Thanks Grant, about 3 on the main deck and a few small ones I think. No nightmares here
Danny, thanks for the compliment and pointing out my error, I made the battle station 3 years ago meanwhile I also learned  I shouldn't portray them run out

Meanwhile knight to C4, bishop to C4, bishop takes knight........ I like Greg's metaphor that scratch building is like playing chess. And I was caught by my opponent. I forgot to cut the mortises in the curved beam and had to do them in situ, little nerve wrecking.....

So a little mile stone today, I finished all the beams, knees, carlings, ledges, opposing knees ands so on for the lower deck that I want to portray. After sanding the deck it came out really nice. On to the planking of the deck, I'll keep that to a minimum though to show as much of the details as possible. A waterway on both sides and just enough planks to support the bulkheads.

Thanks guys for all the likes and complements!

Greg, it's no coincidence, coamings and ledges were fit to the finished grating. I rather see a not so perfectly sized coaming than a mutilated grating to get it fit in a perfect coaming.

    Joe, I think 45 minutes.

Mark, I'll pass the compliments to Greg, the barrels are from admiraltymodels.com the engravings, or Royal Cyphers were a 'wedding gift' from Greg. EU etching produced these but I'm not sure if they are still available. The 'only' thing I added was the vent.

Daniel, thanks for taking the time to count them, and this is just one of many gratings

Thanks for the tip Mike. Now I just have to “accidentally” tear a sheet so I can give it a try.

Had a good stretch of time in the work shop. I have been planking above the wale.
Very straight forward until I got to the sweep ports and gun port openings. Then I
had to notch the plank. It was a slow process of take a little off, check, take a little
more and recheck. After several times it worked out.

Now its time to plank the starboard side and then a bunch of treenailing.

Hi Chris. I’ve played with it a bit. It is as thin as water. The best way I found to do it on
something this large is to use a cut up cotton tee shirt. Using rubber gloves of course I
dipped the tee shirt in the dye squeezed the excess out and then rubbed it in. At the ends
I did tape it off and used a small brush to better control it. I’m very happy with the way
it came out. After it dried I also installed three rows of planking below the wales. That
is the extent of hull planking I will do.

Happy hollidays and best wishes for all the folowers. Rest a little, be with your dears, spend some good time, and back to life

In Belgrade, everywhere you can feel New Year and Christmas slowdown in business, dappled with sport success (women handbal  second in world) and political turbulences (will be elections or not)

In shipyard, finished with moldings, and then - slow-motion

Starting with freeing posts, step by step. There are 12 of them. Why are tricky parts always multiplied ?

It took me near and hour just to recalculate them and rescale from Campbell to my model, and another two hours to draw on model, start drilling and to finish first four squared holes

Holly, and almighty paper tape. I did not use jig I made ( it swings to much and not precise I hoped ). For measuring, as divider from moldings I use 2mm strip.

Then little holes, in second cross not so little holes, and then carefully sawing with fine locksmith file. Finish with sanding jig granulated 250

When I finish all 12 of them, then start real party. I have some ideas ...

In some details of pictures, you can see wrong thickness of bulwark wall I was writing about. That has a good and a bad point

Good - so much stronger than 1 mm it should be, and it will be much easier to mount stanchions

Bad - it is not in scale. Also, it force me to try to mask it making cap panels of freeing posts in non standard way

There is also one more relatively large mistake, but with no possibility to correct in any way. Earlier lost lines of deck catch me again, this time inside of bulwarks: some of freeing posts are not on equal to the distance and parallel to main deck. Adequate correction of main deck is impossible, because it will reflect to rise of aft deck ( and there is no price to do it again. Third time I think).

Maybe it could be masked visually by nail and dead-eye holder and by stanchions, and by some extra rope, and by white masks, we will see. As usualy, I also have some idea for that. Pictures of this bump will follow later

Moldings for benders are mounted all around, and YES !  YES ! YES ! They are parralel whole along Her Majesty. Little corrections are still to be done ( little thinning of moldings, tiny  alignement of lines, tiny putty and sanding, rounding edges of moldings...) but, it seems to be exact what have to be

i had to make two new jig for sanding from part of molding 4mm wide. Rough sandpaper on one side and dine sandpaper on another side.

