best SECOND model ship kit recommendations

I think Vanguard models are of very nice quality and instructions. However, unless you get their larger (and more expensive) kits you are dealing with very small parts. I'm just not crazy about these, especially the etched brass fittings. -
Written plans call for 2 parts #47 near the companionway. However, in none of the pics, or plans does it show these pieces actually installed. Any help?

More coloring brass questions

I'm building the Erycina. The directions say to prime, then paint the brass fittings. Does anyone do this? If so, what do you prime with? Thanks -
Very nice work! While I am in the middle of a smaller kit right now, you have inspired me to go back to my uncompleted Cheerful. I stopped when I just could not get a decent drop plank cut. It always ticks me off when I look at her. I'm not usually a quitter, but this somehow frustrated me greatly. Glad I didn't sell my Jim saw and thickness sander yet.

Not looking for freighters, but any other type of work vessel, fishing vessel, or fighting ship. Aside from the Niagra, does anyone know of any others?

If I sell them, I really don't want to ship. if possible. Have a few past bad experiences with heavy mechanical/electronics stuff. 'd be willing to drive a radius of 100 mikes from Toledo, Ohio to meet a buyer.

Wow..I am unlikely to try another scratch build and was thinking of selling my Jim saw and thickness sander. No idea what to ask. I mean his equipment is definitely top notch, but $1500 just for the saw?

Rob...Still don't understand why you didn't edge bend that bottom plank at the stern to meet the plank above. Most people probably understood your explanation, but I'm an old fart. Great job BTW. Myself....just finishing the first planking.

I received this as a gift, but with not too many starts left in me, I decided to do something a bit simpler. My first ship was a cutter by Jotika, which I enjoyed building. I really like the look of Vanguard's Cutter Alert and thought maybe that's what I should try next. In any case, I m going try selling the Grecian kit. It's been opened but that's it. I use mine for masts and spars as well. Does a fine job. Used to use a power drill mounted upside down in a vice. It sufficed at the time, but the Proton is better just for the ability of accommodating larger lengths. A good deal for the money IMO. I do agree the collets are pretty cheap. -
After seeing your planking job, I'm looking for a blowtorch for mine in progress. Magnificent!!

I have many of those black or red rubber tipped clamps, but the tips come off, or wear thru, and the metal dents the wood. I'd spend more money if the darn things would last. Anything to recommend?

I took a near 2 year hiatus from serious building. I had started a collectable postage stamp store online and was pretty consumed with that. I had 5 very nice (IMO) builds behind me ( Convulsion, Sherbourne, Bluenose, Dos Amigos, and Flirt). None perfect re: planking but certainly more than passable (IMO). I've now quit two builds (Brig Supply and Cheerful) as my planking "skills" have disappeared. Maybe it's age (76), but it has discouraged me from continuing this hobby. Before just moving on, I thought maybe I should regroup and try a simpler build. Something with nice wood and better than average instructions. Vanguard seems to meet both those requirements. Any suggestion....Vanguard or otherwise? It does not need o be a warship (ie old fishing vessels maybe). Thanks in advance.
