I love the quote about research. Some times I have to remind myself I'm building a AL kit and the authenticity, scale, parts are not the best. Must adapt and overcome. Thank you for the encouragement and I hope to repay you guys.

Hello Eric.

Nice SF Build.

... on the stairs cannon issue, maybe its me but the stairs look thick. comparing the size of the stairs to the cannon it looks like if they were thinner (standing not so far out) they would give room for the double block, or at least more room.

She's looking good, but she may need those cannons if that rattlesnake advances on her stern much closer.

Also on the guns I saw this posted about the SF and the Armanda of 1588, it seems they used field guns in the beinging and cast iron cannon. heres the link

Of course as stated, this is an AL kit. One day I plan on a SF build and I want to bash the AL right out of her. Keep up the good work, shes a beaut'

Thanks kieth its amazing that something so obvious could be so overlooked. Great article for any San Fran builder. I don't know if it could even possibly be the same vessel but when I was in key west the past January I went to a shipwreck museum. Listed as a wrecked prize ship was the galleon San Francisco. Being new to sailing ship history I though that must be it. Got some great pics of the area at leastpost-1401-0-15428400-1364622174_thumb.jpg

Eric, I need some help. I need to bend my limber strips laterally to follow the curve of the bulwark and hull. I just keep breaking them. How did you get yours to bend?

So the starboard guns are now installed. Then again maybe it's the port side ah hell the guns are in on the left side. The snake is definatly getting more attention right now but I am still putting tackle on the blocks and finishing up my life boat and oars. Is it me or are my oars a little too long? post-1401-0-77601100-1366081522_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-35051200-1366085071_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-05364800-1366085299_thumb.jpg

It's good to see you back as well. Looks like you're about ready for masts eh? Your SF is really looking sharp! :)

The oars do look long but not out of proportion. Think about the 16 or 20 sailors crammed in there and the length works. To me at least.

Hello, I'm new here. I had the original San Fran from AL a long time ago. Got almost all of the planking done and never worked on it anymore. Long story short, the boat is trashed. I still have the kit with a lot of the remaining pieces. Was wondering if anyone knows if the two kits would be compatible? If I was to get the San Fran 2, would some of the rigging, dead eye's  cannons and all be useful from the old kit? I think it would be neat to start fresh with a new kit and have the option to experiment a Little with some added extra furnishings, cannons and what not. Anyone know?

Spellapeaka,

The SF1 kit is a double planked hull, where the SF2 is single planked.  You would be able to choose which approach you wanted as many of us have the SF2 and are double planking it.  The bulwarks in the SF1 extended out past the bow whereas the SF2 has smaller bulwarks with detached beaks that extend out past the bow.  Since both kits have fake closed gunports, you really wouldn't be able to add any of the cannons from the first kit into the second.  You could install gun blocks in your hull and get some screw in cannons which is what I wish I would of done.  It would be hard to add cannons to the main deck because there isn't a lot of open room but you might be able too.  Most of the other parts would just be redundant I think but hopefully others will chime in.

Thank you for the response. I am currently getting back into the hobby with a Harvey Baltimore clipper that I started and stopped a few months ago(build log coming soon). After the Harvey I know I am going to want to do something with some more rigging and square sails. Might have to jump into the San Fran II and revisit an old friend :).  Any one here have some thoughts on the quality of the San Fran II kit? I have only worked on kits from AL. The San Fran I kit was really well laid out with really nicely detailed parts and everything. I was a little disappointed in the Harvey though as it appears some of the pieces are pre-built and will require me to remake them from scratch. Your thoughts please.

I am not too thrilled with my AL kit. I have since bought two kits by modelshipways (rattlesnake&constitution). The scale and detail in these kits make the San Fran kit look ridiculas. Although I'm not supper disappointed in the Fran, I don't see myself buying another forgen kit unless its British made. Maybe post what you have with your San Fran I and get some help from the Comunity and buy a different kit and start fresh with your new found experience and friends here at MSW.

I agree with eric, the AL kits are generally mediocre and they cost around the same as a model shipways kit of the same size.  The SF is a good looking boat though, that is what convinced me to buy it.  The instructions are inadequate and some of the parts need to be remade, but if you decide to do it you will get enough help on this site to get it built.

So all guns finally installed. Don't know why but the was mentally challenging. I can only imagin how long it would take to do the guns on a 1st rate ship. So I have some finishing touches to do on the deck furniture and life boat. I have all my masts shaped and its onto pure rigging, that is if the rattlesnake doesn't distract me again. post-1401-0-28500500-1367208191_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-02493500-1367208139_thumb.jpg

So starting the marathon that is rigging. Crows nests glued in place using expoxy. All of the upper parts of the masts are shapped but wont be glued in place until the lower rigging is fitted and served. i hope this approach is right. Started with the ratlines? Also drilled holes in the crows nests to hopefully make the upper ratlines easier to manage (I hope). Masts won't be glued in place until I have the mainstays served and in place and any other rigging that can be done. Also need to try one of the many jigs that have been posted to attach the deadeyes. So far rigging is proving to be an art all it's own. post-1401-0-03243900-1367781371_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-67504000-1367781425_thumb.jpg

Looking good, I like that you took the time to rig your guns and add the coils of rope and cannonballs. I would have liked to, but don't have the supplies, and don't want to spend the money.

My main goal was to get some experience for my rattlesnake and constitution. My gun rigging is fictitious, I had originally planned on sing and a double block rig but there was not enough room so I went with what you see now. How's the Syren doing?

The Connie is a MS. Its really hard looking at that box and not touching it. I am using the san fran and the snake as stepping stones for the Connie build. When I look at the rigging for the connie I feel like throwing up, but hopefuly by the time I get there I'll be ready.

P.S. I am a huge fan on MS, and wil probably only pruchase their kits. Next purchases would be Syren, Prince, and Essex. That is unless I bump my head and go scratch.

I agree in the MS kits. I rellay like their Conny kit, but your right about the rigging. Just keep telling your self...1 step at a time.

How'd that old christmas cartoon go -  put one foot in front of the other, and soon you'll be running conny rigging....

...or something like that.

I don't know what is the right or better way but I am sort of right behind you and I just assumed I would assemble the masts completely. Like I said, no clue if that is better. I don't see an advantage or downside either way... so... unless more experience says otherwise I'll go complete...