And, Bob, we are again in stage of Hmm job: sand a little, and then look at it, and Hmm, put some putty, look ,and Hmm again, and then again light sanding and Hmm again, and everything in circle around and around ...

I wish I had this patient earlier

Thanks Floyd. It's really fun to do.

Nothing really exciting to show all of you. I have cut the wales from cherry and installed them.
Once they are sanded I will be coloring them black with Fiebings leather dye. This will be the
first time I have used it so this might be interesting!

I have depleted most of my ebony and will probably discontinue using it anymore. It’s bad for
you, I’m not religious enough about wearing a mask and it’s just messy.

As far as the rest of the planking goes I will be using Boxwood. The plans show planking
only above the wales but I may put two or three rows below the wales too.

Here it is warts and all but it is mine.
I have decided to wait until I get a decent drawplate before doing any further trenailing. I do not like the results using filler.......very uneven
Sofar my search for it has not been very successfull.

I have learned so much during this build and it has given me a lot of confidence for future builds. Pure enjoyment

I will however carry on filling the hold with barrels and rope etc. and will post the results.

Thanks to everybody who contributed with advice and encouragement
Special thanks to the  team who made this project available to us. Very nice and clear drawings and It was free!!

That is very much appreciated by people living in countries like mine where the difference in exchange rates make dollar purchases of quality plans impossibly expensive and puts the hobby out of reach for a lot of us.

    EDIT ON MARCH 26 2014

    Missing pictures from Keelhauled`s post

Thx Marc, there is a lot to think about this lines

Yesterday in the morning flea market I found some toys I could not avoid to bye for 5€ both ...

I was in shipyard, but only for cleaning it and to get things and tools in some order. I hate idea to put laptop in the dust, so pictures are everywhere

And my collection of sanding jigs picked up from all parts and corners of workshop ... which I usually can not find when I need them

And collection of fine rasps "saved" 30 years ago from Army ...    also found everywhere in work place

Black thing near is my music friend - mini speaker with subwoofer !!!  ( unbelievable what quality of sound it has attached to cellphone)

Yesterday and today many home-works and family obligations, and no progress, except cleaning shipyard ...  Ah, yes, in the evening I was with friend of mine in visiting plane and thank model competition in Belgrade (New Year Cup) in national Museum of aviation. I am not a fan of models of planes thanks and trains, but it was interesting, specially  when my friends head had close contact with flaps on a tail of jet plane parked in the middle of exhibition ...

sonicmcdude reacted to Modeler12 in Storing and using those tiny drills
We all have used and lost or broken several of those number 80  through 60 drills. Some look like a piece of wire and end up on the floor.

I decided to invest in a set of pin-vises that could be 'dedicated' to hold one drill bit each. I marked them with the size.
In addition, I went a step further and made this drill holder . . . .
    No further explanation necessary . . .???

Well, yes, the drills in the second picture have a thicker shaft which comes in handy when using them in my drill press. The set of 'unmarked' drills in the first picture have various sizes for those times when the hole diameter does not matter too much and I just need a 'drill'.
But there are also a number of collets that I can use in the pin vises or my drill press.
Notice also that I have to replace a couple of the real tiny guys.

I decided to start placing the veneer strips from the keel to practice my second planking skills. The hull below the waterline will be painted anyway so any mistake will be covered. Before placing the strips, I beveled the edges so that, at least in theory, each separate plank will show through the paint.

While waiting for the table saw to arrive, I decided to make a pump and test a patina for copper and brass that I bought. I made the pump from a beech wood dowel and have to stain it yet. The patina that I used for the metal parts is some kind of acid of a transparent light blue color which had to be diluted with water. Brass turned immediately black, while copper took a few minutes. On brass, the black oxide doesn't come off easily, unlike copper.

