Endurance by Latitude59 - OcCre - 1:70

Just started last week, but I’m waiting for my order of 3 mm planks.  Been ripping some by hand to make scale planking and cabin siding.  I also cut out the front bulkhead like in photos of Endurance.  I’ll post photos of it when it’s done. Endurance plans show machinery inside under the deck.

nice work and welcome to the Endurance club- nice work spotting the "gap" under the anchor deck (spotted it too late myself)! The anchor windlass was on the deck underneath (bit akin to Cutty Sark set up but no cutaway deck).

Whelp….I’m not sure I like the weathering as it highlighted color differences in the wood, but what’s done is done and I’m not redoing it.  In hindsight, I should have cut deck planks to size and mixed them up so it would have been less stripey.  I’ve been looking over old photos and it looks like the cabin siding scales to about 1.5 mm planks and the front bulwark about 3.5 mm.  The portholes need to be bigger and were recessed so I’ll find some metal tubing and redrill the ports.

Nice work Latitude 59.

I am at the same stage with my Endurance build but didn’t use thinner planks for the deck.

Your model looks much more to scale.

I thought the portholes looked too small on the kit too.

Any idea what size they should be?

The cutout under the focsle looks good, the WC was on the left and lamp room on the right according to the plans online.

I am going to illuminate my model so light can be seen through the portholes, powered by some small batteries hidden in the base eventually. I bought some warm white LEDs from smallscalelights.

Also replacing the crude 3 blade propeller with a 25mm brass 2 blade prop as seen in photos during it’s refit.

Keep up the good work.

  • 2 weeks later...

I’ve been scouring over photos of Endurance and have found a lot of errors with the kit.  The front bulkhead should be open, the bits/cleats should be next to the windlass, the bridge from the Ritz to the cabin was three 2x12 boards laid down, there were no double vents next to the middle mast, the prop was two bladed, the half-moon prop cutout should be square, the planking on the aft cabin scales to about 1-2 mm, the planking on the Ritz scales to about 2 mm and planking on the front bulkhead scales to about 3 mm.  Deck planks appear to be about 6 inches and scale to around 2-3 mm. The portholes appear to be about 12-14 inches so I’ll use some 4-5 mm brass tube for those. The cats heads should be much shorter and the aft railing has a wood handrail.  The railings along the decks bend inwards and there are only two posts above the front bulkhead where the opening to the windlass is.  The aft hatch entry is rounded and The deadeyes are oversized.  There is some debate over doors but I’ve found some photos that make some look like sliding doors.  More to come on that.
