Some very nice photos and some very beautiful models, thank you for posting. One year, hopefully not in the too distant future,I would love to attend one of these conferences. As you can appreciate though,it is rather a long way,so would need a lot of forward planning.I am attending the international model boat show next month on my side of the 'pond' so I hope to have some nice pics to post.

I know it is a lot to ask Alex, but do you fancy doing a small tutorial on this? This technique is employed by quite a few builders in Eastern Europe, but as yet,has not really been employed in the western world.I think there may be many builders on here that would find this most interesting.I do however fully understand if you would rather keep the secret to yourself.it is a bit like asking for the recipe for kentucky fried chicken.

Of course there is no secret. All of these ancient methods and artificial aging recipes I found on the internet. I took a lot of experimenting and discover the most successful and easy recipes that give excellent (in my opinion) the result. I wanted to create a model of the ship that it was very similar to the old museum piece. I believe that it makes sense to make the experiment more to get the most excellent quality. I am willing to share my experience. The only problem is explanation. I do not have a daily practice in English but have a deficiency of daily time. So my English is very bad. To write messages I use the electronic translator and correct grammatical errors....

Master Modeler .... It's not my phrase and not my opinion. I believe that much remains to be achieved. It is only mid-way.
However, I sometimes use epithets. In the commercial aspect of it is very useful. However, I know that advertising is the most shameless thing, but with this statement always easy to accept. Advertising is the foundation of business.

Alex has been given the rare honor of being designated Master Modeler on his Russian ship model forum. It's easy to see why.

Go on Chris, you know you want to,Prince next, please please please.Just out of curiosity, how accurate are the original Amati plans I have?I know the decoration along the rails is inaccurate, but how about the overall hull lines?

Yes you are right, I am using bitumen for the pigment in wax solutions for aging wood and rigging. This  ancient way. However, we know that the bitumen is corrosive with respect to organic materials. So you can not use pure bitumen without beeswax. The negative impact of bitumen on organics was observed long ago, back in the 18th century. However, the method of protection was found by an experimental way. Bitumen is added as an additive to tar and wax solutions.
I use beeswax and mineral wax (paraffin). Beeswax has a very small molecular structure. The molecules bind mollekuly wax bitumen and bitumen can not destroy organic materials. By the way, the aging of sails I use a similar solution. But the basic solution always contains wax, paraffin, bitumen, resins, natural soap, wood (pine) turpentine.

i think its simply because there's more heat = more pressure = more recoil = more momentum, and if the ropes are stopping it from going further back it only has one place to go, much like when a you pull the brakes on a motorbike the back end goes up.

    But i'm not a scientist..

Just a small update.I have fitted the thro railing uprights for the last two decks(to be trimmed to height later in the build).I decided to treenail the prow deck.Call me mad as it is 1mm gratings but it just looked too plain compared to the hull. After I had cleaned the filler out of the holes using a 1mm sq piece of boxwood,I discovered some of the filler pigment had coloured some areas in the holes.I quite like this and adds a bit of artificial ageing, good job as I don't fancy remaking the deck.I then made a moulding out of pear sheet for where the deck abuts the bulkhead, using a combination of shaped x-acto blade and my pillar drill set up with a dremel milling cutter. Finally I sprayed the assembly with one coat of Ronseal Mattcoat.

    Hi folks,

Minor update on latest fix (:-) My posts always seem to be moving backwards, but hopefully when they (the fixes) are finished and progress can be made, it should all work out.

Note on pic. one that there is a break on the upper poop deck railing. I incorrectly built that in. Pic. two is the repair in progress. I'll post an update after its finished. As always I so appreciate your kind people looking in.

Amended: added a reference pic of 1:1 that shows you where I "goofed". Thanks Nigel for pointing this out (:-)

    Regards,

    Hi Anja
Well I do cheat a bit in that the instructions on the Italian site are six months infront of those here in GB.It gives me a preview of whats to come and how little of the original partwork I will be using. To be honest I am changing so much that the instructions become almost redundant.
I include a few pics of progress to date.I am concentrating on one side at a time to relieve the tedium of constantly treenailing. You will notice the alterations to the upper gunports. These have been altered to accomodate the decorations. The kits supplied directions  are incorrect.I have acquired some black pre dyed boxwood strips to plank the upper hull where the ornamentation sits. This will cover all the alterations I have to make in this area, to create a more accurate representation of the original.
    Kind Regards Nigel
