Been awhile since I've was last here but the ship was just completed. Missed a few things I should have done and took a few liberties along the way. Over all very satisfied with the way it turned out so here are some pics of the ship. Pardon the fancy back drop.

    Hello
Like always my progress is slow  . I took a little brake from ship modelling, but now that I have vacations I hope to get something done. I have continued to work on the stern for the past two days. I had problems bending the stern, because of its thickness and because of the plywood on which I glued the wood strips on.

So I took away the windows and `sanded away` the plywood. This worked fairly well, but it led to a problem. Now that the wood strips are only glued to each other, the structure is less stable. I hope that it won`t lead to a bigger problem.

I have changed my mind about the cabin - I will not do the inside. This is only my first build and I don`t feel that I could do something nice with the inside of the cabin. So I just put the floor and that's it. I hope that in my next build I will be able to do more with the cabin.

I have also added the windows on the side galleries.

As always any advice is welcome

Yes Jan-Willem, the disc sander is very helpful. I was able to get the right angles and it is quite precise. It can also sand lots of material if needed, but the dust it makes cannot be missed  . But I guess that a small disc-sander is nothing compared to one that is almost 1 meter big  .

So I am back, I couldnt do much as I had visit and its the end of the schoolyear, where there are many exams =/. Anyway I had the ocasion of cleaning y workspace, so here is a photo of it. (Not really the most apropriate place, but it does just fine for me)

But now to the actuall build. In the last post I told about the problem of the kit. I was looking a little at some buildlogs and I was quite impressed by the decoration of the inside cabin, So I told myself that I would try it too. So I went on and placed the brass stern, note that normally there would be a wood piece behind the brass, but I just wanted to see if the windows are in the right posision. To my surprise the windows are way too high, first I thought I had done an error, so I looked at the plans, but everything seems right, I really can`t understand why occre would do such an error.

So I guess I will try too scratch build the stern. I noticed that The roof of the cabin is a little low (around 1.5m or 4.9 feet for those who prefer it). So I shall do some modifications.

Finally I got two books about model ship building and a little hand drill.

Hi there, I have gotten this Kit for my 16th birthday back in January. If someone would question me why I wished to have a model ship or how I came on the idea of model shipbuilding, I could not answer it. One morning I just woke up with it in my mind. It might have been a model that I have seen once, or some photos on the internet that gave me the Idea.

Anyway I chose this kit because it was in a good price range and it was the only one with 2 mortars in the front. Once it had been ordered I searched eagerly on the web for more pictures of the finished ship. (a little late maybe    ) Unfortunately there were only a few pictures and I only found two build logs (one in Russian and one in Portuguese). I might have taken another ship if I had known this before ordering it. I was wondering what other ship were available and this is how I stumbled on this site. Only after reading through build logs did I come on the Idea of modifying the kit. I never thought to improve it  , but now that I have a log I will try to do modifications .
This log may not be worthy of this site, but I hope to get excused because it is the only build log of this ship here.

Well, unfortunately I haven't been able to do anything really since New Year.  There are some other priorities in my life which in itself are very good but make it quite impossible to work on my Bluenose from time to time.
I am working on some of the things which are going to be placed on the deck in order for me to be able to cut out the shapes from the deck.
Very very slowly I am trying to restart with the fish hatches now. I hope to write a new log entry soon.

    Keep up the good work!

    Hi Jean-Luc,

I have made a first test with Nerofor, which arrived yesterday.
I set it up quite quickly, just to test it out, so I did was not very meticulous about cleaning and sanding (steel wool) the metal.
In the past days I bent a little piece of 0.4 mm brass wire into 2 ringbolts (they are still attached in the middle so it still is one piece).
I brushed some Robla on it (which smells like acetone, so it probably is a comparable product) and then repeatedly brushed a tiny bit of Nerofor on it. After a few minutes it got a nice dark tan. Not exactly deep matt black, but a very dark blackish brown, looking very old.
I rinsed with water and it still looks the same. Let's see if it stays the same over the period of a few days
I will be trying some more in the near future. For me, the result looks promising though.

    Here' s a picture:

    Hi Jean-Luc,

After searching for blackening fluid (which is available in Europe) for quite some time I have just ordered some blackening fluid (schwarzbeize) from Germany.
After reading several logs on products like Blacken-It and others I got kind of sceptical about the whole procedure. Then, after some searching I found a German product called Nerofor, made by Ballistol. Ballistol makes a lot of products for the weapons industry, including degreaser (Robla), blackening fluid for colored metals (Nerofor), blueing fluid for iron/steel and gun oils, plus a lot more.
There are several instructions, comments and movies in the internet which testify that the product works very well. See for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JfVvCYGubw
Also, it seems to be very easy to use as compared to other products: apply the product with a brush and then rinse with water. First the object has to be clean of course which can be done with the degreaser. Afterwards you can rub the object with a bit of oil.
As soon as I get my products I will try it out and let you know the result. Hopefully this weekend.

    Spritsail Yard
I decided the next job would be to fit and rig the spritsail yard, this has now been completed with photos below. My next job will be to add the fore ,main and mizzen braces, again leaving the gaffs and the the tac sheets for access, also at some point soon I will make up the ships boats, most likely after the braces.

Cheerio my friends and fellow modelers

To my shame I must admit that I am a complete failure...

After completing the Royal Caroline I wanted to take a break for about two months. Time to relax, to clean up the shipyard, to go to cinema or something like this. And then, after this over and over boring time I wanted to return to my desk and start a new project - the Endeavour by Occre.

