decide to look into that, send the parts list to Jason at Crown and he can give you an estimate for full replacement (what I do now), just the hull, deck & hull - whatever you want. The only caution I would warn you of is boxwood stains differently than basswood. In other words the same stain will look different on the two woods. Cut it? No way, splinters. No matter how gentle you use the knife. I've actually had better luck sanding it. I can definitely see the advantages after using this and the basswood. Here's my verdict: Bluenose, $140 at model expo or $190 at Amazon. Boxwood, $45 Practicum, $120 $305, tax, shipping call it $340. Either way at my allowance I'll get back to you about her in a few months.
