Would anyone care to recommend a cad program for drafting ships?

I have a non-intel g5 mac runnning OSx 10.5.8

I would like to use it to create usable sheer & profiles from incomplete and poorly legible originals.

An example would be this draught of the HSM Resolution 1705 or maybe 1708 (I can't remember which).

Draftsight is free and runs on PC, Mac or Linux.

TurboCad for Mac is very good. It's not free, but it's relatively inexpensive.

I use Turbocad on a PC and love it. Easy to use and very powerful once you get a bit of practice with it.

From about as far from the ocean as you can get in North America!

I'll second that. I also use TurboCad and it really is not expensive. However, I am tinkering with Draftsight out of interest, but it is only 2D. TurboCad allows you to work in 3D as well.

There are a couple free programs, one is Draftsight which is 2D only; the other is a product called FreeCad.

I have used Draftsight before - if all you want to do is trace over the original and fair things up it's great drafting program for free.

FreeCad is something I just recently came across and I haven't tried it yet.

I just downloaded Draftsight and I am stuck at step one. I do not know how to load the jpeg or the pdf of the ships plan. I could do it with sketchup but  I guess :( there must be a variation in the command.

I just downloaded Draftsight.  Whenever you have a question, like this one, go to Help and type in your query.  In this case I simply typed in "insert jpg".  The answer was right there.  Go to Insert, click on Reference Image, locate the image, etc.  I just put a jpg in.  Again, all I did was use the Help page in the program.  Happy drawing!
