geoff reacted to Denny's shipyard in Hello to all
Hi to all,
My name is Peter, my username is taken from a shipyard on the River Clyde at Dumbarton, Scotland where my grandfather and uncles worked for years. Denny Brothers closed in the 1960's unfortunately, after 160+ years of cutting edge shipbuilding. The yard is best known for completing the Cutty Sark after the original builders, Scott and Linton, went broke.
Model building was a very big part of my early teen years, mostly plastic of every variety but carved boats and balsa strip aeroplanes also, so now many many years later I'm going to revisit it to give my aging brain and fingers a challenge. My only previous experience with plank on frame models was a kit of the Wasa from many years ago, this was pre laser cutting and the kit was just too labour intensive for that stage of my life.
I'm starting off with the AL Virginia Schooner which I've been researching here while waiting for the kit to arrive. Some of the reviews and logs seem a bit negative towards AL kits in general but at first glance I'm very happy with the quality of this kit. Everything is straight, the planking and deck strips are well cut with no jagged edges and the written and photo instructions seem quite well done. Perhaps AL realized that they had quality control issues and stepped up their game.
Anyway I just wanted to say hi and complement the site admins and all the builders, lots of beautiful work here.

Hello to all. I joined back in May but have been so busy with work that my introduction is now coming. I have built a lot of plastic models in the past and decided to try my hand at wooden ships. I find them fascinating. I live in Hollywood, Florida and recently purchased the 18th century Armed Longboat by Model Shipways. I hope to be starting a build log here soon and I will need all the help I can get.

Thanks, Mark. Down Under? We were headed for Melbourne when I metamorphosed from pollywog to Shellback. Great two weeks there.
My health issue (might as well say it, cancer) is dormant for a while. A few years hopefully and my modeling desire has resurfaced.
Best,
Michael

I joined a few years back after getting a Caldercraft HM Sherbourne. Yes, I am a shellback, US Navy 1963, crossed the line at the dateline on USS Buchanan DDG-14, so I’m officially a Golden Shellback.
Since my initial posts I’ve had some health challenges and the Sherbourne is still in her box. But, I am modeling again. I have a Fujimi 1:700 Mushashi ready to start then I figure it is time to stop procrastinating and begin my first plank and frame model.
I’m sure I will have many questions.
Best regards to all,
Michael Scott

That is a truly spectacular illustration! It looks like someone in a time machine went back in time with some advanced photo equipment and took the picture at just the right moment as a witness to the actual battle. An illustration like this can really bring history to life.

Bilge Rat is job. Mark is name.
We all are at first self-conscious about that. But the advanced builders here are very willing to help and offer advice. And I agree that a build log does keep you on track.
I'll see your "Oh look.... shiny" and raise you "Oh look.. a shiny new quarter." I have the same problem.

Thank you guys for the warm welcome.
Bilge Rat, I will consider starting a build log. I am just a little self conscious about putting all my mistakes out there for the world to see...lol. However, on the flip side it might help to keep me on track. I can become side tracked pretty easily. Oh look..... shiny!!

I wanted to take a moment to say hello to everybody.
Let me start by saying that the skill that you all have is incredible.
I am not new to modeling in general. However, I have never done anything similar to this. I just received the MS 18th Century Armed Longboat. I thought that would be a good model to "cut my teeth" on. I have already begun by transferring the bearding line and cutting in the rabbet. I am sure that I will have many questions as I progress. I only hope that I can turn out something that is a quarter as good as what I have seen on this site.
I feel that this is perhaps the best site that I have found and I am glad to become a new member.
Aaron
