That looks like it came from a Star Wars movie set.

Vanguard's cutter kits....how do they differ?

Thus....I just went through your build log of the Alert. Magnificent!!! You are way above my league. BTW, my first build was Jotika's version of the Sherbourne. For a first build I was quite pleased with it. -
Realizing after all these years that it seems majority of kits that I like are 1:64, I decided to just move on with the Erycina. Eye crap is just a fact of aging. I guess it will just take longer. At least my hands don't shake....that would likely do it. Also, why I purchased a black work table is beyond me....I have spent several minutes on occasion just looking for the cap of my CA glue bottle.

Vanguard has a few different cutters. What are primary differences? Obviously, not referring to the names.
-
While trying to decide which direction to go I decided to fumble along with Erycina. Yesterday, I dropped 5 small blocks. All but one "disappeared" , and likely eaten by my carpet. This old age eye crap is a real bummer. My other two indoor hobbies are tying trout flies for a Michigan fly shop, and selling collectible postage stamps (mostly Canadian) in an online store. Good eyesight for both of these makes a world of difference.

I've looked at both Spray and Gunboat William. I'm very familiar with Jotika's kits as I've previously built 4 of their ships. However, I kinda like the Spray. My big concern with relates to comments from a fellow shipbuilder who thought the britanis castings were too many, and a pain to work with. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks Thunder and UBJS.....I will look into both.
-
Thunder... I looked at that, but could not find any finished build logs.

I have been more than pleased with my progress on this ship right up until masting, gaffs and spars. My problem is failing eyesight and small parts. The kit quality is great. Plans quite good. Manual could use more up close pics on both sides, and less "follow the plans" guidance. Posting this is primarily for older folks thinking of this build. I hate quitting after such great progress on hull and deck, but my progress level after is snail paced and frustrating. Too bad....very nice ship. Need to carefully pick a new build. Would one of Vanguards cutters be a possibility, or will I be faced with the same issue?

I'll bet I have more dust than you.

Paul Ron....why confused? Was I not clear?

Followup.....ordered 3mm deadeyes from Chuck. I got his package promptly, but didn't get a chance to work on my ship til yesterday. Opened the package from Chuck, and it looked like he had sent the wrong deadeyes. They looked small. Maybe I ordered wrong. Went to the deadeyes supplied with the kit and they were clearly larger than what Chuck sent. I measured each. Chuck's were 3mm. The ones in the kit were closer to 5mm. The parts listed in the kit only showed 3mm. How frustrating.!

Ordered from Chuck last night.

I'll be at the door.

Besides Syren, does anyone produce a well centered pattern deadeye? I realize it may not show much...just bugs me when I'm working on that area. It's like the ONLY thing I see.
-
Chuck....when does your store reopen?
-
Building a ship which requires 3mm deadeyes for chainplates. Before going too far, decided to clear all the holes with a fine drill so as not to have to deal with them being too small when starting the rigging. As I was doing this I noted many of the threesome hole patterns were not centered very well. Surprised me, as this model company is known for its fine wood and parts. I was thinking of buying replacements, but is this a common problem with very small deadeyes? If so, I'll work with them and move on. If not, any recommendations?
-
Black Prince?.......No way. I bought it to build for my young son. Didn't expect much....and this turned out to be what I got. Really doesn't help you develop any skills. I started with Caldercraft's Sherbourne. Single masted and uncomplicated rigging.

I received this as a gift and am pretty certain I will not start it. $300 + shipping. USA buyers only. My zip is 43528. Easiest way to pay is PayPal. The reason I'm selling is that, while a great kit, I'm moving on to shorter builds ( building Vanguard's Erycina presently). Turning 77 soon and this ship would probably take me (based on past builds) 18 months or so. My next kit will likely be one of Vanguard's cutters. If you are familiar with Vanguard kits, I don't need to tell you about the quality of materials, instruction guide, and plans. I've opened the kit, but that's it.
