I finished the capstan and the forward round skylight and am still struggling with the deck layout. I plan to follow the kit layout for the kit build but for the scratch build i want the deck layout to be as it would have been during the first race. So far i cant find definitive directions so have turned to the paintnigs of the time. I will include the ones that i am being guided by. I feel that the top of the Capstan was painted red. While the top moulding around the skylight was white. The forward grating would have been covered either with a canvas cover or with a wooden cover to keep the sea water out while crossing the Atlantic. Only one of the paintings shows a civered grating, all the other show a rather large structure like a second access point. I also see no cushions on the seat so will not show any. I any case they would never have been covered in black canvas. I will use blue or red for kit boat. Any input would be appreciated.

Yes its unfortunate that your good work will all be covered up. Having said that it facilitates the finishing of the bottom of the boat with various fillers to give a fantastic finish. Some builders may object to this but personally i like perfection when possible.

This may be the time to start a collection of the Micro Lux tools from Micromart. I have most of them and with the exception of the belt sander they are excellent tools. They have a wonderful mini drill that i use almost every day. Best regrads kevin -

Hi Rick i am so glad you have found them useful. All I can tell you is that although power tools help make the work easy, hand tools can do every thing a power tool can do. The Bluejacket is a great kit one that you will have great fun with. If I can be of any help feel free to contact me. Best regards Kevin

The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
