Planking question

Hello all,

 

I am building my first "planked" model, Midwests Whitehall tender and have a question about the process. After looking at some build logs, reading some tutorials and making a first attempt,I'm stumped.  As I'm sure you are aware the model is planked on a form upside down.  When I start the sheer plank I am left with quite a curve.  An upside down "U" if you will.  How do I keep that from getting even more pronounced as the planking is added.  I feel like I need to taper the middle of the plank not the ends.

Hi Warren,

 

Trust the instructions.  Do tick marks down the hull in the middle of the hull (or thereabouts) with each mark being the width of the plank,  Count the marks, as that is how many planks you need.  Now measure the hull fore and aft and divide the measurements by the number of planks.  You'll see that the planks will need tapering even with the sheer.  Make sure that the measuring and tick marks are on the wood itself and not by using a ruler or T-square standing proud next to the model.

To plank a hull properly, some planks will have C- or even S- shapes. Look at the planking tutorials on this site.
