The bow is quite brutal in its bend.
The problem is that if you don't get the plank right here, the errors grow with each new plank.
I recognize your planking, my first boat was even worse.
I don't think you can fix it all with regular putty, possibly 2-component putty.
The alternative is that you shape pieces of wood and fill in all the gaps, they don't have to fit exactly.
You can sand off the excess if you glue in pieces of strips, for example.
The important thing is that you don't get too caught up in this,
the first boat is rarely fantastic but you learn a lot when you build.

I see several people struggling with the planking of Sherbourne.
Here is a video where I think he succeeds quite well. Maybe it can be helpful.

Tapering and bending to shape a plank so it almost lays correctly without gluing is key to planking. It is a learned skill few of us get right the first time around.

I learned a great deal and after building a number of models re-crafted my own planking after watching thes Chuck Pisarro videos.  Here’s a link:  Planking videos

Whatever you do don’t be discouraged. I removed and replaced enough planking to cover three sides of a hull more often than not.

Regards,

Glenn

Thank you - I shall have a look at that.

Today I put on the planks immediately above the garboard plank, allowing room at the stern for a stealer.

The boat you can see just behind is a really bad boat which I found in an antique shop which I have stripped back, dyed the sail with tannin and will be re-rigging.  However that won't be getting its own build log!  It also means that I can play with a bit of rigging before I get there with the Sherbourne.

After a couple of weeks the hull is closed with the first planking.

Not entirely happy with everything that happened but I have learned a lot along the way.

Possibly a bit more sanding to do but then we press on with the second planking!

Good progress Paul, I quite like the sanding and fairing of the hull.  A tactile pass time and it is funny you can feel the imperfections with yours hands sometime better than looking at the hull.

From the pictures you posted agree possibly a bit more sanding filling at the bow, but a great job! 👍  You might want to put some tape of your pear stem and keel to protect them a bit for getting sanded and the fine etched details getting lost, like the horse-shoe plate location.

Looks great - certainly way better than my first planking on the Sherbourne. Definitely good to spend some time after the first planking filling in divots and sanding down high spots so that the second planking lies flat. A divot on the first planking will show up as a divot on the second. And if the high and low spots are big enough, there will be gaps in the second planking. Of course you can also rinse and repeat and fill and sand after the second planking. If you're painting over, it should be fine. But even when painting, it looks better to paint over planks than paint over sanded filler.
