SawdustDave got a reaction from Elmer Cornish in Mayflower by SawdustDave - Finished
This is exactly what I was afraid of. The 5/32 scale (1:77) simply will not allow me the detail I feel like I should be looking at.
Just finished installing the shrouds to the fore mast top..... used 3.5mm dead eyes and the scale doesn't work to my eye.
Been wrestling with this from the beginning....now, as much as I hate it, I know what I must do.

Adding railing stanchions. Getting each the exact same height being the promary challenge here.

Okay. That sounds like a better idea.

Dave:
Is it that the deadeyes are a bit crowded? Maybe stepping down to a smaller diameter deadeye will do the trick. Otherwise it looks very neatly done.

Dave:
A total restart? Wow. I do not see anything that tells me you should scrap the model. You can make the heart shaped deadeyes. With a little thought and practice, it would come together. Please do not make any hasty decisions. It is a great looking model so far. Consider staying with it.

Now working on top mast shrouds using 3.5mm dead eyes....
Thought I might share this handy seizing jig for anyone interested.
Took me about 15 minutes to create this simple jig, using two wire stubs to secure the tiny deadeye on one upright and the second upright with a map pin used as belaying point to secure the two ends of the shroud nice and taunt whilst being perfectly seized.

She now has her masts....although they are merely sitting loosely in place at this point.

Tops....
Over 100 pieces per top....These are, by far, the most difficult tops I've ever tried to build.

More deck trim.... Note water pump....just because I enjoy building them (builders prerogative)

At this scale, wasn't sure how I was going to tackle the tiny ships bell. Not crazy about painting a wood bell.
Came up with this....turned a small brass "phillips head" wood screw using two Dremel tools spinning against each other.
Not too awful bad....I'll take it.
No, there is no "clapper" inside the bell.

Several milestones in every build are worthy of small celebrations. The final hull plank is one of those "Miller Time" moments.

SawdustDave reacted to Pete Jaquith in Newsboy 1854 by Pete Jaquith - Model Shipways - Brigantine
Thank you for your interest in "Newsboy" 1854,
Next step is fitting the jibboom and associated head rigging. Key points include:
>>> Deadeye assemblies prepared with silver soldered rings
>>> Deadeye assemblies fitted to bow
>>> Jibboom / dolphin striker outfitted with eyebands
>>> Jibboom / dolphan striker fitted and head rigging installed
>>> Martingale stays and backstays fabricated from 27 links/in brass chain
>>> Balance of head rigging installation consists of tieing off the fore stays that pass down through the bowsprit bees and jibboom sheeves (following foremast installation)

SawdustDave got a reaction from Ilhan Gokcay in Mayflower by SawdustDave - Finished
Not exactly sure how to reply since I am actually using two sets of plans. Began with plan sheets provided by our friend Mr. Passaro....also using a set of plan sheets provided by my friend Ilhan Gokcay. Mr. Gokcay's build log, posted herein, has been my primary resource for detail. He tells me in an email that he used Anderson's book as a reference for rigging detail.
Note: I cannot claim to be a maritime historian, although I do appreciate those of you who are. I'm just an old woodworker who kinda fell into this amazing hobby a few years ago and fell in love with the art.

SawdustDave got a reaction from PeterK in Young America 1853 by EdT - FINISHED - extreme clipper
Two hours reading your build log this morning Ed....could not put it down. Will go back and read most of it a second time.
The GOOD....I learned more just reading these postings than I could expressing mere words, so I will not try.
The BAD....After nine scratch projects, and a couple of minor recognition awards from my Carolina peers, a lot of very nice friends had almost convinced me that I had become a "fair" artist/craftsman. That feeling now being replaced with the humbling urge to take a torch to all of my ships and begin with a new appreciation for extreme detail and accuracy.
The UGLY....Fact that I am now 71 years old and simply no longer have the physical / mental abilities achieve such levels of perfection. (I would say the same to jack Nicholas with regard to my golf game)
HOWEVER.....Your excellent work has inspired me, and so many others standing in awe, to be a little better.
Thank you sir.

Hi Popeyes:
Thoroughly enjoyed spending the last hour following this build. As always, I picked up a number of great tips.
She really looks great!

thank you for the 'likes' gentlemen......I apologize for not getting the progress up sooner. I had this done yesterday, but my first mate had to go to the vet for his check up. he did very well
anyway.........to set the stage for the fore deck planking, a 1/16 border was lined along the edges for the stanchions. a 'tip' was also added the the bow stem......repeated sanding rounded the edges a little, and this was done to change the look.
I think I should have extended this along the cabin bulkhead, but with the companionway and stairs, I figured that I had better not. a border plank was laid spanning across, and the deck planking will meet it.
as this was done......I got the feeling that I may be wrong in my assumption of the plank color. I need to remember that the main deck was done some time ago.......it has had plenty of time to cure.
I did a bit of sanding once the starboard side was done........just me being impatient with how it will look.
all sanded and ready for clear coat. I used a semi gloss lacquer for the main deck, and so I will here as well. caution.........the colors will be way off, but I think as it cures, it will dull down.
the roof of the companionway has been painted. here it is with two coats applied.
