  1. Hi Lawrence. Thanks for the comment. I enjoy making the videos. Am not as creative though as my younger snowboarding friends. I should turn one project over to them to create one. Just the facts for me... LOL... and Michael made it worthwhile doing the video as he suggests he got an idea out of it. That's all I hoped for in making it. It could have been more detailed but I am told nobody really likes videos over 2 minutes. (I break the rule all the time!) Rob
  2. Erik: I'm finally getting back to a 'normal routine' and checking everyone's logs. Your work is looking awesome! I tried to figure out how to use the dividers to figure out the planking but am not nearly as talented as you! One thing I have discovered in this build is that the whole hull is covered with paint and/or copper. I was extra careful on the parts above the waterline but below in the 'copper zone' I figured it didn't matter too much as the copper covers any minor defects etc. Just a thought for you. Oh Erik, it took me forever to get the copper tiles done. Just a warning. LOL.... I am looking forward to the rest of your build. Did you check out Pompei (Nick)'s build? You two seem to be at the same high level of expertise and precision. Have fun! Rob
  3. Hi Jerry. You are really working away on your ship. It is coming along so fast. I sure seem to be plodding along. Any idea how much time you spend in the shipyard? Appreciate all your comments and those of fellow builders. It sure helps to have those discussions flushed out. Thanks for all the time you spend posting your log. Really appreciate your effort! Keep up the great looking build.
  4. Hi Gil: hope all is awesome this 2014 for you and family. It was a chore to finish the tiles. Should have taken a way less time but that flood didn't help matters and the cleanup. And we have had another bonus season for snow in the mountains and they are forever calling me to go snowboarding. However, it is done (well except the rudder). At one point I could not imagine it being finished. But, the second side went a lot faster than the first. First side I did each tile one by one. Second side I did them two at a time. Most important thing is that it is done and when I look back it was great to have the diversion away from other matters here in the city. Now to figure out the next steps after the rudder. I've run into a small roadblock in that i can't find the Hat 8098 British sailors anywhere. Have had three on order since October but have not come in. If I don't get them, I won't be able to put sailors on the first gun deck. But, I still have some time before I close it in. Thanks for your compliment on the tiles. Good to hear from you. Rob
  5. Thanks everyone. Looks like I will continue with the plates and finish the rudder. May as well. Pulled the bubble pack away from the base and have the model open now still upside down. I am pleased that I did cover the ship during the coppering as it really would have taken a beating if I had left it unprotected. Figured that I best do the rudder while it is in this position. Oh to Glennard - I lined the ports but decided to drill the holes for the cannons when I got the outer hull done. They actually don't seem to end up lined up exactly right. But the best part is -- you can't tell. Even looking in with the cannon barrel to the right or left of centre on my backgrounds one can't see that they are off, right on or even upside down. It does lighten the interior of the lower gun ports however. I just shut off the lights and looked at the model again "in the dark" with the interior lights turned to the on position. Heck, the copper tiles don't glow!!!! LOL... maybe a few volts would help them sizzle... Well I'm on to reading and catching up on everyone's posts. I've got a lot of catch up to do. I'm so used to putting those latex gloves on I'm even keyboarding now with them on. Yikes... hope it they don't make me want to become a medical student or ..... I made a video (under 3 minutes) about putting these copper tiles on the hull. It may help someone who is thinking about how to pull it off. Here is the list of materials that I used that is listed in the video. Latex gloves – 3 boxes of 100 Glue (medium) and debonder Q-tips Clear plastic ruler Xacto knives – 2 sizes Sharp modelling scissors (I bought Tamiya Craft Tool 12A7) Tweezers Small brush Clothes pins (wooden) Various small pieces of wood Pencil(s) Model masking tape Phone (nearby) Radio Video screen (computer, tablet) (for streaming netflix etc.) Comfortable chair Lighted magnifying glass Clear Plastic floor mat Empty plastic containers and lids (coffee, margarine work well) Light coloured working surface (easier to find dropped pieces) Digital camera Monitors to examine photos of work Corner to put your feet up and relax Fan and window (fresh air) Munchie space Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_zfinxM9a8
  6. ALL DONE! - JANUARY 15 -- THE HULL IS DONE!!!! - just the rudder now. I want to go celebrate somewhere. Am pleased with my effort. It is by no means perfect nor is it exactly how the real Victory was coppered but what the heck. Only we know. Going to stop for a few days. Will gather the images together for a video "How I coppered the hull".. Will see how it turns out. Will start to read everyone's posts now. I just had to get through this! Wonder if I can get a bonus from the shipyard for finishing only two weeks late. Heck, most get that from governments when they are even years late building ships.. LOL.. oh ... it's not finished! Guess a couple more years at my speed! Now what do I do with the copper? Do I apply a clear coat? Do I leave it alone? Maybe that will be the next reading on the weekend. Will find some ideas here on site.
