This will be my log for the Falmouth.

First some history.

1750  " Falmouth," East Indiaman, was commenced by Mr. Perry on
1752  the 22nd of August, 1750, and launched on the 14th of August, 1752,
a copy of one of the elaborate plans of this vessel now
hanging in the office at Blackwall is here given. In this year Mr. Perry's wife, Ann Perry,
died at the age of thirty-six.

Taken from "Chronicles of Blackwall Yard" by Henry Green and Robert Wigram 1881

It was the first trading vessel of the English Indiaman Companies and showed a close resemblance to a warship in sail plan and rigging, with the most up-to-date reef-points to her topsails The ship was equipped with a large amount of artillery, unusual for the trading vessels of that period. In that she was run along the lines of naval discipline was due to the fact that the vessel could sail alone without any convoy ship, since its rich load was a good bounty for all the enemy vessels and pirate ships.
The Falmouth could easily combat a war-ship of the same tonnage, thanks to its crew of 180 experienced men including the best trained gunners. The superiority of the crew was partly due to the incentive granted to each gunman allowing each individual to transport his own 5 tonnage of goods there and 2 tonnage back. These goods were usually sold as smuggled goods to the black market. The Falmouth was of 499 tons and was in service until 1764 completing five voyages for the East India Company under the Captain George Hepburn. She was lost on her sixth voyage, wrecked at Sogar Bank in 1766.

It only took ten days from the US to Norway by regular post, I was impressed.

Hi Nenseth, I recently stay at a hotel in Falmouth where they had a very large model of the Falmouth ship. If you would like to see them, I have some photos which were taken through the glass case, so there are some reflections.

I wish you well for your build and will follow it with interest.

Best wishes

I would love to see the pictues.

Maybe I´ll get some ideas for improvements  ;)

This will by the way be my first atemt at some scratch building later on.

Dont like the longboat that came premade in the kit, and I will try out some of Peter Coward´s construction tips from the Euromodel site.

Hello Hans.

The Falmouth is a nice ship and from what I read they produce good quality kits.

I do have a question... Why import into Norway from the US when you can get it direct from Euromodel . Much less postage and no inport duties.

I will be catching up on your build from time to time.

Regards Antony.

Some more dry fitting made today, and some beveling of the bulkheads started

Everything seams to be ok, no warped bulkhead or badly cut decks

One problem has arisen though...

The kit is missing the stringers

They are listed in the italian components list but not in the english. And they are not among the included materials

Hello Hans, fantastic that you are building this ship. I am currently working on this merchantman and will be following your efforts with great interest. There are never any problems with missing parts (rare that it is) being replaced.

Hans - there are updates for the Falmouth on the Euromodel website. I have put in a very thorough description of a major part of the stern build. Have a look at that update (FAL.INT.03.v3) as well as FAL.INT.01.v4. Good luck with yours.

Hans - just an early piece of advice. Much has been said in other logs about how difficult it is to bend the metal castings provided. My experience with a number of Euromodel ships and the long metal stern gallery-type windows is that they come pre-curved and IF your build in this area is correct, then they require very little, if any, further bending/ curving !  That is the simple truth of the matter. I have recently finished fitting (but not fixing) the myriad of metal pieces on the Falmouth stern and they all went together like clockwork and I just sat back in amazement. I knew the pieces were going to fit and so was open to making small adjustments to the shape of timbers surrounding them.

To achieve this, during the build I just kept measuring and re-measuring (and re-measuring) the various heights above the keel at the stern as well as taking into account the widths between decks. Not at all difficult but just time consuming. Plan Sheet 2 shows a longitudinal section from bow to stern but I had to keep reminding myself that this is for a scratch build so I had to take into account slight differences in deck thickness and various other nuances. It was just a matter of being totally in tune with the drawings.

I think it is helpful to know that the pieces will/ do fit.
