Hi Nat From what I have received so far,the castings are excellent quality.The issues for me is that they wont fit my modified build but also that they have little resemblance to historical evidence.I think the most crucial aspect is wood selection.Boxwood or Pear are the preferred timbers.You could theoretically use any wood but you would make the job much harder.The grain structure of box and pear is so fine it makes it alot easier to shape.I hopefully will be posting more pics of this piece as work progresses. As I seem to have encouraged a few members to have a go at carving,I am posting a few updates to try and illustrate the processes involved.I appreciate these may differ from what procedures some other members may follow,but this way works for me,as I mentioned earlier I have a couple of conditions that effect the dexterity and sensitivity in my hands. Picture one shows the initial shape roughed out in plan using a combination of a scalpel and a 1mm round burr in the dremel. In picture two I have started to remove material to start to get the correct levels.The carving blank is overthick so I can slowly workdown to the correct thicknesses.The fine detail is left overwidth until I get close to the finished shape.This is then thinned out towards the end of the process.This helps to prevent unwanted breakout. Hi Bill I would only like to echo what everyone else has said,truly splendid work.I too have picked the Sovereign as the very steep learning curve into the world of carving and I don't think that without someone like yourself as inspiration,I would of tackled it.I have managed to obtain a copy of Busmann's book and must say I must of been mad to contemplate this project without it.I shall try my hardest to do this fine ship justice,but you have set the bar so very high. Hi Admiral, I think the motor and electrics is the easy bit.Any 380-540 size can motor(model car or boat)would do it,connected through a switch to a mains adapter preferably 6v.I think the hard bits mounting the drill bit.Easy if you have a metal lathe but if you haven't,very awkward.Any lack of trueness will certainly result in broken drills.   9. I have fitted the carving.I have used aluminium tube 8mm long to replicate the lead lining that was used in the hawse holes.The bores have been countersunk to remove the corner.On to the other side now Kind Regards Nigel

Thank you very much Eddie Thats very interesting Matti.I have completed the carving today.I have had to glue it to the end of a piece of strip to work on it so the camera wont focus on it properly.I hope to fit it tomorrow night so I should be able to take a decent pick then. Thank you very much indeed Matti I think the problem with a video is that it would be very long.I have five hours work so far in that little carving.I anticipate it could take up to another ten to complete it.This build is the first time I have done any proper carving,so I am learning as I go along.The one thing I have learned is to only use burrs to remove material bulk.I get better results doing the final shaping with the tip of a scalpel blade and dental probes.When I do the carving for the opposite side,I will post some pics at stages to try and illustrate how I go about it.My method my not be the same as everyone else but I have a couple of conditions that affect my dexterity and sensitivity in my hands so all my techniques have had to be adapted to suit. I wanted to concentrate on the remaining work to enable me to fit the prow deck.I first started on the trim that runs from under the figurehead back to the wales at the bow.I started by cutting a wishbone shape out of pear that fitted around the stem.This was then notched to take the gussets at each side.I couldn't make this from one piece as the gussets slope with the wales.The wishbone piece was shaped as the sides taper in both planes.This was fitted and the gussets were shaped and fitted.The next job is the anchor hawse holes and carved surrounds.After looking at the artwork and refering to sephton's book I thought that this supposed angel with outstretched wings has a slight demonic appearance.I first cut a pear strip and shaped it to fit the curve of the bow.I have started the carving work and you will notice I have given the angel a skull for a face.I hope to be able to depict the rib structure on the body.The rest of the carving is mainly in the rough at the moment.
