  1. Mayflower scale...... Using Chucks plan sheets, for some reason, I have been thinking all along that I was working on a scale of 1:64.... Having built at that scale before, something just didn't seem right, so I did a simple calculation using the stated width of the Mayflower's deck being 26 feet. Measuring the width of the deck on my plan sheet, I get 3-3/8"......or 3.375 converted to decimals. Now, tell me if I am wrong here.... 26 feet equals 312 inches....... 312 inches divided by 3.375 inches gives me a scale of 1:92 Am I correct?
  2. At this point, still working on launching a new build log for my Mayflower. Just figured out that the old Ship Modeler's Forum is still up and running. Until now, I thought it was the old same group with a new system.....confused here. So the question is.....Are the members the same?..... or Is this an entirely different organization?
  3. Take a look at Llhan Gokcay's Build log.....I just don't like to paint over beautiful wood. And I love his detail....should be a nice challenge. Please excuse me while I experiment with posting photo's from my iPad. I still haven't figured out how to add pic's to my personal gallery. Takes us old folks a little while to figure things out.
  4. Mark....I will indeed. Figured I would get it past the "boiling water" stage before I begin posting the more interesting stuff. To me, this stage is much like watching grass grow. Just placed the last plank on the hull to complete my first planking.....ordered a beautiful piece of Mayan Walnut which I will be using for her skin. Can't wait to take it to my sawmill and begin creating her skin planks. Thanks
  5. Decided to build The Mayflower. Using Chuck's plan sheets (thank's Chuck). First planking of the hull completed. I am leaning toward Ilhan Gokcay's version.....enjoying his wonderful build log.
  6. The hull is coming along well at this point. Will finish the rough planking tomorrow and begin planking the decks. Should soon be at a point of posting a few pics.

Mayflower #1 (1:76th scale) - Masts fitted with all shrouds and rat lines....standing rigging completed.

Mayflower #2 (1:60th scale) - Decks planked....hull first planking completed....beginning second planking of the hull with bamboo planks created from a serving tray purchased from Walmart. Very pleased with results thus far.

  7. Jack....I really appreciate your comprehensive building log as I am beginning a scratch build with only the plan sheets....no instructions manual. All of your posts have been most helpful. I am looking forward to the opportunity to build Chuck's Mayflower along with you. Your work is very nice. Thanks.
  8. Very interesting chat.....Allow me to clear up from my end. I was allowed to build my Confederacy along with Chuck, as he developed the kit. Since all of my ships were built for my grand kids to enjoy long after I am gone, they all followed my building logs very carefully from over a thousand miles away. When I tried to explain that this beautiful ship would not have masts like all the others, it just didn't go over very well. So I told Chuck I would have to rig her best I could....fully understanding that some of the belaying would our best guess. Turned out to be their favorite ship....creating another problem between two of the boys (both want to claim rights to it). So now I am considering another build..... Chuck's Winchelsea would be my choice but it isn't ready for prime time. As for "USS".... Thanks for the info.
  9. Just running across this discussion on my Confederacy. Been so long ago now..... I really appreciate the kind comments. Be assured, I do not consider myself a serious historian of this wonderful art....just an old guy who fell in love with it and really enjoys the challenge.
