After reviewing a number of build logs here on MSW, I decided to assemble the middle rail a little differently than how it was shown in the instructions.  Instead of starting with the number ‘1’ piece of the middle rail I decided to temporarily set the number ‘2’ piece in position.  To hold the piece in place I drilled a small hole through the lower part of the rail and into the hull, similar to what I did for the upper rail, so I could insert an eye bolt into it.  The upper portion was held by the notch in the cap rail and sheer plank.

Now with piece 2 in place I was better able to position the number 1 piece.   After piece 1 was tapered and shorten to fit between the cheeks and piece 2, I thought the only way I would get a smooth transition between the two pieces would be to glue them together, before they were glued on the ship.  So with piece 2 just pinned in position I carefully glued piece 1 to it with a drop of CA glue, holding it in position until it set.   I used an abrasive buff on my dremel to sand the pieces down to their final shape being careful not to exert too much pressure near the seam.

                                                                                                  Before                                                           After

The last thing I did before gluing the piece to the ship was to carve the groove and to stain it.  The piece was then glued on the ship and like the upper rail I used a shorter pin in place of the eye bolt to help secure it to the hull.  I worked on both the port and starboard rails at the same time which helped to make sure they were symmetrical about the knee.

In retrospect I’m glad I glued the two pieces together because I was able to get a nice transition between the two parts.  The only thing I don’t like is where the two pieces are joined together.  I think by using CA glue it didn’t stain well so you can see the seam between the two pieces.   Now I need to work on the hanging knee (piece 3).

As some (or all) of you may have gathered by now, I'm quite easily distracted by "shiny things".  My most recent distraction was that I finally decided that I needed to finish my work room, which required quite a bit of re-working.

First I removed the temporary hanging lights I had rigged, and spent far more time working over my head than I have done in a very long time, which reminded me that working on overhead stuff truly sucks.  I used Wiremold to tap two circuits out of my overhead light fixture (was wired for a ceiling fan that was never installed in this room).  I then hung 3 awesome LED light fixtures from Costco (3700 lumens each @ 4000K, for only a 30 watt draw), these are all wired to the same circuit.

    So much light, it's awesome.
Next up, launched into a furniture assembling marathon, and replaced my two 20" deep, very crowded work benches with 3 x 30" x 60" surfaces, allowing me to move both existing work benches to the back side of the room and dedicate them to my ever-growing collection of power tools.  Thanks to Frank for pointing me at Ikea for these fantastic table-tops and shelf units.

I still have to mount two more of these LED fixtures, which will be on the other circuit so they are separately switched over the two work benches, but that will come later.  I've got a ton of work now just to get organized into the new area, since everything has to be relocated to the new drawer units under the new work area.

Hopefully my next update will have actual ship progress again, now that I'm pretty much done with the room layout (and there is no room left for any other additions).

It reminds me of when the discussions went around about aging sails on the Launches. I was ready to tie one on my bumper!

    Fish Davit

The Fish Davit is used when pulling up the Anchor. The associated tackle literally is used to "fish" the anchor around the flukes and then haul the crown end up ready for stowing.

The davit is tapered by 3 scale inches on all four sides. A stop is cut into each end :

A handrope is fitted to enable the davit to be manhandled into position. Nine eyestrops hold the two ropes together by passing through the centre of the davit. These were a whole lot of fun to fit, as they have an eye in one end and the other end doubles back into the hole. A drop of PVA glue holds the doubled end in place :
