For a good reference on 17th century rigging, you may want to take a look at The Rigging of Ships in the days of the Spritsail Topmast, 1600-1720 by R.C. Anderson.  Very nice reference that covers a variety of European rigging.


Neither should a ship rely on one small anchor, nor should life rest on a single hope.
