A little more progress today I did modify the procedure a little now I am using a drop of water in a saucer to wash off the sanding pad. A couple of new pads with some added thickness glued to the T section using styrene strip which was then rounded on one edge.

I have started to sand down the area under the lip of the main deck using this new pad.

I am also using a new small jewelers saw cutting V block with a couple of 8x32 thumb screw to hold the parts it is set up to also cut into the end of dowels up to 3/8 diameter. The picture shows one of the new pads being shaped with the jewelers saw. The thumb screws are really helpful for this sort of task.

The screws are threaded up through the wood and locked up to the wood, this allows for the thumb screws to be loosened and tightened without the screws falling out the bottom or having to hold them while making adjustments.

Jan, I have sort of made up my mind but first i want to get the divets filled then take it from there.

The new sanding pad is proving to be one of those tools that I wonder how I ever got along without it, and why some manufacturer hasn't already got them on the market.......remember that you saw them here first.

I have been spotting the small divets with paint then a day later doing a semi wet sanding by just licking my finger and wiping my wet finger over the sanding pad. It wets the wet and dry paper just enough to stop it clogging, but not enough to cause any problems with the model.

I have also been continuing to wind up stay cables and a shot of more progress.

Oh yes and in my spare time I have been reworking the bathroom in cottage style with Cedar wainscotting, to keep on the good books of my lovely wife Judy.

due to the design (flap back top) it is not necessary to have full standing hight, and also as the stair immediatey leads downwards. Here the "hinges" on the lid are not mounted yet

I made some progress on the Pelikaan. Wooden guards and some metalworking beneath the spraydeck. Next stap will be adding all the details and then the opening where the fish goes in the ship. Lots of work to do but very rewarding.

And here some parts of the ship safely in my new showcase. I made this case to protect the parts when I work on other parts.

Thank you very much Carl and Michael,

    and all the "likes"...

    Carl,
the etched stair sides and the steps are only folded and you`re right, afterwards (after priming and painting) glue into place with a drop of CA

    Michael,
right, I agree, although I have highest respect for the skills of those professional builders work in much earlier days

Here is a little update .......
on the making of the aft handrail portion in place where the railing performs the rounded bend. I tried several times two flat bend the mahagony handrail by wetting and soaking, with and without heat, etc, very frustrating and without success. Then came the idea not to flat-bend over the 1,5 mm wide side, but to flat-bend and laminate 3 single 0,5 mm thick strips with CA and with help of a little jig, Sigh of relief, it worked out well. Only have to mount and carefully sand down to the required flatness

    Little update...

the stairways are quite easy made due to the pricise brass etch patterns.
One of my most importent work documents is the orientation plan for vents, red indicated (size and tube diameter), and the stairs, green indicated

    Update :

    Build log part 50....

I`ve taken down all the boatsdeck, the dry fitting and vents, etc, in order to prepare for the permanent mounting of the aft boatsdeck half. But first there must be some fitting out to the promenade-deck-after-half portion like....
    - fitting the mahogany handrail to the long railing
    - mounting the 6 anchors on each side for the aft mast shrouds and backstays (they will go upwards through the boats deck in twelve places whilst the boats deck is glued on to the brass framework and the deckhousings below. Also the holes for the vent tubes and the aft mast that go through the deck have to be brought in alignment. Trust that all will be quite a tricky moment, hope it will go well and like it was intended.
    - All the figurines on the aft half of the promenade deck must also be placed before the boatsdeck goes on (otherwise no access later !)

The little red tape markings on the outside frame are for showing where to put on the clamps when glueing the deck down...

    Nils

Mahagony handrail all around. Red little tape markers, where to put on the clamps

10 of the 20 benches (scale 1:144) go on to the total promenade deck

the blackened anchors go through the boatsdeck when it is on and are for fastening the aft mast`s buckle screws of the shrouds and backstays

I haven't been keeping the log up to date, so let me try now. I have the hull ready for planking. When I decided to build this at 1/4 to foot I didn't stop and think how big that would be. Roughly 50 inchs without landing platforms. This will be a good place to use all the material left from other builds.

    Hello Folks,

Offcourse this is a buildinglog for my modeltrawler but without a proper workspace I can't build anything. So in the last few weeks/months I made myself a new hobbyroom. Allmost all the materials are secondhand and the wood came from shop windows ans changingrooms. The floor is from an old classroom.

Completed the hull planking, quite happy with things so far - need to do some finishing touches to the bow still (used some vertical strips that need sanding), and next step will be a rough sanding using 60 grade grit, before applying some resin into the joints.
After than some more sanding and applying filler where needed.

    Update

some of the actual ships upper structures are from planked wood and I would like to resemble this as well...., Thats why some aft deck housings and later on also the housings / structures around the forward comand bridge on upper levels are obviosly wooden planked.
In order to resemble the wooden planking, I made some little test pieces of 3 mm wood stripes with pencil caulked edges. Whereby the nutwood stripes come out too dark, the test piece with beech planking and a light cherry stain and varnish on it comes near to mahagony with a light silky appeal, and builds a good contrast to the brass window frames

Put on the aft hatch with two compagnionway hatch-type-entrees, and the large doublestory light before the aft deck winches......

    Gary, thanks for dropping by.

This evening I used the new third hand to aid in soldering the aft stairs back together, it took a little while to get the hang of adjusting the fixture, but the control is super, I am pleased with the operational aspects of it.

Did not take any pics of the actual soldering but after washing it off I used the fixed stairs to reshape the starboard handrail, the port handrail is still fixed to the lifeboat deck.

    So from here
