  1. Thank you dgbot! I have a little question though... What do you mean below the water line the copper will be the color of a penny? Because it is not in contact with oxigen it won't oxidize? And that the copper above the water line will oxidize because it is in contact with oxigen? I thought that the whole copper hull would look somewhat oxidized? I made some big progress today finishing up all the guns and I have my first broadside: 15 32pounders ready to fire I can't tell you how long I've waited to see this! It looks awesome! Enjoy!
  2. well some more progress, steadily but surely, another year or so and I will get somewhere for the moment I'm working on the lower gun deck, the cannons, all 30 of the. My plan is to do some basic rigging and install them with breeching tackle To make the barrels more realistic I painted them flat black and gave them a metallic finish with some pencil. All done by hand :-o 20 done, 10 more to go! I'm also experimenting with weathering the copper hull, giving it an oxidized look if you please will upload some pictures when I get it right! Some pictures:
  3. Some progress Some detailing of the forecastle, not finished, still needs touching up, a lot The cheeks are also installed and I like it! I had to cut out the hole for the gammoning as this was not aligned but it all worked out pretty good! I like it At last some visual progress
  4. So I have finished the glazing on the quartergalleries! The one on the left is not finished yet, it still needs some detailing and some touch ups but due to the lack of gold paint, it will have to wait some longer It looks horrible in such close view, but it looks better in real life, thank god! I also added a small detail to the ships bell, a little rope to ring it , maybe in the future I will ad something more
  5. Thank you Bill! Well I put some balast in her hold (if that is the correct term?) I made two sections before & aft, put some gravel in plastic bags, tested the load and distribution until it was right and fixed them inside using plastic beams I took from some left over plastic frames from previous builds. She sits nicely doesn't she? Patrick & Stockholm tar: I'm afraid there is indeed a little mix up here, for which I apologize. As you probably know it is a third rate ship of the line but I meant it was the first in perhaps many series of ships of the line I have ever built. Indeed the first "ship of the line" I personally constructed. I will adjust the title to prevent any further confusion! I am currently working on the stern details and windows and such, some small painting as I don't have time to make big progress. When the moment comes, in a week or 3 I will finish up the lower gun deck, place al the cannons, do some rigging on them and put in the upper gun deck. Pictures will follow! Thank you for watching!
  6. Hi Doris! Encredible build you have here! I am wondering how did you make the flag look so realistic? Did you print it on a piece of paper or tissue or...? Keep up te good work
  7. Thank you for the link Jean-Pierre! I have found this forum quite a while back, it's very educational! The heller kits indeed have some rough edges, I have to admit, but with some creativity I think they can be turned into a very nice models. Lucky for me I could buy a model of a 74-gun ship (for a very nice price), or I would be hoplessly lost! Grtz!
  8. Hello everyone! I have been stalking this site for a while now (when one looks at every post every day you can begin to call it stalking I guess) and I actually fell in love with sailingships, especially naval vessels from mid 18th to late 18th century. I'm currently building (as the title of this topic already says it:) Le superbe from heller. The instructions are pretty unclear and in french so for my first ship of this kind, that's quite a setback. But nothing is forlorn! My deepest grattitude is extended to Blue Ensign for letting me base my model on his Le Praetorian. When I'm stuck with my model I spy a little bit off his buildlog since there are no buildlogs of this ship that has that level of detail and extensiveness. So more about the build itself. I started the build in march 2013, almost a year further and not that much progression, because of a very big learning curve to overcome. I take my time to do and redo things when necessary. And a building break of 5 months also has something to do with it. Too much schoolwork and so on. I have added some detail to the longboat because I don't like the look of an empty boat, and the setting of the shipsboats doesn't satisfy me. Other boats will be built later on to be incorporated in a diorama. I will try to add as much detail to the cannons as possible, which in this scale is pretty hard. I painted the cannons flat black but I also overdrawn them with pencil to add a metallic look. At the moment only the 30 32pndrs are painted and eyeletes have been attached to the trucks. As you will notice in my pictures, the ship is seaworthy, at least it can float like a real ship. I also built my previous models, Bismarck and Prinz Eugen this way, because it adds some realism. Nothing worse like a ship on dry land in my opinion... But with models it's harder said than done of course. The foremast is a bit warped but this is already fixed. I am planning to pick up the build again starting from june, because school will be over and I have a whole summerholiday to get some work done. I know that I will never reach the quality and finesse all the models on this forum have but I am passionate about it and my goal is to make a ship that I like/love and will be proud of. My deepest respect for all you experienced shipbuilders on this forum, wood and plastic. Every time I look at a build I am symply awe-struck! Enjoy and any comment/help is welcome! greetings.
