Ah, thats very informative, thanks! Im starting to get an urge to do the big lion on my Vasa. Michail/Schriper did it on his BB and it looks great.

As I seem to have encouraged a few members to have a go at carving,I am posting a few updates to try and illustrate the processes involved.I appreciate these may differ from what procedures some other members may follow,but this way works for me,as I mentioned earlier I have a couple of conditions that effect the dexterity and sensitivity in my hands.
Picture one shows the initial shape roughed out in plan using a combination of a scalpel and a 1mm round burr in the dremel.
In picture two I have started to remove material to start to get the correct levels.The carving blank is overthick so I can slowly workdown to the correct thicknesses.The fine detail is left overwidth until I get close to the finished shape.This is then thinned out towards the end of the process.This helps to prevent unwanted breakout.

Thanks for showing the way with the carving. I am very tempted to have a go at carving something for myself? I will wait and see what the quality of the cast parts look like first and then if I feel I may improve on the casting then maybe???
I am jumping before I can run somewhat!!! I will attempt to improve on the casting, if not the casting can always be used, cant lose really!?!

I have fitted the carving.I have used aluminium tube 8mm long to replicate the lead lining that was used in the hawse holes.The bores have been countersunk to remove the corner.On to the other side now

Thank you very much indeed Matti I think the problem with a video is that it would be very long.I have five hours work so far in that little carving.I anticipate it could take up to another ten to complete it.This build is the first time I have done any proper carving,so I am learning as I go along.The one thing I have learned is to only use burrs to remove material bulk.I get better results doing the final shaping with the tip of a scalpel blade and dental probes.When I do the carving for the opposite side,I will post some pics at stages to try and illustrate how I go about it.My method my not be the same as everyone else but I have a couple of conditions that affect my dexterity and sensitivity in my hands so all my techniques have had to be adapted to suit.

Just a pic of the completed carving.I have given it one coat of varnish for protection.It looks much darker than in real life due to lighting.

I wanted to concentrate on the remaining work to enable me to fit the prow deck.I first started on the trim that runs from under the figurehead back to the wales at the bow.I started by cutting a wishbone shape out of pear that fitted around the stem.This was then notched to take the gussets at each side.I couldn't make this from one piece as the gussets slope with the wales.The wishbone piece was shaped as the sides taper in both planes.This was fitted and the gussets were shaped and fitted.The next job is the anchor hawse holes and carved surrounds.After looking at the artwork and refering to sephton's book I thought that this supposed angel with outstretched wings has a slight demonic appearance.I first cut a pear strip and shaped it to fit the curve of the bow.I have started the carving work and you will notice I have given the angel a skull for a face.I hope to be able to depict the rib structure on the body.The rest of the carving is mainly in the rough at the moment.

To cut the square holes out in the capping strip,after marking it out,I cut the 2.7mm square holes out using a tiny rotary burr in the dremel.They were then squared up and taken to full size using a combination of a small jewellers square file and the point of a scalpel.It probably took a couple of hours to produce that one piece.It was then slid over the verticals into position and I found a couple of the uprights were pushed out of vertical slightly,so I marked which holes wanted enlarging slightly.The strip was removed and minute adjustments made then bonded in position.

Just a small update.I have fitted the thro railing uprights for the last two decks(to be trimmed to height later in the build).I decided to treenail the prow deck.Call me mad as it is 1mm gratings but it just looked too plain compared to the hull.After I had cleaned the filler out of the holes using a 1mm sq piece of boxwood,I discovered some of the filler pigment had coloured some areas in the holes.I quite like this and adds a bit of artificial ageing,good job as I don't fancy remaking the deck.I then made a moulding out of pear sheet for where the deck abuts the bulkhead,using a combination of shaped x-acto blade and my pillar drill set up with a dremel milling cutter.Finally I sprayed the assembly with one coat of Ronseal Mattcoat.

Hey all! Started to work on those towers. Still some shaping to do, but its starting to get there. Im nervous about drilling the center hole for the sculptures that sit on top of them. I hope they will work out. Id hate if it would crack them.
