Landlubber Mike got a reaction from Haliburton in IJN Akitsushima by Landlubber Mike - Pit Road - 1/700 - PLASTIC
To simulate the hull plating lines, I taped alternating rows using Tamiya flexible tape and then sprayed a fairly medium-heavy coat of Mr. Surfacer 500. Once you remove the tape, you have nice simulated plating lines.
I then added the degaussing cables. The Artist Hobby set gives you four pieces for each side of the hull, and then a piece for the stern. The pieces all fit together perfectly. I've been super impressed by the Artist Hobby update set. Everything fits the Pit Road kit like a glove.

Completion
After eight months of fairly concentrated work this project is now complete.
This has been an interesting kit to make and one that has taken more time than I had initially imagined.
I had a lot of questions in my mind about certain details and fittings etc; for which there is scant information, and which remain unanswered.
Even so, Chris has done an excellent job of creating ‘Harpy’ which makes up into a very attractive model with lots of deck interest.
A fine addition to the Vanguard range of kits.
The completion Photos (part 1)
These are the full hull shots that will feature in my usual build Photo book.

The display stand has been completed, I do like keel blocks as part of the support, a design that has featured in several of my models.

Landlubber Mike got a reaction from Canute in HMS Eskimo by king derelict - FINISHED - Trumpeter - 1/700 - PLASTIC
Wow, that was fast! Looks great! Love the trio!

Landlubber Mike reacted to drobinson02199 in Brannaren by drobinson02199 - Caldercraft - Scale 1:48
Finished the piping. As I noted above, I didn't follow the instructions and instead built it in sections, dry-fitting as I went along, and I woiuld strongly recommend that approach. The long sections are made of steel rod that is copper-colored, so I used silver metallic paint.
The part where one pipe passes under the other takes some trial and error dry-fitting to get right.

David

Thank you very much Mike. Turned out to be a good exercise in looking beyond the information provided by the kit maker

And suddenly Eskimo seems finished. I added the railings and boats, gave the superstructure a very thin black oil wash and then added the rust streaks to the anchors and portholes.
And as promised here are a trio of Tribals
HMS Zulu at left, HMS Eskimo centre and HMCS Huron at right as viewed.
There are doubtless inaccuracies given the nature of the Trumpeter kits and photos only supply so much detail. I’ve read that corvette captains grabbed any secondary weapons going and the same for the Carley rafts so once in commission there really isn’t a standard configuration. I suspect that the same may be true for destroyers, so this is my interpretation at the end of the day.
Thank you all for following along and for the likes and kind comments.
Now, the question is, what’s next? A diorama is tempting and the miniatures are calling too

Looks like another great one! Looking forward to following along Alan - you do great work!
By the way, love the Black Cat aftermarket you are using. I've picked up a few of their items for future projects myself.

Progressing along the groove made by Zulu but changing the order of building around to reflect lessons learnt (or maybe not) from the earlier two builds.
I made up the brass tripod foremast and installed it earlier this time. It was much easier to position but now I realize it’s going to interesting to place the forward funnel. Hopefully I can do it without banging the mast. Boats and Carley rafts are in progress now.
i need to straighten the main mast which got touched while I was fiddling with the foremast. You can’t win sometimes.
I was trying to work up the enthusiasm to attempt the PE quad 50 cals when the post lady brought a small box from France. A handful of Black Cat resin accessories including quad 50 cals. Amazingly tiny, they suggest the PE ones are over scale. The resin is quite flexible so cutting the guns off the supports was not too hair raising just tiny.
They have been painted and added and look very nice- if you have good eyesight or magnifiers.
Still a bit to do but it’s coming together. I’ll add the funnels and give the ship a black oil wash before starting the railings.
Thanks for looking in, the likes and comments.

This the last of the three Trumpeter Tribal Class destroyers, HMS Eskimo
. Inside the box everything is exactly the same as HMS Zulu. I don’t like the box art paint scheme and it doesn’t seem correct for 1941 so I’m backing my RN WW2 camouflage book instead.
Besides I really like the “ghost” scheme of Western Approaches Blue and White. The drawing also confirms the number and location of the ships boats and most of the armament. It does show Oerlikons on the bridge wings. I am not sure if they were really there or whether the artist used a generic Tribal to color the camouflage.
hull has been primed, masked and painted with the AK acrylic RN colors. The WA blue seems a bit green in the photos but really is a very light blue in reality.
The basic building blocks of the superstructure have been added and noi think this is where I start the PE details.
Thanks for looking in.

What I like to do is run a thin needle with CA to add a good amount to hidden areas - interiors, etc. Seems to work very well. I’ve also done the same with two part epoxy. I’m surprised you can solder such thin pieces of brass without destroying them - very impressive!
At some point I’ll have to learn to solder so that I can build up the GLS corvette class aftermarket.