But I did some essential mistakes... First: I opend the box of the kit (which I bought some weeks ago as there was a special offer at my dealer); second: I opend the box; third: I opend the box. In the box there was so much material which I only wanted to control... If everything is ok, no damage etc. And there were the plans... I HAD to compare the drawings with the AOTS Endeavour as all of you will understand. I HAD to see how well-designed the kit is, how much of the Details will be featured and so on...

Now I know that the kit seems to be well equipped with all needed timber, fittings, sails. And it came as it has to come... I just started to look at the parts for the keel, I just looked if the bulkheads are well laser-cut. In a very curios manner the parts came out of the plywood Sheets almost from alone... Should I let them be alone there on the desk? Wasn't it my duty to help them into a correct shape? To look if they fit together?

I think you know the rest... :D

Nevertheless I will know start the Endeavour although the Admiral was talking about craziness and all that nonsense

The first impression of the kit after a Close-up:

The plans seem to be very good. The rigging plans are full detailled, there is an overview from the top and from the side, there are detail-plans for the masts and yards with obviousley accurate drawings. The plans are very close to the AOTS by Mr Marquardt so that I think there will not be a great need for bashing.  Perhaps I will get some other timber for the second planking. The provided lime wood is very cute for the decks and after sealing it with some semigloss varnish it shimmers very warm and smooth. According to the plans the hull should be colored in some kind of yellow which I will surely not do. I think about some oak tree or even teak (perhaps just staining the lime in a somehow teak color).

I am not sure if I use the provided yarn, I will do a test before the rigging starts. The yarn seems to be some kind of raw material... The plywood is very thin only 4 mm, should be thicker (at least 5 or 6mm) but I can't change. To gain more stability to the frame I used some wooden blocks to fasten the bulkheads on the keel, I also broaded the stands for the masts. They are originally glued only onto the 4mm keel. I think this is not stable enough.

I noticed that the parts are cut extreme accurate. There is almost no need to sand anything (yet) - but we will see. I will use the sails with this model - my first time. I am not sure how this will work... but I think there will be the one or the other to help me

Well, that's it for the moment. The next weeks and months will be fulfilled with the Endeavour and - also very important to me - with the history of this ship, his Captain and dicoverer James Cook, with the journeys around the world and all the adventures and enormous knowledge that was collected in that time.

Hi Schnu - sorry for the delay...

The dust is kept out by a big hood... It is 90/75/28 cm big and from acrylic glass, made by a German Company called Sora (http://www.sora-shop.de). It is worth every Cent (the costs are about 165 Euro) as it prevents the model from the bad bad dust.

    Masts

I've been working on the masts.  I could not work with the dowels provided with the kit, the wood was just too hard to shape, so I tried using some square basswood from the local Hobby Lobby and that worked much better for me. I could use my knife to get close to the shape and then sand smooth and round.  Working from the plans I'd decide on width several places along the length and then check with the calipers and slowly work the mast till it was close to the width from the plans and looked "right" to me.  I stained it with the same stain I've been using and used black construction paper for the iron bands of the Main and Fore masts.

I really enjoyed making the tops, but I had to substitute planking for the solid tops from the kit.

To get a little spacing between each plank I cut the planks longer than they needed to be and then laid them out on wax paper till i got the spacing I wanted and then I put glue on the laser cut rim piece where that section of planks would be and then set it down on top of the planks, trying not to disturb the spacing as I set it down. and then I trimmed and sanded the planks till they were even with the rim.

When placing the masts I realized that when I left the hole in the decking for the Mizzen mast, I placed the hole directly over the top of the spot in the frame for the Mizzen, not remembering that the Mizzen comes out at an angle so the hole is a bit out of place.  I managed to enlarge the hole and even had to undercut the mast a bit so it can sit at the proper angle.  I will have to custom build a Mizzen mast wedge and make it a bit bigger on one side to cover the gap between the mast and the deck.

I think I've gotten all the blocks and fittings on the masts that I'll need but I'm still not gluing them in place until I have to.

Ive been struggling with the bread and butter lifeboat and I just don't see any way to make it look presentable.  Possibly if I had an electric tool to work on the inside but even then I don't think it will ever look right.  I took a good look at the JSGearson post on building the Model Shipways lifeboat and since it was only about $5, I've ordered one and will give it a try, it looks challenging but fun.  I'll be referencing that post as I build it and can't give enough thanks for the effort put into documenting everything and laying it out so clearly.

Not a lot of time I have spend on the ST, but I’m still alive and kicking

So here’s an update about the progress I did so far.

Instead of using the bright colored blocks provided by the kit, I made my own 4mm blocks out of teak wood.
.. Not the best wood to use for manufacturing blocks..,  too grainy as you will see and a lot of them ended in the trash  ..

    But I like the color..

After having prepared the bowsprit, I placed it in position.., but I might regret it placing it in this early rigging stage of the build.

I decided to furnish the rear quarters,  As the stern will be a little hard to see into I didn't go crazy.
I have stained one side below the water line not sure if I like it so I have left the other side alone for now.
I'm thinking I may even do one side different from the other, turn the ship around and get a whole new look...

Today I couldn`t do much as I am waiting on some tools that I bought on ebay, I only started to paint some things:

I am still not convinced of a brass boat, do you think that it is worth buying a little kit in wood? I didn`t finish painting it yet because I am not sure if I will use it.

I also started to paint the figurehead, but my brush isn`t great, as there is a light split in the middle of the hair, will have to buy new one.

Finally I also started to paint the cabin, but I am not sure which color i should take for the decorations. (Now they are still plain metal). I am hesitating on gold, light brown or very dark brown, does someone have any suggestions on the colour?
I wish I could scratch buil the cabin but I don`t have the tools for that, so I will just go with the brass one.
