We are at the end of a long journey and the Victory has finally taken to sail and made it to her home port without incident I might add. I made sure and rode in the back of the pickup all the way to the Library, which was only about 2 miles, but nail biting miles they were. I felt every little bump in the road, even though I told my son in law not to drive over 10 miles an hour. But it seems not even what you thought was a smooth road really isn't that smooth when moving something so fragile. They had a few guys from the City come by my house to help load it up and then met us at the library to unload and set her up. The news papers were there and will do a press release. But thankfully there wasn't a lot of fan fair or fuss made about it, I wasn't wanting that and I'm glad the City respected my wishes. Like I told the library Coordinator that my gester wasn't all that noble, I just have always wanted to build a large Victory model, but had no where to display it. So now I can come by and enjoy it any time I want.

Here is a few pictures and even one of me, the old fat guy in the yellow shirt.

Well, the Victory is finished and safely placed in her display case, ready for her maiden trip to the Library. I'm looking at first or second week of December for delivery especially since I'm coming off a case of the flu.

Well, I'm figuring about 5-6 more hours on the Vic and she'll be ready for her maiden voyage to the local Library.

There was a kit by Sergal of the Great Harry - larger than 50 inches.  It looks like the Mary Rose on steroids.  Its no longer in production but pops up from time to time on ebay.  Google it for images of the kit - hope that helps.

    Here's the 58" version, Mike.  Here's the 43" kit.

    The 58" version finished:

What do you think, maybe a weekend to build?

I built the old version of SoS way back. I don`t have the plans anymore but I believe they were dated from the 70`s or early 80`s. I remember that it was advertised as 43 inches long. From what I have seen the older kit version is a much nicer kit than the newer version - less pre-made parts but better quality materials. there was no balsa in the old version. I don`t remember the scale.

    Hi Mike,

I only can remeber several kits from *plastic* in different scales (Airfix, Revell, Aurora) an the subscription kit from De Agostini in 1:84. Even an intense search with Google did not give any more solution...

What an absolute beauty. I can't wait to see the finished product. The shrouds and lower mast are done a bit differently than they way I do mine. I find it easier to get the mast perpendicular if built all at once and then installed into the mast holes.

Very nice start on your build. I'm quite surprised though at the contents of the kit. I figured with the price of this kit, the small bits and pieces would have at least come in a plastic container and to not lose any once the packages are open. That is one thing I like about Artesania Latina and OcCre, they supply nice reusable plastic storage cases with the bits and pieces already separated and stowed away.

She's definitely an outstanding build Mike, and I hope they give it the appreciation, and you, the recognition this generous gesture deserves.

It looks like I have a confirmation on delivery of the Victory to the http://mylakelibrary.org/libraries/wt_bland_public_library.aspxwhich will be Friday morning December 11, 2015. I will try and get some pictures of the delivery and setup at the library and post them here on this thread kind of as a closure. Now the hard part will be getting it there in one piece. I tried building it with the thought in mind that it would have to travel, so I hope I have everything supported enough to make the trip without any issues.

Well, is was supposed to be, but I think I may have one more left in me as long as my health holds out. I bought a OcCre Montanes kit from a forum member last year just in case I felt froggy. So it's waiting in the wings for me once I re-coop from building the Victory. Yes, I had a plaque made up for it with my name on it and the date of the start of the build and the finish date.

This might be old age creeping in, but I can recall or at least I think I recall a smaller version of the SOS, which would be the Mantua version that measures like 43 inches or so when finished. But I also seem to recall a bigger version of the SOS possibly by the same company Sergal/Mantua that was quite a bit bigger like in the 50-60 inch range that was arounf back in the 80's or 90's. Is think factual or am I delusional

I bought this kit from a forum member some time ago with the intent on building it as a donation project once I finished the Latina Victory Library donation project. I will start the build in a month or so once I have taken a break from the Victory build. I do not intend to do a build log of this kit. But I may do a little review of the kit. This would just be my observations of the kit, manufacture and content. I also will not make a decision as to who or what organization will be the benefactor of the Montane's donation until I'm about 3/4 of the way through the build as to not place any added pressure on myself while building.

A little back ground on the ship: The figurehead of this ship is not the royal lion but a “Montañes” (highlander), in gratitude for the financial contribution towards her construction made by the people of the mountains. She was launched in Ferrol on 14th May 1794. It is said that she was an extraordinary vessel, whether sailing close to the wind, running free or with a following wind, and that, more than any other ship, she kept her batteries out of the water. She was engaged in a number of battles, including Trafalgar, where she mounted 76 guns and 4 carronades with mortars, located on her quarter deck. On 6th March 1810, in a violent storm, she sank off the Bay of Cadiz.