  7. It's New Year's Day, my deadline for finishing the second side of copper tiles has arrived. It is a good thing this shipyard invokes no financial penalties for not meeting target dates. Came close. Will be finished by the weekend. (At least I expect to be finished).. Happy 2014 to all.
  8. Thanks Lawrence. Getting there. I've not wanted to post each week or so as it is as you know just tile after tile. I am going to make a short video on the tools I've used the do the coppering and make some suggestions to someone who is going to be 'laying tiles'... We've had Chinooks blow in and out this past week which causes wacky temperature changes... like +9 to -21 in 12 hours but it is winter... and there is a saying here: 'wait fifteen minutes and the weather will change'... am taking a look at tonight's photos. I take them each session to see if areas need to be 'fixed'. Have the bow just about complete... now for the stern before Tuesday evening. (Not going to the mountains tomorrow -- )
  9. Close to meeting my January 1, 2014 deadline for the copper tiles. We will see how much snow falls in the mountains... LOL.. Trust you didn't mind not reporting tile by tile report... Oh, hope all had a Merry Christmas forgot to post the "Greetings":
  10. Finally back at the Victory! Snowboarding season has started and the time I set aside to get this done in October and November has just passed away... Will get this done when not in the mountains... LOL... aiming now for completion January 1, 2014... (better not be 2015)
  11. Thanks Lawrence. I will do better on the other side am sure but discovered part way through that I did the copper tiles on my 'finished side'. Decided early on that one side would be 'first'. Do all the crazy mistakes on one side and keep the other side for final. (read that somewhere) Have been pretty good at it till now. Oh well. I think the biggest challenge too will be to make sure the second side is done basically the same as the first because the tiles 'should lin-up' in the view looking towards the bow or stern. If I had a second chance would have gone only three or max four rows down on horizontal. Went one too far for sure but I can't change that now on the second side. I haven't started again yet. Will probably wait for the first rainy evening. We have been having spectacular weather here so it is just way to hard to sit and do copper plating. Just looked at the weather forcast-- periods of rain: tomorrow... LOL.. so much for that excuse! Oh, I have meetings tomorrow including evening.. what a relief...
  12. Well, one side done! Now for more... I have just flipped the image over.. when I was doing the tiles I took images every day and looked at them on the computer to see if I was going "off course". This did assist and picked up errors as I was going. You might try it too. The tiles really reflect anything in the room. Hard to get a picture.
  13. Getting closer to finishing one side. Only all summer... LOL...at this rate it will take me all winter to finish other... because winter is my busy time... mind you there won't be a flood in winter...
  14. Thanks for letting me know that Kevin. I opened all the packages at the same time too. Have been able to do a few kicks at the hull. This is where I'm at tonight. Am not sure if this is going to turn out ok for the copper plating lines but have not got much choice but to continue now. Have flipped the image. I sense it is not going to be visually correct. But will decide when this side is done.
  15. Thanks Kevin. Just getting back to a bit of normal. We've got two flood relief concerts on the go here and I've been a bit involved so it has kept me away from the shipyard and on-line. I think I get the concept you explained of the gore line.. So I should continue down and will go with at least the five rows that I read somewhere, think it was Longridge. Just opened up McGowan's book and decided my hull won't look like the expansion plan of the copper plates on pages 140-141. Get to do some tiles tomorrow! That will be the first since the 19th. so much for doing a bit each day... I wonder if the tiles will now start to age differently as I've taken so long to do even the one side. Not sure there is much I can do anyway.
  16. Thanks for the well wishes. Have been able to start back. Patrick and Lawrence.. it does seem to go on forever. Have made some progress. Photos below. I took one of the photos and electronically flipped it so I could see if the upper tiles are running somewhat parallel. They seem ok. But the eye can be deceiving. Still not sure if I should go to the 5th horizontal. Anyone want to make a comment about a fifth row? Should be at that row by the weekend... well at least I hope!
