Eddie Posted May 9, 2017 #1 Posted May 9, 2017 Hey howya goin all, what is the downside of using Minwax wipe on poly water based to compared the oil based one, whats the difference between the two types apart from water based and oil based? Dilbert55 Posted May 9, 2017 #2 Posted May 9, 2017 My master carpenter brother-in-law told me there is no problem using Minwax water based poly over Minwax oil based stain, so I used the wipe on satin poly over oil with no problems at all when finishing my hull 3 weeks ago. DocBlake Posted May 9, 2017 #3 Posted May 9, 2017 Oil based wiping varnishes tend to add "warmth" to the wood. Water based poly leaves the wood "cold" looking, especially darker wood like cherry and walnut. I use water based only with very light woods like maple and birch. It dries crystal clear, while an oil based finish typically has an amber cast to it.
