Great work mate!!!A big undertaking, but to be honest anything lesser would not be appropriate for your build

I know how that feels Nigel - you are in good company on that aspect! Do your tutorial when you have both the time and the inclination - most of us will be patient !

Hey all! I have started to plan for the next steps.

One thing was deciding the look of the deadeyes. This is the look I want: Heartshaped and quite wonky and irregular in shape.

I ended up just sanding the round ones in the kit to imitate that shape. I also tried to make the metal parts holding some of them, the kit suggests rope on these ones also, but I want metal ones.

This is how far I am doing a test version:

Glad to hear you have managed a little build time mate.Your masts are coming on well, with some great detailing   .There is certainly a lot more work involved in these than one would expect at first glance.Your model is developing a wonderful 'organic' look to the colours and I love the contrast with lighter shades on the deck and masting

Thank you very much indeed Nick   I know what you mean, but I am the other way round,I automatically treenail everything   The only reason I paused for thought is that I need to order some more drillbits     This pause had made me take a second glance

Thanks that would be great. I'm sure that others will also find your tutorial super helpful, and informative.

YES WHSmith. We certainly visited those stores though preferred the one on Baker Street that was close to our flat. Oxford Street had the "big" one (:-). Trinidad would be the ginny pig....for your caulking technique.

Looks super cool! What scale are you planning on going for? How much would you charge for the cast and how much for the 3d model?

    hi Nigel

Let me add my compliments on a fantastics deck to the already very long list here!! Fully deserved. I'm sure you'll do a great job with the treenails if you go down that route but it is so tempting to say "Dont touch it!! It looks great as is!! Leave it!!"

    Thanks so much Scott.

Just returned from a trip up north to see the kids and grandkids and to attend my 50th law school reunion. Had a great time, but happy to get back to Essex.

I've completed the waist deck framing. The construction followed the materials and procedures used for the other deck framing ( all of which has been previously described ). With this step, all of the upper deck framing is now done. I've included a full profile photo of the model to this point. The next work will be the limited deck planking to be done in the waist.

    Nigel,

I've gone back to review your; After each plank is cut and tapered, black tissue paper is glued to one edge and one end..., along with all of the subsequent comments. I'm a bit confused about what kind of black tissue paper would be appropriate. Did you use black paper napkins? I want to try your brilliant idea on my next "under the table" project. Please don't spent to much time with this quire, but I would appreciate your advice. As usual......

Thank you very much indeed Michael for your kind words   Sadly the distinct four seasons of my childhood has now been replaced by a few sunny days around Easter and variable weather for the rest of the year featuring lots of rain     I live in hope of the heatwave of 76/77?     but don't miss 6ft snowdrifts

I'm late to the party in praising your deck planking, but let me add my admiration for your work. For what it's worth, I like the look of treenailing, but I would understand if you choose not to do it.

Not a bad plan on the lighting, Nigel.  You can get very small LED's (I think 3mm maybe smaller) and by putting in the proper resisitor they can get really dim.  I put an external pot on mine and I can dim them down to almost nothing.  The nice thing is, with LED's is no heat. There's also some "flicker" setups here in both the articles and in a couple of the sub-forums for doing this.

Well, looks like I'm in the doghouse over this one. Woof!

Eamonn, you're right, it was always called the 'doghouse' on yachts, and I have sailed on one or two as well – although I'd rather not say when. I'm not really sure what the structure was called on vessels of our period though. Anyone?

How about Nigel's word 'enclosure', although that sounds as though it has no top... which could then get confused with the 'manger' on a lower gun deck... which I believe is where animals weren't kept... although not on cutters or schooners, 'cos they didn't have 'em... lower gun decks that is... if you see what I mean. I think I need a quick lie down.

I think I'm with Nigel on this one, as I don't think you would be able to see much, just the top step if that. So, I'd save yourself a bit of work, and go with your instinct. As to 'brightening the place up', your Ballyhooligan is miles better than the kit already.

That's wot I was thinking too Nigel, as you say without retracting the 'sliding' roof arrangement all you would see would be the top step at best (and the tops of the 'sides' if you follow) I was thinking about half sliding the roof back.. your wee box painted black will be the solution I feel with inside the Dog House (Thanks Kester   that's also what we called the little 'sticking up' cabin on racing yachts, way back when I did that sorta thing  ) painted white,  as per Ollie's Mermaid (though Mermaid is a little later I think, I'd still like to brighten the place up a little as opposed to the bare walnut interior of the kit! the box will still be matt black though)

    Thanks Nigel

    Stay Well

    Hi Buddy
What started out as a little research into the term 'companionway'   as I always took this to be a general term to mean steps down from a deck into a cabin or lower deck, which it is,sorry Kester, but none the wiser as to the name of the actual enclosure, has led me to look at images of ballahoo's enclosure. You will only ever see the top tread,if that, unless your depict the sliding hatch on top fully or partly retracted You may end up making stairs and not be able to see them. You would still have to make a 'black box' for below deck level to create the illusion.

    Kind Regards

Thank you very much indeed mate   I would leave the copper in a natural finish. The lighting,if I go ahead will be using minibulbs, not leds.Run on half voltage they would give a soft, candlelike glow. This should provide very subtle lighting. The bulbs I use have a minimum lifespan of 16,000 hours so replacement would not be in my lifetime     unless of course I didn't switch them off for the next two years   .
    Kind Regards