  17. it's still July 4th but barely. Belated happy July 4th to all our friends in the U.S. Best neighbours in the world! Haven't done one tile since the other day.
  18. She is looking awesome! How many horizontal rows of copper tiles did you place from the waterline down? Is it four Nick? Or is it none? I can't tell from the photos. Am I misinterpreting the concept of horizontal tiles from the waterline down? I only hope mine turns out as sweet as your build. Hey, I survived the flood -- can't wait for snow.... LOL.... Good thing my Victory wasn't ready for launch! LOL....
  19. Hi Konstantin: I see it happens there too. We are over the worst. Spent the last days volunteering and helping others not so fortunate. Here's some of our volunteer gang. We got the basement cleared of water in two hours, and filled the bin in another neighbourhood in less than an hour. We just walked from house to house. There have been literally thousands of volunteers! It's bin row in the flooded areas niow... the area houses are being rebuilt now... no sense waiting.. Oh, for my fellow Canadians that is Mrs. Harper standing tall on the back of the garbage truck (black T-shirt). She slugged away with us in the muck and water for three days! The flood only touched a relatively small portion of the city. But is was quite the show.... as said before we are fortunate, almost all will be rebuilt and soon. But that was yesterday.... today is CANADA DAY ... happy Canada Day to my fellow Canadians... Celebrations have been moved to three locations today as the main show usually takes place on an island in the middle of the river... LOL... the island is still there but just.... Everyone is trying to make a giant Canadian flag. (This is the east side of the skate park in the west end of the downtown. So I looked at the Victory this morning and tried my hand at placing a couple tiles. It is much easier putting wood, debris, drywall and buckets of dirt onto the streets. Have lost my touch... LOL... well, will have to destroy a few copper tiles to get back in the groove.. (actually already did this morning so stopped until tonight...) Here is where I'm at: slow or what! Debating on five horizontal rows. I figure the five rows will end up about the dark horizontal line on the bow. Am proceeding with five unless someone suggests - no way! Figured I better see where the horizontal tiles will lay on the hull so I didn't take the tiles too far up the keel etc.
  20. Just got allowed back in. Power on... my Victory didn't go anywhere and there are still lots of copper tiles to go! Thanks to all for your best wishes.
  21. Wanted to give you an idea of some of the destruction in some areas of the city. I am still evacuated but might get in tonight. There is now a huge volunteer effort to help our fellow citizens in the flood stricken areas of the city. We are fortunate. Only one death attributed to the floods here in Calgary. This is 8 blocks from where I live. We will have the area rebuilt in a year or so. Am certain of that. The economy here is still booming. Feel sorry for my friends who lost their houses. Haven't thought about copper tiles now for a while.
  22. Thanks Andy... no person killed here in Calgary evacuation. We are thankful for that today. Was just out a few blocks away this is the story today.. Oh, where the car is submerged.. is a walkway... there was no river 36 hours ago. The lower picture one can usually walk across the twenty foot wide river with water level knee deep won't post anymore of the flooding... time for rebuilding...
  23. it's been a hectic couple days here in Calgary. Have been evacuated as I live in the downtown area. Staying with friends up the hill a few blocks away. it is an awesome start to the 'day after'. Took this a few minutes ago. A bit deceiving as the downtown core is less than twelve blocks away from this spot. The panorama view has distorted it. You may have seen the flood pictures. My victory is safe and dry on the 4th floor however there is no power to keep the music going... LOL... Well, it is a real break from the copper tiles. Hope to be back in Monday or Tuesday.
  24. Have a wonderful cruise. Thanks for the posts of the hull. Looks great! Hope you get a chance to see a bit of Vancouver. If you get the opportunity to get near Telegraph Cove (mid-northern part of Vancouver Island - near Port McNeill) it is an awesome place to see killer whales. Does the Diamond Princess take the inland passageway or go out on the western side of Vancouver Island? Asking too many questions... Have a great time!
  25. Totally understand some of the comments re copper tiles and mounting them. Does this ever take time. I've only done this in almost a week. Supposed to rain tomorrow. Will break my 'no daytime work in the shipyard except weekends' if there is a substantial downpour. It may be another two months before I get both sides done. ... one plate at a time....
