Good morning everyone, my name is Andrew and I'm a new member here on ModelShipWorld. I was convinced to join by an eBay member who recently sold me #139/200 of Bluejacket's USS Olympia kit. A little about myself, I'm a lifelong plastic modeler who took a pause during college. I recently left the military and with more time on my hands decided to jump back in with Bluejacket's 1/192 John C. Butler class destroyer escort which I am building as DE-404 USS Eversole which was sunk on October 28, 1944 by two torpedoes at the Battle of Leyte Gulf (http://www.navsource.org/archives/06/404.htm). 

 

I chose a more advanced wood kit because I'd gotten bored with the rote repetition of a plastic kit: snip, clean, glue, fill, sand. Repeat. Progress has slowed due to a move but if there is interest, I'll post a build log. The fact that nearly every major piece must be fabricated by the modeler has greatly improved my scratch-building skills. I plan on building a few more wooden kits, at the least. My long-term goal for the hobby is to culminate with a full plank-on-frame build of the USS Constitution; however, I have many skills to learn before then (ie. planking, rigging). After I complete the Eversole, I may try a beginner level plank-on-frame kit in order to start learning the skills needed for my goal. Until then, I plan on just enjoying the journey.

Welcome Andrew!  Plenty of ex-military around here.  A build log is always welcome.  There you can show off your work, ask questions etc.  There is always lots to learn and this is a great helpful and friendly place to do it.

Yes, please do post a build log. There are not too many logs for Bluejacket models on the site, nor are there a great many steel-hulled naval vessels, so your model would be a welcome addition. As I posted in another thread recently, I had a distant cousin aboard the Samuel B Roberts, so I have a bit of interest in the type. I look forward to watching your further progress.

If you're a fan of WWII naval history I would recommend "Japanese Destroyer Captain" by Tameichi Hara. It's a pretty decent read from the Japanese perspective of the naval battles of WWII. Naval Institute Press re-released this book a few years back.

I love WWII naval history. Just finished "The Battle of Midway" by Craig L. Symonds who instructs at the US Naval Academy and the US Naval War College. It's a dense book and I could not put it down. Highly recommend.

Thank you for the recommendation...adding it to the ever-growing Amazon books wish list. If you are also into WWII naval history, check out "Iron Coffins" by Herbert Werner. Memoir by one of the few U-boat captains to survive the war.

I have a question about the build log naming question...want to get it right the first time...so this kit is Bluejacket's USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413) but I am building it as the USS Eversole (DE-404).

Should I make the title of my build log:

 

USS Eversole by andygp5 - Bluejacket - Scale 1/192 

                                     OR

USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413) by andygp5 - Bluejacket Scale 1/192 - built as USS Eversole (DE-404) at Leyte Gulf, 1944

 

Maybe a moderator can advise?