    Part 30 – Aft Square Frames 2

At this stage the first 15 full frames aft of 0 have been set.  The first picture shows frames 16, 17 and 18, right after inserting their bolts.  These are ready to be installed.

The next picture shows the hole being drilled for a pin on the port side of frame 16.  A bent pin in this hole will secure the top on this side of the frame to the ribband strip.

I mentioned earlier that a wood block is used to space the frame and the caliper to set the height of the ribband to the bottom of the planksheer rail.  That rail will be added much later.

The next picture was taken after frames 16 and 17 were erected.

At this stage the ends of the temporary ribbands were reached.  The next picture shows work to extend the ribbands.  Setting frames using the ribbands has been a major time saver and helped get the frames into faired lines.

Connecting strips are being glued to the bottom of the existing ribbands.  The next picture shows the ribband extensions being glued on.  The “gantry” is being used to hold clamped guides the set the height and breadth of the ribbands at that position along the hull.

The gantry can be moved and the guides set at any given position.  The next picture shows another view of the hull with the extended ribbands.

In the last picture frame 18 has been installed and pinned to the ribband extensions.

The length of the hull – and the eventual size of the model are starting to become apparent.  It is really long and slender.  By way of comparison, Naiad was 147 feet long with a breadth of roughly 39 feet – an L/D ratio of roughly 3.7 to 1.  Young America had a length of 240 feet and a breadth of 43 feet – an L/D ratio of 5.6 to 1.

There are now 11 more full frames to install.  19, 20 and 21 are in fabrication.  22, 23 and 24 have been lofted.  After installing the last full frame - number 29 -  the keelson and aft deadwood assemblies will be completed to prepare for the half and cant frames.

    Arrgh!

Sometimes while you are posting,,, and you have attached all the pics and write everything… suddenly inet says “no” and all the work and effort go to the trash bin.Anyway, we are just dealing with ceros and ones not with wood.

Thanks very much Pete! Nice place you live. I have just checked it out on google maps and looks beautiful. Lots of forest to make model ship building or Bourbon barrels…

Christian!! Where are you?! How is the HMS Pegasus going?

Sometimes one feels so alone here in the “Complete Model” forum…

Here´s the work done so far during these two last days.

As you can see the top beams (4x4mm) at the ends of the frames were pretty helpful to glue the limber strake.

Here´s a shot of the two strakes glued. Took me two days. Meanwhile I was cutting more patterns, studying the plans and sanding the hawse pieces.

And here is where I am moving on… the fore and aft platforms. I have to buy a small level to ensure the platforms are leveled. It is a device quite expensive. Made in Japan.

Hope to post more tomorow. Fingers Cross.

    Hello All!

As I said, I was going to make a "practicum" about the Hawse frames but I dropped the idea. I´m not an expertto do so.

Instead I´m going to put a bunch of pics that I hope will speak by themselves... There we gooOOO!

    Just checking.

One pair sanded and the other one not.

The angle in my model against the -W- frame was 26º so I sand a piece of pine to put it against my tilt sand table.

All rough sanded. I will add the 5th one later on.

Starting the sanding. Pretty pretty slow and always checking. When i say slow is slow and slow...

Checking the outside fit. the interior is not still faired.

The inner side was much more easy than I expect with the minidrill.

Checking again. Did I say it? wood is patient like some body says...

and that´s it till now, still the portside to be done...

    Best wishes and happy thanksgiving!!

    Hello All!

At last Saint Fryday! a whole weekend to spend modelling...

A small update. The keelson. When I remove the Triton from the jig, even all that pine chocks between the frames, was quite weak. Indeed I broke some of them trying to simulate the movement I should do with a sand block.

I put the keelson to strength the hull. From now on I have a good central "line" of wood and I can start adding the thick stuff in the inside. The inside is allready faired. I also cut yesterday the mighty hawse pieces. I´ll give them a try today. Finger cross.

    Here are some pics...

I had to bevel a little bit the stern keelson to be able to fit it between the aft frames. The gap there was pretty narow.

    Best wishes!

    daniel.
