I have seen a number of holes in the decks for the masts. What supports the deck planks underneath the hole? Is something added under the false deck for support or is the false deck strong enough? Thanks.

The mast would fit into the mast partner that rested on the beams.  Here's a picture.   Note that four holes around the large hole are for the pumps.  After the mast was installed on the real ship, wedges would have been driven in to anchor it and set the mast angle.  See photo.

On your model, there usually some cutouts on the backbone.  With the false deck, the hole is generally the right size for the mast.   The instructions should show this.
