Followup.....ordered 3mm deadeyes from Chuck. I got his package promptly, but didn't get a chance to work on my ship til yesterday. Opened the package from Chuck, and it looked like he had sent the wrong deadeyes. They looked small. Maybe I ordered wrong. Went to the deadeyes supplied with the kit and they were clearly larger than what Chuck sent. I measured each. Chuck's were 3mm. The ones in the kit were closer to 5mm. The parts listed in the kit only showed 3mm. How frustrating.!

Besides Syren, does anyone produce a well centered pattern deadeye? I realize it may not show much...just bugs me when I'm working on that area. It's like the ONLY thing I see.

Building a ship which requires 3mm deadeyes for chainplates. Before going too far, decided to clear all the holes with a fine drill so as not to have to deal with them being too small when starting the rigging. As I was doing this I noted many of the threesome hole patterns were not centered very well. Surprised me, as this model company is known for its fine wood and parts. I was thinking of buying replacements, but is this a common problem with very small deadeyes? If so, I'll work with them and move on. If not, any recommendations?

Black Prince?.......No way. I bought it to build for my young son. Didn't expect much....and this turned out to be what I got. Really doesn't help you develop any skills. I started with Caldercraft's Sherbourne. Single masted and uncomplicated rigging.

I received this as a gift and am pretty certain I will not start it. $300 + shipping. USA buyers only. My zip is 43528. Easiest way to pay is PayPal. The reason I'm selling is that, while a great kit, I'm moving on to shorter builds ( building Vanguard's Erycina presently). Turning 77 soon and this ship would probably take me (based on past builds) 18 months or so. My next kit will likely be one of Vanguard's cutters. If you are familiar with Vanguard kits, I don't need to tell you about the quality of materials, instruction guide, and plans. I've opened the kit, but that's it.

I'm late to this conversation, but my first build was Caldercraft's Sherbourne. I was quite please with the build, even though the instructions are nowhere near Vangaurd's. As I posted on another thread, I find Vanguard's parts to be too small for my old eyes. -

I think Vanguard models are of very nice quality and instructions. However, unless you get their larger (and more expensive) kits you are dealing with very small parts. I'm just not crazy about these, especially the etched brass fittings. -
Written plans call for 2 parts #47 near the companionway. However, in none of the pics, or plans does it show these pieces actually installed. Any help?

More coloring brass questions

I'm building the Erycina. The directions say to prime, then paint the brass fittings. Does anyone do this? If so, what do you prime with? Thanks -
Very nice work! While I am in the middle of a smaller kit right now, you have inspired me to go back to my uncompleted Cheerful. I stopped when I just could not get a decent drop plank cut. It always ticks me off when I look at her. I'm not usually a quitter, but this somehow frustrated me greatly. Glad I didn't sell my Jim saw and thickness sander yet.

If I sell them, I really don't want to ship. if possible. Have a few past bad experiences with heavy mechanical/electronics stuff. 'd be willing to drive a radius of 100 mikes from Toledo, Ohio to meet a buyer.

Wow..I am unlikely to try another scratch build and was thinking of selling my Jim saw and thickness sander. No idea what to ask. I mean his equipment is definitely top notch, but $1500 just for the saw?