  9. Thank you for your constructive comment B.E.! I have registered on that site and I was looking at all those beautiful builds with my mouth just hanging open. I wil never reach such a skill level but it sure is a great inspiration to try to take things to the next level! Grtz
  10. Hello B.E., exams are finished, my long awaited holiday can start now and I can finaly continue my project of Le Superbe. But with picking up where I left it, some questions come to mind. Regarding the blocks and deadeyes, what size should they be? About 3 mm? And the rope, maybe a thickness of 0.5mm to 1mm? Sorry to bother you again with all my questions but as this is my first build of this sort, my experience is next to nothing. I have read on other build logs that some people send the entire buildlog by E-Mail. Is this something you would be willing to do? Because the building instructions by Heller are a complete mistery sometimes, there is no indication of putting what together first and I fear that I will block myself or ruin something at one point... It would be easier instead of bothering you all the time with my questions... Of you are not willing to do this, I fully understand! Thank you for taking the time to read this! Love your Pegasus by the way! Grts
  11. Indeed it is a bit unorthodox but a very nice effect nevertheless! I wouldn't come up with something like that. I use acrylic paints from revell, I have good experiences with those (easy to mix with water, no unpleasant odours,...). I used matt ochre(88). Which also gives a nice effect. Not too bright but not too light. And the wales are flat black( I like the contrast). The wash is also acrylic(brand: game color wash) so I guessed there would be no problems by using it on the paint? I think I will clean off the paint and start over. In the process of painting it I have already learned quite a few things and when starting over, it will even look better (I hope). And try with a clear coat over the base colours. Grts, Lukas
  12. Hello blue ensign! Thank you for the constructive replies! I painted one side of the hull, applied a wood colour oil wash to accentuate the planking on the hull. But when it dries up it seems to eat through some areas of the paint... It's very strange. Is it better to apply a clear coat before using the oil wash? regards, Lukas
  13. Hello Blue Ensign. Absolutely no problem, don't worry about it. Thank you for this reference of the Victory, it will be very helpfull! I've had my eye on a book of jean boudriot, namely the third volume about rigging and such. It was for sale at a low price on ebay but just as the auction was about to end the bidding went crazy and it sold for an amount way out of my budget. It would have been an excellent guide! I'll have to do with my own creativity. I'm about done with inscribing the plank lines. Just the ones remaining on the wales and painting can begin. When reading your previous comments is it correct that you glued the hull halves together first and then installed the gun deck? Greetings, Lukas
  14. Hello Blue ensign. I'm sorry to trouble you again but I have a question regarding the colors used. I've consulted the building manual of the HMS victory by revell and it says that the black for the wales, the yellow for the rest of the planking on the upperhull and the red fo the innerworkings of the ship should be silky-matt. Is this historically correct or would matt colours be more fitting? Regards, Lukas
  15. I took another look and, hower the lines are still a bit off, this can be fixed very easily by applying some pressure. So no problem there. The fit of the decks is very good but indeed, like you said, it's going to be a hell of a job to fit them in there without cracking the hull apart or dislodging any cannons. But your information is very helpfull and wil get me a long way! Thank you! Kind regards, Lukas
  16. Thank you for the advice! My ship just came in today. I did a little dryfit of the hull and it seems that the fit a bit off in the middle. Did you have the same sort of issue with your model? regards, Lukas
  17. Wow, thank you for these VERY instructive posts! Very clear and understandable! I do have a little question about painting the model. Did you paint it by hand or airbrush or both? I can imagine that the hull and deck are easier to airbrush? Greetings Lukas
  18. Perhaps I was a bite too vague or even incorrect indeed, my apologies. What I meant was the horizontal planking on the upperhull, above the waterline. I have looked at some reviews of the kit and they weren't present. I read a number of times that the ship seems to be carved out of one single log. I hope this gives some clarification? Or has Heller solved this problem in the mean time? The work of Jean Boudriot would indeed be a great addition to this build! I think I will have many once I start the build... The learning curve on this model will be huge. After building only WWII and more recent ships this is the first of its kind. I believe this kit isn't meant for beginners? greeting? Lukas
  19. Very nice work! I have just bought this model myself, and I know I will not be able to do such a great job on it as you have, but I will do my best. Are there any tips that you wish to give me? I do have a little question though; on the model there are no wooden beam structures on the upperhull. How did you manage to replicate these? Kind regards, Lvdb
