I have no clue,...but I would think serving the shrouds at the mast would be easier with less in the way. but thats a guess as I've never rigged a ship yet. Robbyn should know, or Garward for sure. It seems I read something in Andy's log (realworkingsailor) about rigging the lower masts before adding the uppers, but I could be remembering wrong.

I really like your cannon rigging, outstanding Job

Thanks guys ill look around the rigging thread and see if I can find the answer, if not ill post it

Eric, either way has advantages and drawbacks. Yes, it is a bit easier to leave masts unassembled, then you can do your stays and shroud lines, get them all "served" up and just hook them over the top of your lower mast pole...drawback, putting the rest of the mast together and keeping it all straight and alligned correctly when the bottom portion is immoveable. If you assemble the entire mast first it is easier to keep everything aligned and straight...drawback, tighter quarters for fat fingers when serving the shroud lines around the top of the lower mast. Either way works.

Thanks guys, with your feedback I decided to build as I go. My fat fingers helped make that decision. Masts got glued in place tonight so ill have some picks up once my first st of shrouds are done. So far the hardest part is making up my mind on how to do something

Installed shrouds and deadeyes on the aft part of the ship. Mixed feelings about them. No twist but not exactly even. Next set will see if I can get them level? post-1401-0-16561500-1368805857_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-21462800-1368805916_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-36743700-1368805953_thumb.jpg

Looks pretty darn good to me, I am beginning to believe we are never happy with the way our own look. Not a bad thing, just makes us strive harder on the next one. So how come you didn't get any twist, I have been fighting that with every one.

Eric,

Excellent work so far.  The shrouds and deadeyes look great!  I still think your San Fran cannons are the best in the business.  Did you make the extra blocks and eye bolts yourself and did you use some template/book for the layout of all the extras?  Now that I have seen your cannons I will never be satisfied with the standard San Fran cannon assembly.  Between yourself and Randy you guys keep on making extra work for me  :D

So working on the rat lines, what a marathon this is. I nearly lost my mind on the first set but after a few beers I found my groove. A few things I have done:

#1 the line supplied with the kit sucks, and I dont mean just a little....allot. So I replaced it with line I ordered from Nature Coast (I think its Jotika ? line) and I have an order in with morope to finish the other parts. I refuse to use the supplied line.

#2 I used a curved sewing needle (thanks Robbin) to attack the knots (I used granny knots)

#3 I dyed my lines using Kiwi leather dye.

No doubt about the line Eric. I was headed for a rubber room when trying to attach those deadeyes from the shroud to the ones that sit on the channel shelf. I ordered morope and even ripped out the shrouds that were done on the main mast. Lesson #1... start with better thread. I'm circling and waiting.... morope could arrive tomorrow or 2 weeks.... sigh...

You're getting there tho and it looks good.

Eric, looks good, and smart move on the line. I have decided to tear all my rigging out and start over, I am just not happy with what was supplied in the kit.

RATLINES half way done! Man are these a test of mans patience. Starting to take a serious look at the rigging. Again the instructions/plans are useless. They show blocks that don't connect into anything ? Did get some blocks and line from Chuck P. man does he sell some good stuff. Replaced my anchor rope with Syren line. I would have rigged this ship with his product but no turning back now. My rattlesnake will benifit from it though. In hindsight I wish I had fully assembled my masts with rigging then installed them. Saw so many builds do this but though this was easier. Again I need to learn from others... Not enough time to make all the mistakes on my own. Anyway feel like I coming into the home stretch and its a long stretch.

Can I get some feedback one these. Not too sure what to call em but where the lower ratlines and the upper deadeyes attach. I made one set with the ratlines and the other without. Is this accurate ? I thought if I was climbing those I would want the ladder all the way up, but then I thought about it and I don't think I've seen these on anyone else's ships ? Ladder or no ladder ?

I don't know which is 'accurate' but I know which one I like... with ratlines looks crisper and right. I agree... a climber is going to need the transition to get into the crows nest. Looks good :)

My ratlines begin whenever I stop procrastinating ;)

I echo what Randy said, ratlines look better, but don't know what is accurate. Remember, your build so do what you like!

Thanks guys, I actually found my answer while working on my rattlesnake the ratlines connect to the crows nest in this fashion but it may be a more modern rigging technique just like foot ropes.

Thanks marinid, I hope you post a log so we are can help one another.

Working on attaching blocks and the upper ratlines. Stuck with the same method I used for the lower but smaller version. Tried attaching blocks using wire..... Didn't go so well. So ended up using thread which at times is easy but making the eyes to attach rope was a little more challenging. The pre drilled holed for the upper deadeyes payed off and I would recommend this for other builders.

Upper rat lines started! should be a week more of knot after knot.... Some of my yard arms are ready to instal. I feel so close to the end but so far lots more to do. If the plans were clearer I could have saved countless hours. With this kit you have to look at every picture and plan. So many blocks are omitted in the plans and are shown in the pictures. I'm still confused as to the rigging that attaches to the blocks/attachment thingy at the junctions of the masts (I know great description maybe ill take a pic to get some help). Anyways talk to u guys later
