Hello everyone!

I’m diving into the world of model boating and have a few questions. As a beginner, I'm curious about the best materials to use for building model boats.

Are there specific types of wood or plastic that are recommended for durability and ease of handling?

Additionally, what techniques or tools should I consider for achieving smooth finishes and effective waterproofing?

I’d appreciate any tips or resources you could share.

First, welcome to MSW.

What is your interest?  Kits come with sufficient materials to make the boat.  As a novice, learn the skills first, then concern yourself with the "best" materials.  That is a concern for kit bashers and scratch builders.

Welcome! I agree that it would be helpful to hear more about your specific interests. Basswood is very commonly used in kits and in scratchbuilding, as it's cheap, readily available, and easy to work with. There are a lot of techniques for smooth finishes, and you can find plenty of discussions about that topic if you search for them. Build logs are also useful resources. Finally, you mention waterproofing, but you don't have to worry about that unless you're making a remote control model. Best of luck!

Before you take a deep dive into tools, etc. I'd like to suggest you look at Model Shipways 3 Model Beginner Set (https://modelexpo-online.com/Model-Shipways-Shipwright-3-Kit-Combo-Series-with-Tools-Glue-and-Paint_p_5290.html_ ).

The other bit of advice is only buy tools that you need and when you need them.   Too many spend big money on stuff they never use.

Also, do some research here at MSW by looking for things that interest you.  If you post what you're interested in, advice will be offered as where to look.  Also, we have a pretty powerful search engine (upper right hand side of any page) that can let you explore things to your heart's content.
