    Hi,

I just want to point out that Impressionist paintings command some of (if not) the highest prices in the art world. I truly believe that a lot of what we do is art. The important thing is to present a cohesive "whole", i.e. dont go hyper detailed on one part of the build and gloss over others. Just my 2 cents worth.

    Best,
    John

    Hi All,

I made the gammoning fish next, there are three of them needed. To make these I drilled a 10mm hole in the centre of apiece of 12mm dowel and then cut off two rings at the same angle as the stive angle on the end of the bowsprit, each ring is 8mm wide.

I then carefully cut each ring in half and spaced them on the bowsprit so that 9 turns of 0.75mm cord would fit between them  Please note they are not glued in place yet.

As you can see in the last two photos I have also made the Dolphin Striker and the Flagpole which will be attached to the cap later

Thank you very much Jason No I shaped it by setting a fence up on the MF70 miller and fed the strip through gently.I went this route as I had to reduce the boxwood stock down in size as well. The corners were radiused by hand with a sanding stick followed by final finishing with steel wool

    Kind Regards

Lovely Nigel, very impressive.  I see you shaped a piece of decorative strip beneath the windows, how did you do this?  If it was with a scraper, how did you make it?  Would love to try making my own at some point.

A little bit of a update More progress on treenailing.I then took a little break to concentrate on a job that needs doing before I can complete the framing of the stern. The lower set of windows need completing as access will be greatly restricted when the upper stern section is in place as this overhangs these windows.
After the outer framework was installed, mica was used to glaze these from behind. The framing is in 0.8mm square boxwood. The mullions have been added in one piece. The transoms are being fitted in sections.Everything is being glued in place with PVA.The plan is to fill the panes with matt polyurethane as before. This should also fix everything in place and allow me to lightly sand the face of the framework flush with the aid of a custom made sanding stick.
Now having a break as my eyes and head is spinning cutting 2mm long pices of strip and gluing them in position

    Kind Regards

    Hi All,

While working on the upper gun deck I also started work on the bowsprit because I wanted to fit it to the model at this stage so it would be easier to do the gammoning now, before the head rails and gratings were fitted to the bow.

I followed Longridge's description of making the bowsprit as I wanted to add more detail to it than the kit supplied version

As this model is only a section the bowsprit will consist of the main spar and about a 100mm long section of the jib boom.

The bowsprit was made in two parts, the main spar and a square tenon that is fitted to the end to locate the cap.

The main spar is made form a piece of 10mm pine dowel, tapered to 9mm for about 200mm from the end. The end was cut at an angle so that when the cap is fitted it sits vertical line with the stem. The tenon was made from 6mm square walnut and an angle was cut on one end of it to match the end of the bowsprit

I had To make a new cap because the supplied one had two holes in it, drilled square. When I tried to file the bottom hole square and at the required angle it became to large for the tenon.

I drilled a pilot holes in the new one at the require angle using my dremel drill stand And then drilled the lower hole out to 5mm and squared it to fit the tenon the top hole was drilled to 6mm to take the jib boom.

The top and bottom edges of the cap were also bevelled at the same angle as the holes in it

Please note the tenon is only dry fitted and will be glued in place when the cap is fitted

Thank you Nigel The windows actually form part of a fan whose centre is somewhere miles above the model. The dimensions were taken from the plan,at least an average was obtained as there were minute discrepancies comparing each window on the drawing. This gave me the shape. The internal framework is purely by eye.It is easiest to fit the central bars and then visually split the remaining sections in half when fitting the other pieces.Had there been an even number of bars,it would have been interesting

    Kind Regards

    George,

As always thanks for your kind remarks (thanks for the likes as well). My pleasure to share, I have learned so much from so many of you.

Minor alteration; After looking at the basswood rings my gut was telling me that the arcs are too wide. With such tiny glew points for the rings, I foresaw the rings snapping off.

So wet some new pieces and wrapped them around a much smaller diameter battery. I figure that when they dry and "set" there should be minor pressure towards the glue points, as opposed to away from. We shall see.

Not sure how those two thicker pieces (on the right all wrapped up) will dry ?? Hmmm.

Looking more carefully at the museum platform reproduction it appears as if the lower ring is wider than the two above. I have not had good luck finding other detailed pics of this part of the ship.

    Regards,

    Michael

    Hi Mates,

Started working on the bowsprit mast tip assembly and its platform.

Initially I had decided to incorporate the wooden discs that Corel had included for this purpose.

Bore out the center, narrowed the thickness, added lower step boards, then instead decided to just build it from scratch (as I will for all of the others as well).

Using Basswood strips, heated in water and rolled, let to dry overnight.

The strips will be stained a darker shade before installing.

Started the lower rail brackets attaching them to the rounded planks…..

That’s it so far, always nice when you folks drop in, many thanks.

    Cheers,

    Michael
